Festival Theatre, Paignton
The Festival Theatre was a theatre in Paignton, Devon, England.
Opened in 1967, the Festival Theatre was a seafront theatre located on the Paignton Esplanade, capable of staging large summer shows. It was in direct competition with the Princess and Pavilion theatres in Torquay.
The Festival Theatre closed at the end of 1998. The building re-opened in October 1999 as a multiscreen cinema, known as the Apollo.
Since the closure of the Festival Theatre, the Palace Theatre in Palace Avenue, a smaller venue, has taken over as the main theatre in Paignton.

Paignton /ˈpeɪntən/ is a seaside town on the coast of Tor Bay in Devon, England. Together with Torquay and Brixham it forms the unitary authority of Torbay which was created in 1998. The Torbay area is a holiday destination known as the English Riviera. Paignton's population in the United Kingdom Census of 2011 was 49,021. It has origins as a Celtic settlement and was first mentioned in 1086. It grew as a small fishing village and a new harbour was built in 1847. A railway line was opened to passengers in 1859 creating links to Torquay and London. As its population increased, it merged with the villages of Goodrington and Preston.
History
Paignton is mentioned in the Domesday Book of AD 1086. Formerly written Peynton and Paington, the name is derived from Paega's town, the original Anglo-Saxon settlement. Paignton was given the status of a borough having a market and fair in 1294.
Paignton was a small fishing village until the 19th century, when in 1837 the Paington [sic] Harbour Act led to the construction of a new harbour and the modern spelling, Paignton, first appeared. The historic part of Paignton is centred on Church Street, Winner Street and Palace Avenue which contain fine examples of Victorian architecture. Kirkham House is a late medieval stone house which is open to the public at certain times of year. The Coverdale Tower adjacent to Paignton Parish Church is named after Bishop Miles Coverdale, who published an English translation of the Bible in 1536. Coverdale was Bishop of Exeter between 1551 and 1553 and is reputed to have lived in the tower although this is doubted by modern historians.

Join us for a walk in Paignton, Devon, UK. Our walk starts in Paignton town centre. We walk down to Paignton seafront, take a look at Paignton Pier before returning through Paignton town and finishing our walk at Paignton Bus Station.
Paignton is a seaside town on the coast of Tor Bay in Devon, England. Together with Torquay and Brixham it forms the borough of Torbay which was created in 1998. The Torbay area is a holiday destination known as the English Riviera.
Paignton is around 25 miles north east of Plymouth and 20 miles south of Exeter and has the fourth largest population in Devon.
The railway line to Paignton was built by the Dartmouth and Torbay Railway and opened to passengers on 2 August 1859, providing Torquay and Paignton with a link to London.
Paignton's economy relies extensively on tourism and the town is marketed as a location for family holidays. The main seafront area is dominated by Paignton Pier a 240 metre long structure opened in 1879.
Tourist attractions include Paignton Zoo and the Dartmouth Steam Railway, which operates steam trains from Paignton to Kingswear, from where a ferry can be taken across the River Dart to Dartmouth. The line was sold in 1972 and is operated today as a heritage railway line. The 630 mile South West Coast Path National Trail runs along the coast.
Paignton railway station is situated close to the town centre and is a short walk from the seafront along Torbay Road. Train services are provided mainly by Great Western Railway; these consist of approximately half-hourly services to Torquay, Newton Abbot, Exeter and Exmouth along the Riviera Line.
Queen's Park station, for services on the Dartmouth Steam Railway, is adjacent to the main Paignton railway station on the beachside of the level crossing. A service of steam trains is provided from February to December, although it is daily only between April and October.
The other railway station in Paignton is Goodrington Sands (opened in 1928), which is now part of the Dartmouth Steam Railway.
Paignton bus and coach station faces the main entrance to Paignton railway station. Bus services are provided by Stagecoach South West, Torbay Minibuses, Country Bus (Newton Abbot) and the Dartmouth Steam Railway & Riverboat Company. I passed through Paignton only 3 months ago, but spent most of my time in neighbouring Torquay. Another jaded once popular town on the so called ‘English Riviera’. I thought I would return to Paignton, focus on the town and its estates, and ask the locals if indeed this stories of antisocial behaviour are accurate. Or are these reports exaggerating the truth.

Join us for a walk in Paignton, Devon, UK. Our walk starts in Paignton town centre. We walk down to Paignton seafront, take a look at Paignton Pier before returning through Paignton town and finishing our walk at Paignton Bus Station.
Paignton is a seaside town on the coast of Tor Bay in Devon, England. Together with Torquay and Brixham it forms the borough of Torbay which was created in 1998. The Torbay area is a holiday destination known as the English Riviera.
Paignton is around 25 miles north east of Plymouth and 20 miles south of Exeter and has the fourth largest population in Devon.
The railway line to Paignton was built by the Dartmouth and Torbay Railway and opened to passengers on 2 August 1859, providing Torquay and Paignton with a link to London.
Paignton's economy relies extensively on tourism and the town is marketed as a location for family holidays. The main seafront area is dominated by Paignton Pier a 240 metre long structure opened in 1879.
Tourist attractions include Paignton Zoo and the Dartmouth Steam Railway, which operates steam trains from Paignton to Kingswear, from where a ferry can be taken across the River Dart to Dartmouth. The line was sold in 1972 and is operated today as a heritage railway line. The 630 mile South West Coast Path National Trail runs along the coast.
Paignton railway station is situated close to the town centre and is a short walk from the seafront along Torbay Road. Train services are provided mainly by Great Western Railway; these consist of approximately half-hourly services to Torquay, Newton Abbot, Exeter and Exmouth along the Riviera Line.
Queen's Park station, for services on the Dartmouth Steam Railway, is adjacent to the main Paignton railway station on the beachside of the level crossing. A service of steam trains is provided from February to December, although it is daily only between April and October.
The other railway station in Paignton is Goodrington Sands (opened in 1928), which is now part of the Dartmouth Steam Railway.
Paignton bus and coach station faces the main entrance to Paignton railway station. Bus services are provided by Stagecoach South West, Torbay Minibuses, Country Bus (Newton Abbot) and the Dartmouth Steam Railway & Riverboat Company. Principal services lead to Totnes and Plymouth; Torquay and Newton Abbot; Torquay, Teignmouth and Dawlish Warren; Brixham; and Kingswear for the ferry to Dartmouth.
Ferry services are provided seasonally by Paignton Pleasure Cruises and We Ferry to Torquay and Brixham from Paignton Harbour.

One of the brightest jewels in the English Riviera’s crown, as you arrive in the seaside resort of Paignton, you are met with the welcoming sight of its long stretch of beautiful and easily accessible beachfront, promenade, traditional pier, colourful beach huts and green. What's great about Paignton is that it is a compact resort, with the seafront and town centre shops all within close proximity, making it an ideal Devon holiday resort for that relaxing break away. Festival Theatre, Paignton
The Festival Theatre was a theatre in Paignton, Devon, England.
Opened in 1967, the Festival Theatre was a seafront theatre located on the Paignton Esplanade, capable of staging large summer shows. It was in direct competition with the Princess and Pavilion theatres in Torquay.
The Festival Theatre closed at the end of 1998. The building re-opened in October 1999 as a multiscreen cinema, known as the Apollo.
Since the closure of the Festival Theatre, the Palace Theatre in Palace Avenue, a smaller venue, has taken over as the main theatre in Paignton.
