The President of South Vietnam lived and worked here until the Fall of Saigon in 1975 when North Vietnamese tanks crashed through the front gates and the president surrendered. The inside seems pretty much untouched since that time. You can see the war planning rooms, receiving rooms, dining rooms, bedrooms, movie theater, kitchen and the secret passageway that goes 2 kilometers underground to the airport. In 1962 two air force pilots bombed the palace instead of bombing the Viet Cong-one wing was destroyed but the president and his family survived the assassination attempt.

Reunification Palace
Saigon's Reunification Palace was designed by Ngo Viet Thu for South Vietnam's former President, Ngo Dinh Diem, during the American War.
The official handover of power took place here on April 30, 1975 and the place became a monument to that fateful date. The highlight is the basement that looks like a wartime movie set. Near Reunification Palace is 30-4 Park, one of the better HCMC green spaces.
Reunification Palace was once known as Independence Palace before the fall of Saigon to communists. Arguable the most famous moment in its history was in April 1975 when tanks broke through the main gates.
Inside, be sure to check out the command bunker dotted with creaky radio equipment and tactical maps pinned to the walls. Put Reunification Palace near the top of your must-see HCMC sights.

Travel Vietnam Ep(4/10): Ho Chi Minh City, the largest city in Vietnam. Still called Saigon by locals. Motorbikes and scooters are very popular and flood the streets. District 1 is a popular business district and tourist area with plenty of historical sights, shopping, restaurants, and nightlife.
Re-released 2015 with bonus footage, more helpful location details, travel tips, and better audio and music. My apologies for the shaky camera and phone footage when my primary camera died. I was still learning about making videos when I originally shot this in 2013. My equipment and technique has greatly improved in my more recent videos.

Travel Tips:
Your hotel must get a copy of your passport and travel visa by law.
English was not common at all, even in the touristy District 1. Good idea to learn some basic words in Vietnamese like: Hello, thank you, No, friend, etc.
Get your hotel reception staff to organise taxis, tours, and advice on fair prices.
Most hotels have small local maps and cards in English, so you can use them communicate with taxi drivers.
Traffic may seem hectic and chaotic, but they make it work. When you cross the road on foot, do it slowly and traffic will avoid you. If you run, traffic cannot predict you, so may hit you.
HCMC is the government name of the city, the locals still call it Saigon. Many shops, maps, and even travel bookings will say Saigon.
When shopping at markets, try negotiate 1/4 (25%) the seller's price. Then negotiate and barter from there. Eg if its priced VD1000K offer VD250K. Most sellers at Ben Than Market will have higher prices for tourists and foreigners. Do a lap and check out a few vendors first to compare prices, or go to a different market.
The average basic worker earns VD 200K a day. So tipping VD 40-50K is pretty generous.
I found the locals very conservative / traditional. They were often camera shy, and would even hide. Many businesses would not allow camera use on their premises, or they get very upset.
Locals were also scared of undercover police (eg being camera shy). Police in general are known for being tough on crime and having zero tolerance.

Reunification Palace (formerly known as Independence Palace) has stayed in the mind of many generations of not only Vietnamese but also foreigners. It is known as the famous historical witness which passed through the two fierce wars against the French and American colonists. The palace was built on the site of the former Norodom Palace, a landmark in Ho Chi Minh City and designed by architect Ngo Viet Thu. As Vietnam was split into North Vietnam and South Vietnam, the building served as presidential home and workplace.
Reunification Palace’s architecture is a blend of traditional ritual and modern architecture, typical of the 60s’. The building now functions as a museum, where visitors can view the F5E fighter plane which bombed the palace on 8thApril 1975 and tank 843 which led the final assault through the palace gate at 11.30AM on 30th April 1975.
Its current address is at 135 Nam Ky Khoi Nghia Street, District 1, Ho Chi Minh City - right at one end of Le Duan Street. It borders other 3 streets: Huyen Tran Cong Chua Street in the back, Nguyen Thi Minh Khai Street on the right and Nguyen Du on the left.

