The Incense trade route or the Incense Road of Antiquity (see also the spice trade) comprised a network of major ancient land and sea trading routes linking the Mediterranean world with Eastern and Southern sources of incense, spices and other luxury goods, stretching from Mediterranean ports across the Levant and Egypt through Northeastern Africa and Arabia to India and beyond. The incense land trade from South Arabia to the Mediterranean flourished between roughly the 7th century BCE to the 2nd century CE. The Incense Route served as a channel for trading of goods such as Arabian frankincense and myrrh; Indian spices, precious stones, pearls, ebony, silk and fine textiles; and the Horn of African rare woods, feathers, animal skins and gold.
The Egyptians had traded in the Red Sea, importing spices, gold and exotic wood from the "Land of Punt" and from Arabia. Indian goods were brought in Arabian and Indian vessels to Aden. Rawlinson identifies the long-debated "ships of Tarshish," as a Tyrian fleet equipped at Ezion-Geber that made several trading voyages to the east bringing back gold, silver, ivory and precious stones. These goods were transhipped at the port of Ophir.
According to one historian:
“ In the ancient period, it would seem that South Arabia and the Horn of Africa were the major suppliers of incense, while in modern times the commercial centre for the trade in gums has been Aden and Oman. Early ritual texts from Egypt show that incense was being bought to the upper Nile by land traders, but perhaps the most spectacular evidence of this trade is provided by the frescos dated to around 1500 BCE on the walls of the temple at Thebes commemorating the journey of a fleet that the Queen of Egypt had sent to the Land of Punt. Five ships are depicted in these reliefs, piled high with treasure, and one of them shows thirty-one small incense trees in tubs being carried on board. ”
“ The Periplus Maris Erythraei and other Greek texts refer to several coastal sites in Somalia, Southern Arabia and India involved with trade in frankincense, myrrh, cassia, bdellium and a range of gum resins termed duaka and kankamon and mok rotu.
Among the important trading points of the Incense Route from the Persian Gulf to the Mediterranean Sea was Gerrha in the Persian Gulf, reported by the historian Strabo to have been founded by Babylonian exiles as a Chaldean colony. Gerrha exercised influence over the incense trade routes across Arabia to the Mediterranean and controlled the aromatics trade to Babylon in the 1st century BC. Gerrha was one of the important entry ports for goods shipped from India.

Belly Dance at Mamshit Incense trade Route
The Incense trade route or the Incense Road of Antiquity comprised a network of major ancient trading routes linking the Mediterranean world with Eastern sources of incense (and spices), stretching from Mediterranean ports across the Levant and Egypt through Arabia to India. The incense trade flourished from South Arabia to the Mediterranean between roughly the 3rd century BCE to the 2nd century CE. The Incense Route served as a channel for trading of goods such as Arabian frankincense and myrrh Indian spices, ebony, silk and fine textiles and East African rare woods, feathers, animal skins and gold.
Mamshit is the Nabataean city of Memphis. In the Nabataean period, Mamshit was an important station on Incense Road, running from the Idumean Mountains, through the Arabah and Ma'ale Akrabim, and on to Beer-Sheva or to Hebron and Jerusalem. The city covers 10 acres (40,000 m2) and is the smallest but best restored city in the Negev Desert. The once-luxurious houses feature unusual architecture not found in any other Nabataean city.
The reconstructed city gives the visitor a sense of how Mamshit once looked. Entire streets have survived intact, and there are also large groups of Nabataean buildings with open rooms, courtyards, and terraces. The stones are carefully chiseled and the arches that support the ceiling are remarkably well constructed.

