How America Got Its Name - Another insightful video clip from the Drive Thru History series and my buddies at http://www.ColdWaterMedia.com While great works of art and science were being produced in Florence, Italy, its most famous explorer and mapmaker, Amerigo Vespucci, was commissioned by the king and queen of Spain to further investigate the new lands discovered by Christopher Columbus. Between 1499 and 1502, Vespucci discovered the land mass we now call South America. He was convinced this land was part of a new continent, a bold contention at a time when other European explorers crossing the Atlantic Ocean thought they were reaching Asia. So it is Amerigo Vespucci that is generally given the credit for figuring out Columbus had found a whole new world and not India and China. In 1507, Martin Waldseemuller produced a world map on which he named the new continent "America." But why America? Well, Waldseemuller took Amerigo Vespucci's first name and Latinized it to "Americus" because at the time Latin was the universal language for European maps. But Americus is a man's name, and Mr. Waldseemuller as a highly-trained map-making professional knew that continents, like ships, are always female. So Waldseemuller took it upon himself to feminize "Americus" to "America," and the rest is history. La Nave Scuola Amerigo Vespucci, il veliero più ammirato ed anche invidiato dell'intero globo, dopo oltre un anno di permanenza in bacino nell’Arsenale Militare di La Spezia, lo scorso 23 aprile ha ultimato le attività di carenamento ed è finalmente tornata in galleggiamento. La sosta lavori, sancita con l’ingresso nella darsena Arsenale il 24 ottobre 2013, è stata caratterizzata soprattutto dalla permanenza in bacino iniziata lo scorso 5 marzo 2014, finalizzata ad un generale ammodernamento dell’Unità - senza eguali nell’intera vita di Nave Vespucci - per difficoltà e portata degli interventi, necessari per continuare ad impiegare l’Unità, simbolo indiscusso della storia e delle tradizioni della nostra Marina, nell’importante ruolo di Nave Scuola e ambasciatrice sui mari del mondo. Nei precedenti 84 anni di vita, solo in altre quattro occasioni la Nave è stata interessata da soste lavori per “grande manutenzione”, per le quali le Campagne di Istruzione a favore degli Allievi non sono state effettuate, ovvero nel 1940, 1964, 1973 e 1997. Le lavorazioni per la vecchia signora dei mari, che vedono il suo equipaggio impegnato senza mai risparmiarsi per poterla rivedere al più presto solcare le acque in tutto il suo splendore, prevedono nella loro totalità un generale rinnovamento di tutti i sistemi ormai vetusti, la completa sostituzione dell’apparato di propulsione e generazione dell’energia, la nuova installazione di gran parte dell’impianto elettrico, la sostituzione della linea d’asse, dell’elica e della macchina del timone, il rinnovamento di parte dei sistemi di telecomunicazione e navigazione, la manutenzione dell’intera alberata, la rivisitazione delle cucine e dell’area sanitaria, un generale miglioramento degli standard qualitativi di vita a bordo ed una maggiore flessibilità logistica per l’impiego del personale militare femminile e, nell’ambito delle missioni dual-use, del personale civile, tra cui ricercatori e rappresentanti del mondo dell’informazione; il tutto senza minimamente alterare le aree storiche dell’Unità. In particolare, durante questo periodo in bacino è stato applicato sulla carena un trattamento anti-vegetativo privo di sostanze tossiche (i.e. biocidi) e non inquinante (la c.d. pittura siliconica), nell’ottica di massima tutela dell’ambiente marino, da sempre principio cardine della Marina Militare. L'intenzione è quella di proiettare Nave Vespucci verso il futuro, preservando comunque le tradizioni del passato e, in attesa di poterla ammirare quanto prima in mare, renderla disponibile agli Allievi dell’Accademia Navale ed ai visitatori di tutto il mondo.

The island contains many animals of various sorts, and much water in swamps, and seeing that it offered no profit whatever, we departed and went to another island. We found that this other island was inhabited by very tall people. We landed to see whether there was any fresh water, and not thinking it was inhabited, as we had not seen anyone, we came upon very large footprints in the sand, as we were walking along the beach. We judged that if the other measurements were in proportion to those of their feet, they must be very tall. Going in search, we came into a road which led inland. There were nine of us. Judging that there could not be many inhabitants, as the island was small, we walked over it to see what sort of people they were. When we had gone about a league we saw five huts, which appeared to be uninhabited, in a valley, and we went to them. But we only found five women, two old, and three children of such lofty stature that, for the wonder of the thing, we wanted to keep them. When they saw us they were so frightened that they had not the power to run away. The two old women began to invite us with words, and to set before us many things, and took us into a hut. They were taller than a large man who may well be tall, such as was Francesco degli Albizi, but better proportioned. Our intention was to take the young girls by force, and to bring them to Castille as a wonderful thing. While we were forming this design there entered by the door of the hut as many as thirty-six men, much bigger than the women, and so well made that it was a rare thing to behold them. They, in like manner, put us into such a state of perturbation that we rather wished we were on board, than having dealings with such people. They carried very large bows and arrows, and great clubs with knobs. They talked among themselves in a tone as if they wished to destroy us. Seeing ourselves in such danger, we made various suggestions one to another. Some proposed that we should attack them in the hut, and others said that it would be better to do so outside, while others advised that we should not take any action until we saw what the natives were going to do. We at last agreed to go out of the hut, and walk away in the direction of the ships as if nothing had happened, and this we did. Having taken our route to return to the ships, they also came along behind us at a distance of about a stone's throw, talking among themselves. I believe they had not less fear of us than we of them; for sometimes we stopped to rest, and they did so also without coming nearer. At last we came to the beach, where the boats where waiting for us. We got in, and, when we were some way from the shore, the natives rushed down and shot many arrows; but we then had little fear of them. We replied with two bombard-shots, more to frighten them than to do them harm. They all fled into the woods, and so we took leave of them, thankful to escape after a dangerous adventure. They all went naked like the others. We called this island the Island of the Giants, by reason of their stature.

