Reel 1.
Intertitle gives viewer a brief introduction to the history of British Guiana. Georgetown on the Demerara River - the capital. View from on board a boat. The Government Ferry. La Penitence Wharf. People stand on the docks. Views of the Georgetown streets from the front of a tram. Another tram passes in the opposite direction. Men laying tram tracks move out of the way as the tram approaches.
We see Georgetown police station. Also seen are lorries crammed with people, tree lined avenues, grand colonial buildings etc. Armistice Day parade. British Guiana Militia and Police form a Guard of Honour. Golf is popular in Georgetown. Well-to-do white men and their wives arrive at a golf course by car. We see some of the men teeing off. They have a black caddie. Cricket and tennis are also played in Georgetown. Queen's College is the big school and football is the popular game. Views of the Botanical Gardens from a moving vehicle. A group of young people pose for the cameras. One of the women smokes and another sits under a parasol. They walk along a path and a car drives past.
The British Militia band plays by the sea wall. Children walk along the sea wall. The band plays in a bandstand. The fire brigade - the men run out of a building and climb aboard a fire engine. Two engines drive off down the street. Fire fighting techniques are demonstrated. The firemen are black, there is a white supervisor. Two fire floats - the "Vesta" and "Alert" keep watch on the quay side.

Reel 2.
Industries of British Guiana. Demerara sugar. Plantation workers climb aboard a train/tractor contraption to take them to work. We see some labourer's cottages in the countryside. Then we see a newly reaped corn field. Workers sit by the side of a river. The ground is ploughed b a tractor pulling a plough.
A man cuts sugar cane with a simple hand tool. Workers in the field cut cane with scythes. Cane is loaded into punts which are towed down the canal by donkeys to the factory. Cane is transported to the milling plant by a conveyor belt. Top shot of several punts filled with sugar cane. Cane is loaded onto belt by a winch. Grooved rollers give the cane a preliminary crushing. Interior of factory. Processes are shown. C/U of roller mills which squeeze out the juice. The fibre from the cane stalks is collected and used as fuel for boiler furnaces. Juice is heated to remove impurities.
Man in pith helmet inspects a sample. The clear juice is concentrated in vacuum pans. Thick substance called massecuite is result - this is separated into molasses and pure sugar by a centrifugal machine. Tests are made at every stage of the process. We see two men in a laboratory. Molasses is poured on to a piece of paper, a pile of sugar is tested by picking up with the fingers to test the texture. Bagging, loading and shipping keep large number of people employed. We see men performing these tasks. Loading sacks of sugar up by a ship's gangplank. These are then lifted on to the boat.

Mike Thomson investigates how Britain covertly manipulated the democratic process in its South American colony, then known as British Guiana, in the run-up to its independence in 1966. Mike discovers new documents showing that a conference held to determine the country's future was deliberately scuppered.
On the face of it, the conference, held in London in October 1963, was designed to confirm the constitutional future of British Guiana. Publicly Britain encouraged the country's Prime Minister Dr Cheddi Jagan – who had been fairly elected in 1961 – and the leader of the opposition, Linden Forbes Burnham, to agree terms for independence. However, documents reveal that, behind the scenes, the British were working to a different outcome – to ensure that agreement was never reached.
The British, under pressure from the Kennedy administration which feared Dr Jagan's Marxist leanings, were determined that he would not lead the country to independence. To this end they suggested a form of proportional representation in forthcoming elections, knowing full well that Dr Jagan would not agree to these terms as they would favour his rival. When the conference ended in deadlock, as the British hoped it would, proportional representation was duly implemented and the following year Dr Jagan was ousted, much to the relief of the superpowers.

