This is a quick summary and analysis for Young Goodman Brown by Hawthorne. This channel discusses and reviews books, novels, and short stories through drawing...poorly.
This is a story about newly wed Goodman Brown, a religious and pious man, setting off on a journey into the forest. He leaves behind his wife, Faith. He meets a man, the devil, in the woods, who talks with him as they continue on a path.
As they walk, they come across people that Goodman Brown knows and respects. They are all, however, on their way to a devil meeting. Goodman Brown is shocked, but remains calm.
Then he finds out his wife is going to the meeting and flips out. He decides to join his wife in the conversion. The two of them are baptized by the devil before all of the devil-worshiping townspeople when...Goodman Brown wakes up. It was all a dream.
However, he begins to look at everyone in town differently, with more cynicism and bitterness. Ultimately, he dies a spiritually dead man. The moral of the story is: people aren't who they seem they are.
On the surface, Hawthorne presents a story about a man and his faith, because the wife's name is also Faith. See what he did there? We know that the marriage between man and woman, or man and his faith, is fairly new, only three months, which makes sense as to why Goodman Brown is so shaken up.
The wilderness also is important to note, as it creates a separation between Civilization and the "Wild." This Wild is associated not only with demonic attributes, but also those of the Indian (Native American) culture, a pretty common attitude at the time.
The ending of the story is questionable, as our hero becomes an anti-hero. But that's okay because not every story ends happily ever after.

Nathaniel Hawthorne (born Nathaniel Hathorne; July 4, 1804 – May 19, 1864) was an American novelist and short story writer. Nathaniel Hawthorne was born in 1804 in the city of Salem, Massachusetts to Nathaniel Hathorne and the former Elizabeth Clarke Manning. His ancestors include John Hathorne, the only judge involved in the Salem witch trials who never repented of his actions. Nathaniel later added a "w" to make his name "Hawthorne" in order to hide this relation. He entered Bowdoin College in 1821, was elected to Phi Beta Kappa in 1824, and graduated in 1825. Hawthorne anonymously published his first work, a novel titled Fanshawe, in 1828. He published several short stories in various periodicals which he collected in 1837 as Twice-Told Tales. The next year, he became engaged to Sophia Peabody. He worked at a Custom House and joined Brook Farm, a transcendentalist community, before marrying Peabody in 1842. The couple moved to The Old Manse in Concord, Massachusetts, later moving to Salem, the Berkshires, then to The Wayside in Concord. The Scarlet Letter was published in 1850, followed by a succession of other novels. A political appointment took Hawthorne and family to Europe before their return to The Wayside in 1860. Hawthorne died on May 19, 1864, and was survived by his wife and their three children.
Much of Hawthorne's writing centers on New England, many works featuring moral allegories with a Puritan inspiration. His fiction works are considered part of the Romantic movement and, more specifically, dark romanticism. His themes often center on the inherent evil and sin of humanity, and his works often have moral messages and deep psychological complexity. His published works include novels, short stories, and a biography of his friend Franklin Pierce.

Hawthorne's classic novel centers on Hester Prynne, a woman in puritan Boston struggling with infidelity and the brutal consequences thereof. It touches on themes of shame, guilt and revenge.
The Scarlet Letter is a literary classic and consistently makes respected 'all time best' lists.

The Scarlet Letter
Nathaniel HAWTHORNE (1804 - 1864)
The story begins in seventeenth-century Salem, Massachusetts, then a Puritan settlement. A young woman, Hester Prynne, is led from the town prison with her infant daughter, Pearl, in her arms and the scarlet letter “A” on her breast. The scarlet letter "A" represents the act of adultery that she has committed; it is to be a symbol of her sin for all to see. She will not reveal her lover’s identity, however, and the scarlet letter, along with her public shaming, is her punishment for her sin and her secrecy. (Summary adapted from Wikipedia)

Massachusetts author Nathaniel Hawthorne never gave a public reading in his lifetime. On the afternoon of November 7, however, the reclusive author returned to Boston to share his literary prowess with an audience at the Meeting House! Best known for novels including The Scarlet Letter and The House of Seven Gables, both of which were published in Boston, Hawthorne reads from some of his short works exploring the dark side of human nature.
Rob Velella is an independent literary historian and playwright specializing in American literature of the nineteenth century. As a scholar, Velella has published articles and presented academic papers on figures as varied as Rufus Griswold, Oliver Wendell Holmes, and Walt Whitman. He served as guest curator for "Margaret Fuller: Woman of the Nineteenth Century" at Harvard's Houghton Library and as research associate for "The Raven in the Frog Pond: Edgar Allan Poe and Boston" for the Boston Public Library. In addition to his dramatic presentations, he maintains the American Literary Blog, an "almost-daily celebration of important (and not-so-important) dates in 19th-century American literary history."
This program is the second in a Special Middays at the Meeting House Series – “Conversations with Hawthorne and Thoreau”: Fridays, October 24 and November 7.
This talk was filmed on November 7, 2014, at the Old South Meeting House.