L'Amerigo Vespucci est un voilier-école italien. Il appartient à la Marina militare, la marine militaire italienne, utilisé à la formation des élèves officiers. Il est actuellement l'un des plus ancien trois-mâts carré à naviguer, le plus ancien navire-école de la marine italienne en service et un des plus grands voiliers école militaire du monde. Le voilier porte le nom du célèbre navigateur italien Amerigo Vespucci. Il est basé à Gênes. Ce voilier est la copie d'une frégate militaire de la deuxième moitié du XIXe siècle, le Re Galantuomo. Construit à Naples à la demande de Benito Mussolini, il est issu du projet de Francesco Rotundi, lieutenant colonel du Génie naval et a été entièrement construit aux chantiers navals de Castellammare di Stabia en 1930 et mis à l'eau le 22 février 1931. Le 15 octobre 1931, dans le port de Gênes, l'unité reçut son premier pavillon des mains de son premier commandant, Augusto Radicati di Marmorito. Sa mission était de former le officiers de la Regia Marina avec le Christophe Colomb, son sister-ship. À la fin de la Seconde Guerre mondiale, le Christophe Colomb a été cédé à l'URSS en indemnisation de dommages de guerre. De 1946 à 1952 il a donc été l'unique navire voilier école de la marine militaire italienne. Ceci jusqu'à la mise en service de l'Ebe, une goélette brigantine construite en 1921 et achetée par la marine militaire en 1952. La devise du navire, officialisée en 1978, est : Pas celui qui commence mais celui qui persévère. Cette devise exprime la vocation du navire à la formation des futurs officiers de la Marine Militaire. Les devises précédentes étaient : Pour la patrie et pour le Roi ; remplacée en 1946 par : Solides dans la furie des vents et des événements. La formation des élèves se déroule par l'intermédiaire de campagnes de formation. En 2012, il effectue sa 77e campagne. Chaque croisière d'instruction emprunte un itinéraire différent. Le navire école s'est rendu en Europe du Nord 37 fois, en Méditerranée 20 fois, en Atlantique Oriental 4 fois, en Amérique du Nord 7 fois, en Amérique du Sud 1 fois. Le voilier a bouclé une fois le tour du monde. Au cours de la dernière décennie, en plus de la formation à la mer, le voilier a souvent joué le rôle d'ambassadeur de l'art, de la culture et de l'ingénierie italienne. Pour cela, à l'occasion de faits marquants, il a fait escale dans les plus importants ports du monde : À Auckland (Nouvelle-Zélande), en octobre 2002 à l'occasion de la 31e édition de la Coupe de l'America ; plus récemment à Athènes en 2004 à l'occasion des Jeux olympiques et à Portsmouth en 2005 où il a tenu un rôle de premier plan, pour la commémoration de la bataille de Trafalgar. Le voilier maintient vivantes les traditions anciennes. Les voiles sont encore en toile de jute, les cordages toujours en fibres végétales. Toutes les manœuvres sont exécutées manuellement. Chaque ordre est donné par le commandant, par l'intermédiaire du maître d'équipage, au sifflet de manœuvre. À la coupée, à l'embarquement et au débarquement des autorités, les honneurs au sifflet de gabier sont rendus, selon les rangs et les grades. En 2006, 75 ans après sa mise en service, d'importants travaux d'entretien du navire ont été effectués auprès de l'Arsenal Militaire Maritime de La Spezia. Ceux-ci ont consisté au remplacement complet du mat de trinquette, à cause des limites d'usure atteints. Ce mât a été réalisé à l'identique en utilisant les méthodes artisanales d'origine. Quelques tôles rivetées de la coque ont été changées par d'habiles artisans. La passerelle de navigation a été modernisée et équipée de systèmes de navigation GPS et de transmissions par satellites. Il a participé à l'Armada 2008 (rassemblement de voiliers à Rouen, France) du 5 au 14 juillet 2008, pour la seconde fois.