The Palace stands on the site of Norodom Palace. From 1887 to 1945, all Governors-General of French Indochina used this palace as their residence and office. Between March and September 1945, Japan replaced the defeated French as the occupying forces and on their defeat, the palace once again handed over to the French. In 1954, France surrendered to the Viet Minh and Norodom Palace was handed over to the prime minister of the new Republic
of Vietnam. The following year the Palace became the home of the President of the Republic and was renamed Independence Hall. In February 1962, the Hall suffered an aerial attack by two dissident Republic of Vietnam Air Force pilots, out to assassinate the President. Almost the whole of the left wing of the Hall was destroyed.
President Diem decided to build a new palace instead of restoring the old Hall. He employed a Vietnamese architect, Ngo Viet Thu who had won the prestigious Grand Prix de Rome in 1955.
Construction began in 1962 and was not completed until 1966. President Diem never lived to see the completed Palace as he was assassinated in November 1963...........
The building is most notable for its symbolic role in the fall of Saigon in April 1975, when its gates were breached by North Vietnamese tanks and the victor's flag hung on the balcony.

The President of South Vietnam lived and worked here until the Fall of Saigon in 1975 when North Vietnamese tanks crashed through the front gates and the president surrendered. The inside seems pretty much untouched since that time. You can see the war planning rooms, receiving rooms, dining rooms, bedrooms, movie theater, kitchen and the secret passageway that goes 2 kilometers underground to the airport. In 1962 two air force pilots bombed the palace instead of bombing the Viet Cong-one wing was destroyed but the president and his family survived the assassination attempt.

Re-released 2015 with bonus footage, more helpful location details, travel tips, and better audio and music. My apologies for the shaky camera and phone footage when my primary camera died. I was still learning about making videos when I originally shot this in 2013. My equipment and technique has greatly improved in my more recent videos.

Travel Tips:
Your hotel must get a copy of your passport and travel visa by law.
English was not common at all, even in the touristy District 1. Good idea to learn some basic words in Vietnamese like: Hello, thank you, No, friend, etc.
Get your hotel reception staff to organise taxis, tours, and advice on fair prices.
Most hotels have small local maps and cards in English, so you can use them communicate with taxi drivers.
Traffic may seem hectic and chaotic, but they make it work. When you cross the road on foot, do it slowly and traffic will avoid you. If you run, traffic cannot predict you, so may hit you.
HCMC is the government name of the city, the locals still call it Saigon. Many shops, maps, and even travel bookings will say Saigon.
When shopping at markets, try negotiate 1/4 (25%) the seller's price. Then negotiate and barter from there. Eg if its priced VD1000K offer VD250K. Most sellers at Ben Than Market will have higher prices for tourists and foreigners. Do a lap and check out a few vendors first to compare prices, or go to a different market.
The average basic worker earns VD 200K a day. So tipping VD 40-50K is pretty generous.
I found the locals very conservative / traditional. They were often camera shy, and would even hide. Many businesses would not allow camera use on their premises, or they get very upset.
Locals were also scared of undercover police (eg being camera shy). Police in general are known for being tough on crime and having zero tolerance.

As Vietnam was split into North Vietnam and South Vietnam, the building served as presidential home and workplace.
Reunification Palace’s architecture is a blend of traditional ritual and modern architecture, typical of the 60s’. The building now functions as a museum, where visitors can view the F5E fighter plane which bombed the palace on 8thApril 1975 and tank 843 which led the final assault through the palace gate at 11.30AM on 30th April 1975.
Its current address is at 135 Nam Ky Khoi Nghia Street, District 1, Ho Chi Minh City - right at one end of Le Duan Street. It borders other 3 streets: Huyen Tran Cong Chua Street in the back, Nguyen Thi Minh Khai Street on the right and Nguyen Du on the left.