Taped: 01/27/2003. Suzan-Lori Parks is a Pulitzer prize-winning playwright whose particular style of tragicomedy includes two plays based on Nathaniel Hawthorne's The Scarlet Letter. Here she discusses her development as a playwright (despite not being able to spell) and being "haunted" by a particular subject - which compelled her to write plays about two larger-than-life characters: Hawthorne's Hester Prynne and the almost mythological figure of Abraham Lincoln.
The acclaimed television series 'Women in Theatre' provides a unique look into the lives of some of the gifted women who create and sustain theatre in the United States -- with major directors, designers, actors, lyricists, composers and producers -- conducted by Linda Winer, theatre critic for Newsday. The series' theme song is "The Glamorous Life" from 'A Little Night Music' by Stephen Sondheim, performed by Alex Rybeck, noted pianist and music director. The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne is one of those "Classics" that everyone has heard of and most have not read. If they did read it, it was usually in a high school English class where they learned to hate it. And although the language is older and the plot is painful, the symbols, themes, and meaning are deep. It's truly a work you can learn from over and over and over again.

Learning a new language can be difficult, but it's not impossible. Learning any language can be broken up into four pieces: reading, writing, listening and speaking. If you want to learn English faster, get started with Step 1 below.
Read, read, read. One of the easiest things you can do to learn English faster is to read as much as you can. Read things all the time. This will make your vocabulary better and it will also help you learn grammar and slang.
Read comics. An easy option, if you don't want to read children's books, is to read comic books or comics instead. You can buy many English language comic books in bookstores and online, or you can read free comics online (these are usually called webcomics).
Read books you've read before. You can also read a book you have read before. If you already know a little bit about what happens, then you will have an easier time guessing and understanding the words.
Read the newspaper. Newspapers are a good way to learn the basics of a language, because they usually have very good grammar and are written to be easy to understand. You can find online versions of many good English language newspapers, like the New York Times or The Guardian.
Watch movies. Watching movies will also help you improve your English, by helping you to hear what it sounds like and also helping you to learn new words. You can start watching with subtitles on, but you will learn more with the subtitles off. Once you have a basic vocabulary, try to keep the subtitles off and focus on listening for the words you do know and guessing the words you don't know from what is happening on the screen.
Make a friend. You can also just make friends with English language speakers online and chat, email, and Skype together in order to practice your English. You can find online friends by joining fan communities or through language-learning communities like Fluentify.
Sing songs. Learning and singing songs is another good way to make your English better. This will help you learn the sounds of English (rhymes will help your pronunciation). It will also help improve your vocabulary. Find a song you like, learn it, and learn what the lyrics mean.
Take a course. English courses will help you learn the most important words and grammar and can help you make sure you're learning everything correctly. There are two main ways to take English language courses:
Take an online course. You can take courses online. Some of these cost money and some are free. The ones that cost money may be better than the free ones but not all the time! Good examples of online programs are LiveMocha and Duolingo.
Don't focus too much on grammar. The thing about English is that most people don't speak with perfect grammar and few people even speak with good grammar. If you spend all of your time trying to learn the grammar, you'll waste a bunch of time. Speak incorrectly: it's ok! Someone will correct you and you'll learn over time. Eventually it will sound right and you won't even have to think about it.
Take a course in school. You can take a class from a local college or English language school. These cost money, but the help from the teacher will be very important and will help you learn faster than trying to learn on your own.
Write in a journal. This will force you to practice your writing and vocabulary. It will also force you to practice making new sentences, instead of just repeating sentences you already know. You can keep a diary of your day. You should also keep a small journal where you write down new words when you hear or see them.
Don't try to learn with flashcards. Generally, you should not use flashcards with only words (with the English word on one side and your word on the other). This teaches you to translate everything inside your head, making you slow to understand the English you hear. Instead, try to learn the English word with a sound or picture.
Travel to an English-speaking nation. Traveling to a place where everyone speaks English will help you learn a lot faster. Take a temporary job or a study abroad course in an English-speaking country. You can also take shorter trips, but immersing yourself in the language for at least 3 months will help the most.