A conflict between two neighbours - On the left is Neighbour A speaking to them that incense burning along the common corridor is wrong and all the burnt incense paper are being disposed everywhere along the corridor when the wind comes.
On the right inside the unit is Neighbour B, he is not happy with Neighbour A because he is being complaint against for not washing the common corridor properly which results in the strain of black incense paper cluttered along the corridor. It is very obvious that Neighbour B (The guy on the right in the unit is wrong) because incense burning along the common corridor is wrong according to the mandatory Town Council Regulations. What make it worst is, the man in the unit (Neighbour B) feels that he is in the right postion to do what he is doing.and no comment is to be made since he has already wash the common corridor, (but the corridor is still in a mess after washing).
He confronted Neighbour A and threaten to call 10 Indian workers (from his co-company) to talk to her about this issue. (is obvious a form of threat is ongoing). There are several times he tried to use form of physical abuse as seen in this video, but there is someone in the unit who is holding him back in that situation.
A scene that Neighbour B (the man in the unit, on the right) is wrong and yet he feels that he is in the correct position to confront others, and at the same time threaten. Lots of conflict arises from neighbours not following rules and regulations and is the Town Council doing anything. No, issue has been raised and yet there is no reply from the Town Council for a long period of time.

The ancient city of Al-`Ula is arguably one of the Middle East’s most impressive ghost towns, located along the Incense Road in northwestern Saudi Arabia. Once the capital of the Ancient North Arabian kingdom of Lihyan, its patchwork of stone ruins – some over 2000 years old – blend seamlessly into the surrounding desert.
According to the Harran Inscriptions, Nabonidus of Babylonia led a military campaign in the region around 552 BC, conquering the Tayma oasis, Dedan (old Lihyan) and the ancient city of Yathrib (modern Medina).
Hundreds of years later, Lihyan was ruled by the Nabataeans until their capital at Petra was overthrown by Rome in 106 AD. The Nabataeans thus relocated to Hegra, now known as Mada’in Saleh (above), 13 miles from Al-`Ula.
The old settlement played host to the Prophet Muhammad in 630 AD while allegedly en route to engage Byzantine forces at the Battle of Tabuk. But it wasn’t until the 1200s that Al-`Ula became a major hub, the foundations of its ancient buildings reused in the making of the ruined city we see today.

A conflict between two neighbours - On the left is Neighbour A speaking to them that incense burning along the common corridor is wrong and all the burnt incense paper are being disposed everywhere along the corridor when the wind comes. On the right inside the unit is Neighbour B, he is not happy with Neighbour A because he is being complaint against for not washing the common corridor properly which results in the strain of black incense paper cluttered along the corridor. It is very obvious that Neighbour B (The guy on the right in the unit is wrong) because incense burning along the common corridor is wrong according to the mandatory Town Council Regulations. Saudi Arabia’s 2,000 Year Old Ghost Town of Al `Ula
The ancient city of Al-`Ula is arguably one of the Middle East’s most impressive ghost towns, located along the Incense Road in northwestern Saudi Arabia. Once the capital of the Ancient North Arabian kingdom of Lihyan, its patchwork of stone ruins – some over 2000 years old – blend seamlessly into the surrounding desert. According to the Harran Inscriptions, Nabonidus of Babylonia led a military campaign in the region around 552 BC, conquering the Tayma oasis, Dedan (old Lihyan) and the ancient city of Yathrib (modern Medina). The Incense trade route or the Incense Road of Antiquity (see also the spice trade) comprised a network of major ancient land and sea trading routes linking the Mediterranean world with Eastern and Southern sources of incense, spices and other luxury goods, stretching from Mediterranean ports across the Levant and Egypt through Northeastern Africa and Arabia to India and beyond. The incense land trade from South Arabia to the Mediterranean flourished between roughly the 7th century BCE to the 2nd century CE. The Incense Route served as a channel for trading of goods such as Arabian frankincense and myrrh; Indian spices, precious stones, pearls, ebony, silk and fine textiles; and the Horn of African rare woods, feathers, animal skins and gold.
The Egyptians had traded in the Red Sea, importing spices, gold and exotic wood from the "Land of Punt" and from Arabia. Indian goods were brought in Arabian and Indian vessels to Aden. Rawlinson identifies the long-debated "ships of Tarshish," as a Tyrian fleet equipped at Ezion-Geber that made several trading voyages to the east bringing back gold, silver, ivory and precious stones. These goods were transhipped at the port of Ophir.
According to one historian:
“ In the ancient period, it would seem that South Arabia and the Horn of Africa were the major suppliers of incense, while in modern times the commercial centre for the trade in gums has been Aden and Oman. Early ritual texts from Egypt show that incense was being bought to the upper Nile by land traders, but perhaps the most spectacular evidence of this trade is provided by the frescos dated to around 1500 BCE on the walls of the temple at Thebes commemorating the journey of a fleet that the Queen of Egypt had sent to the Land of Punt. Five ships are depicted in these reliefs, piled high with treasure, and one of them shows thirty-one small incense trees in tubs being carried on board. ”
“ The Periplus Maris Erythraei and other Greek texts refer to several coastal sites in Somalia, Southern Arabia and India involved with trade in frankincense, myrrh, cassia, bdellium and a range of gum resins termed duaka and kankamon and mok rotu.
Among the important trading points of the Incense Route from the Persian Gulf to the Mediterranean Sea was Gerrha in the Persian Gulf, reported by the historian Strabo to have been founded by Babylonian exiles as a Chaldean colony. Gerrha exercised influence over the incense trade routes across Arabia to the Mediterranean and controlled the aromatics trade to Babylon in the 1st century BC. Gerrha was one of the important entry ports for goods shipped from India.

