Billy Jack (1971)
Plot
Billy Jack is a half-Indian/half-white ex-Green Beret who is being drawn more and more toward his Indian side. He hates violence, but can't get away from it in the white man's world. Pitting the good guys, the students of the peace-loving free-arts school in the desert vs. the conservative bad guys in the near-by town, the movie plays definitive late-60s themes/messages: anti-establishment, make love not war, the senseless slaughter of God's creatures, the rape of society (figuratively and literally), two-sided justice, racial segregation and prejudices.

Quotes:
Cindy: I pray Billy kills him!::Jean: You mustn't tell Billy, Cindy.::Cindy: Why not?::Jean: Because he will kill him.::Cindy: DAMN YOUR PACIFISM!
[Billy Jack is surrounded by Posner's thugs]::Mr. Posner: You really think those Green Beret Karate tricks are gonna help you against all these boys?::Billy Jack: Well, it doesn't look to me like I really have any choice now, does it?::Mr. Posner: [laughing] That's right, you don't.::Billy Jack: You know what I think I'm gonna do then? Just for the hell of it?::Mr. Posner: Tell me.::Billy Jack: I'm gonna take this right foot, and I'm gonna whop you on that side of your face...::[points to Posner's right cheek]::Billy Jack: ...and you wanna know something? There's not a damn thing you're gonna be able to do about it.::Mr. Posner: Really?::Billy Jack: Really.::[kicks Posner's right cheek, sending him to the ground]
Billy Jack: Bernard, I want you to know... that I try. When Jean and the kids at the school tell me that I'm supposed to control my violent temper, and be passive and nonviolent like they are, I try. I really try. Though when I see this girl... of such a beautiful spirit... so degraded... and this boy... that I love... sprawled out by this big ape here... and this little girl, who is so special to us we call her "God's little gift of sunshine"... and I think of the number of years that she's going to have to carry in her memory... the savagery of this idiotic moment of yours... I just go BERSERK!
Billy Jack: Now, which is it gonna be: drive your car in the lake or get a dislocated elbow?
Billy Jack: You're illegally on Indian land.::Mr. Posner: I'm sorry about that. I guess we just got caught up in the chase and crossed over without knowing it.::Billy Jack: You're a liar.::Mr. Posner: We got the law here, Billy Jack.::Billy Jack: When policemen break the law, then there isn't any law - just a fight for survival.
Mr. Posner: You're makin' a mistake.::Billy Jack: I've made 'em before.
Billy Jack: [giggling] I can't believe it. I really can't believe this guy. Can you believe it?::Jean: Not really, no.::Billy Jack: You know what he reminds me of?::Jean: What?::Billy Jack: A little monkey. Posner's little monkey, runnin' around tryin' to get in all the bananas. Get your blouse and get outa' here.::Girl: Will you look?::Billy Jack: [scoffs] Probably. Get your blouse.
Councilman: When was the last time you cut your hair?::Drama Teacher: When was the time you brushed your teeth, sir?
Mr. Posner: Why did you read it?::Councilman: Were you taught this in school?::Drama Teacher: [shouts from audience] Because her brain has been damaged by the heathen devil weed, marijuana!
[the deputy is holding one of the school's girls at gunpoint as Billy Jack approaches]::Deputy: Now you drop that gun or I'll shoot her!::Deputy: [long pause] I'm not gonna ask you again.::Billy Jack: You won't have to.::Deputy: What?::Billy Jack: I said shoot her.::Deputy: [cocks revolver] You'd kill her? just like that?::Billy Jack: [shakes his head] You'll kill her.::[points his rifle]::Billy Jack: And then I'll kill you. Just like that.

Adding all the sound effects, one at a time, and trying to line them up with the action, was for me the most challenging and time-consuming aspect of making this video. The final sound effect I added was the ambient park sound audio over top of all of the clips, including background traffic and

Billy Jack, the movie released in
1971, centers around the character of the same name. Billy Jack, played by
Tom Laughlin, is a
Native American ex-Green Beret
Vietnam War veteran who plays the hero. He takes it upon himself to make his mission to defend the hippie-themed
Freedom School and its students from the machinations of racist who make life difficult for individuals living on a reservations. The film hit on a potent formula with this message in 1971, and went on to become one of the highest grossing of its time. The discrimination is exemplified when some of the children go into town for ice cream and are subject to bullying in this scene.

ABOUT THIS
CLIP:
Corvette Lake
How afraid of
Billy Jack was
Bernard Posner? So afraid that he drove his car into the lake because
Billy told him to.
As a 14-year-old who occasionally got to drive this 427 three-pack dream car, this was an epically tragic day. It completely destroyed the car, which was loaned to the production.
I never did know what happened when they returned the car.

This version of the fight is about a minute longer than the original.
The previously-unseen footage in this video is just a small part of what is available in the "cut-your-own fight" section on the bonus disc of the
35th Anniversary Billy Jack
DVD.
That footage has no audio whatsoever, so I am very grateful to the community at
http://www.soundsnap.com for all of the sound effects I used in this video.
Adding all the sound effects, one at a time, and trying to line them up with the action, was for me the most challenging and time-consuming aspect of making this video. The final sound effect I added was the ambient park sound audio over top of all of the clips, including background traffic and birds. That audio, also from soundsnap.com, was recorded by
Justine Angus in a park in
Sydney Australia- thereby allowing me to import birds from
Down Under to the parks of the
U.S.
Here's some of the text from the "cut-your-own fight" folder on the 35th Anniversary Billy Jack DVD:
"
The footage in this folder is most of the remaining negatives from the original fight scene shoots in
1969 in
Prescott, AZ and
1970 in
Santa Fe, NM (you can tell the
difference by the jackets, the breath, and the white, frostbitten feet).
You will see parts missing. They are the clips that were used in the original film.
By providing this footage, we are encouraging you to come up with your own version of the fight scene."
Finally, I'm particularly grateful to
Tom Laughlin for creating the character and the film "Billy Jack." I loved this movie when it was widely released in
1973, and saw it at the theatre multiple times.
Thirty-five years later, I still love this film.
You can buy the DVD boxed set of the Billy Jack
Trilogy from
Billy (Tom Laughlin) himself here:

Billy Jack Ice Cream Shop
Lyrics to the popular theme song "
One Tin Soldier."
Go ahead and hate your neighbor; go ahead and cheat a friend
.
Do it in the name of heaven; you can justify it in the end.
There won't be any trumpets blowin' come the judgment day
On the bloody morning after, one tin soldier rides away

Hapkido techniques within the motion picture industry. The story of Bong Soo Han has yet to be written.
Apart from his work in the "
Billy Jack" series of films,
Grand Master Han preferred to never speak ill of another. Never boast about his own accomplishments. Never turn his back on those he held close as friends.