Entire streets have survived intact, and there are also large groups of Nabataean buildings with open rooms, courtyards, and terraces. The stones are carefully chiseled and the arches that support the ceiling are remarkably well constructed.

A scene that Neighbour B (the man in the unit, on the right) is wrong and yet he feels that he is in the correct position to confront others, and at the same time threaten. Lots of conflict arises from neighbours not following rules and regulations and is the Town Council doing anything. No, issue has been raised and yet there is no reply from the Town Council for a long period of time.

The route so helped enhance trade between the ancient Roman Empire and the Indian subcontinent, that Roman politicians and historians are on record decrying the loss of silver and gold to buy silk to pamper Roman wives, and the southern route grew to eclipse and then totally supplant the overland trade route.
Roman and Greek traders frequented the ancient Tamil country, present day Southern India and Sri Lanka, securing trade with the seafaring Tamil states of the Pandyan, Chola and Chera dynasties and establishing trading settlements which secured trade with South Asia by the Greco-Roman world since the time of the Ptolemaic dynastya few decades before the start of the Common Era and remained long after the fall of the Western Roman Empire. As recorded by Strabo, Emperor Augustus of Rome received at Antioch an ambassador from a South Indian king called Pandyan of Dramira. The country of the Pandyas, Pandi Mandala, was described as Pandyan Mediterranea in the Periplus and Modura Regia Pandyan by Ptolemy. They also outlasted Byzantium's loss of the ports of Egypt and the Red Sea (c. 639-645 CE) under the pressure of the Muslim conquests. Sometime after the sundering of communications between the Axum and Eastern Roman Empire in the 7th century, the Christian kingdom of Axum fell into a slow decline, fading into obscurity in western sources. It survived, despite pressure from Islamic forces, until the 11th century, when it was reconfigured in a dynastic squabble
The Seleucid dynasty controlled a developed network of trade with South Asia which had previously existed under the influence of the Achaemenid Empire. The Greek Ptolemaic dynasty, controlling the western and northern end of other trade routes to Southern Arabia and South Asia, had begun to exploit trading opportunities in the region prior to the Roman involvement but, according to the historian Strabo, the volume of commerce between South Asians and the Greeks was not comparable to that of later Indo-Roman trade.
The Periplus Maris Erythraei mentions a time when sea trade between Egypt and the subcontinent did not involve direct sailings. The cargo under these situations was shipped to Aden:
Aden - Arabia Eudaimon was called the fortunate, being once a city, when, because ships neither came from India to Egypt nor did those from Egypt dare to go further but only came as far as this place, it received the cargoes from both, just as Alexandria receives goods brought from outside and from Egypt.

The domestication of camels allowed Arabian nomads to control the long distance trade in spices and silk from the Far East to the Arabian Peninsula. Caravans were useful in long-distance trade largely for carrying luxury goods, the transportation of cheaper goods across large distances was not profitable for caravan operators. With productive developments in iron and bronze technologies, newer trade routes—dispensing innovations of civilizations—began to rise.
Maritime trade
Evidence of maritime trade between civilizations dates back at least two millennia. Navigation was known in Sumer between the 4th and the 3rd millennium BCE, and was probably known by the Indians and the Chinese people before the Sumerians. The Egyptians had trade routes through the Red Sea, importing spices from the "Land of Punt" (East Africa) and from Arabia.
Evolution of Indian trade networks. The main map shows the routes since Mughal times, Inset A shows the major prehistorical cultural currents, B: pre-Mauryan routes, C: Mauryan routes, D: routes c. 1st century CE, and E: the "Z" shaped region of developed roads.
Maritime trade began with safer coastal trade and evolved with the manipulation of the monsoon winds, soon resulting in trade crossing boundaries such as the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal. South Asia had multiple maritime trade routes which connected it to Southeast Asia, thereby making the control of one route resulting in maritime monopoly difficult. Indian connections to various Southeast Asian states buffered it from blockages on other routes. By making use of the maritime trade routes, bulk commodity trade became possible for the Romans in the 2nd century BCE. A Roman trading vessel could span the Mediterranean in a month at one-sixtieth the cost of over-land routes.

The peninsula of Anatolia lay on the commercial land routes to Europe from Asia as well as the sea route from the Mediterranean to the Black Sea. Records from the 19th century BCE attest to the existence of an Assyrian merchant colony at Kanesh in Cappadocia (now in modern Turkey). Trading networks of the Old World included the Grand Trunk Road of India and the Incense Road of Arabia. A transportation network consisting of hard-surfaced highways, using concrete made from volcanic ash and lime, was built by the Romans as early as 312 BCE, during the times of the Censor Appius Claudius Caecus. Parts of the Mediterranean world, Roman Britain, Tigris-Euphrates river system and North Africa fell under the reach of this network at some point of their history.

In 1900 the Ottoman Sultan ordered the construction of the Hedjaz Railroad. It was designed to unite the Ottoman Empire that had begun to disintegrate as well as to transport Moslem pilgrims to Medina in the Hedjaz Mountains. Around thirty kilometres northwest of Amman is As-Salt that is situated between two mountain slopes. Up until the First World War this city that had a good supply of water and enjoyed a good climate, was the main metropolis of Trans-Jordan. Saladin had this fortress built on a twelve hundred metre high hill in 1184. Qal’at Ajlun was meant to be a defence against the approaching Crusaders and also to protect pilgrims on their way to Mecca. At an altitude of eight hundred metres is a place of great significance for the Jewish and Christian faiths, Nebo Mountain, where God revealed to Moses the Promised Land for the first time after his forty year journey from Egypt. Pharaohs, Assyrian kings and Persian monarchs once fought for this country. Nabateans, Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, Crusaders and Ottomans, each of them left their traces in Jordan.Amman is Jordan’s capital city in which, poverty and wealth live side by side. The King Abdullah Mosque is the largest and, due to its striking blue cupola, the most beautiful mosque in Amman. Although only completed in 1988 it is an important symbol of Islam and five times a day the Muezzin calls to the faithful from its Minaret. In 1900 the Ottoman Sultan ordered the construction of the Hedjaz Railroad. It was designed to unite the Ottoman Empire that had begun to disintegrate as well as to transport Moslem pilgrims to Medina in the Hedjaz Mountains. Around thirty kilometres northwest of Amman is As-Salt that is situated between two mountain slopes. Up until the First World War this city that had a good supply of water and enjoyed a good climate, was the main metropolis of Trans-Jordan. Saladin had this fortress built on a twelve hundred metre high hill in 1184. Qal’at Ajlun was meant to be a defence against the approaching Crusaders and also to protect pilgrims on their way to Mecca. At an altitude of eight hundred metres is a place of great significance for the Jewish and Christian faiths, Nebo Mountain, where God revealed to Moses the Promised Land for the first time after his forty year journey from Egypt. If the Dark Version is purchased, included with the game is a Making Of DVD, the game's soundtrack on CD, a world map, a Witcher medallion, a quest handbook, the game manual, an art book, stickers and a special box to hold everything in.