British Guiana was the name of the British colony on the northern coast of South America, now the independent nation of Guyana.
The area was originally settled by the Dutch at the start of the 17th century as the colonies of Essequibo, Demerara, and Berbice. These three colonies were captured by the British in 1796; they were returned to the (Dutch) Batavian Republic in 1802, but were again captured by British forces a year later and were officially ceded to the United Kingdom in 1814, and consolidated into a single colony in 1831. The colony's capital was at Georgetown (known as Stabroek prior to 1812). Guyana went on to become independent of the United Kingdom on 26 May 1966.
There had been at least two unsuccessful attempts by the English to colonise the lands that would later be known as British Guiana during the 17th century, when the Dutch had established two colonies in the area: Essequibo, administered by the Dutch West India Company, and Berbice, administered by the Berbice Association. A third colony, Demerara, was established under the West India Company in the mid-18th century. Effective British control began in 1796 during the French Revolutionary Wars, at which time the Netherlands were under French occupation and Great Britain and France were at war. A British expeditionary force was dispatched from its colony of Barbados to seize the colonies from the French-dominated Batavian Republic. The colonies surrendered without a struggle, and initially very little changed, as the British agreed to allow the long-established laws of the colonies to remain in force.

Mike Thomson investigates how Britain covertly manipulated the democratic process in its South American colony, then known as British Guiana, in the run-up to its independence in 1966. Mike discovers new documents showing that a conference held to determine the country's future was deliberately scuppered. On the face of it, the conference, held in London in October 1963, was designed to confirm the constitutional future of British Guiana. Publicly Britain encouraged the country's Prime Minister Dr Cheddi Jagan – who had been fairly elected in 1961 – and the leader of the opposition, Linden Forbes Burnham, to agree terms for independence. British Guiana 1¢ Magenta stamp sold for $9.5 million
The world's most legendary postage stamp, the unique 1856 British Guiana 1¢ Magenta, was auctioned June 17 at Sotheby's in New York for a record-shattering $9.48 million. That figure, which includes a 20 percent buyer's commission, is almost exactly 10 times what the stamp last sold for in 1980 — then also a record price. Industries of British Guiana. Demerara sugar. Plantation workers climb aboard a train/tractor contraption to take them to work. We see some labourer's cottages in the countryside. Then we see a newly reaped corn field. Workers sit by the side of a river. The ground is ploughed b a tractor pulling a plough.
A man cuts sugar cane with a simple hand tool. Workers in the field cut cane with scythes. Cane is loaded into punts which are towed down the canal by donkeys to the factory. Cane is transported to the milling plant by a conveyor belt. Top shot of several punts filled with sugar cane. Cane is loaded onto belt by a winch. Grooved rollers give the cane a preliminary crushing. Interior of factory. Processes are shown. C/U of roller mills which squeeze out the juice. The fibre from the cane stalks is collected and used as fuel for boiler furnaces. Juice is heated to remove impurities.
Man in pith helmet inspects a sample. The clear juice is concentrated in vacuum pans. Thick substance called massecuite is result - this is separated into molasses and pure sugar by a centrifugal machine. Tests are made at every stage of the process. We see two men in a laboratory. Molasses is poured on to a piece of paper, a pile of sugar is tested by picking up with the fingers to test the texture. Bagging, loading and shipping keep large number of people employed. We see men performing these tasks. Loading sacks of sugar up by a ship's gangplank. These are then lifted on to the boat.

Mike Thomson investigates how Britain covertly manipulated the democratic process in its South American colony, then known as British Guiana, in the run-up to its independence in 1966. Mike discovers new documents showing that a conference held to determine the country's future was deliberately scuppered.
On the face of it, the conference, held in London in October 1963, was designed to confirm the constitutional future of British Guiana. Publicly Britain encouraged the country's Prime Minister Dr Cheddi Jagan – who had been fairly elected in 1961 – and the leader of the opposition, Linden Forbes Burnham, to agree terms for independence. However, documents reveal that, behind the scenes, the British were working to a different outcome – to ensure that agreement was never reached.
The British, under pressure from the Kennedy administration which feared Dr Jagan's Marxist leanings, were determined that he would not lead the country to independence. To this end they suggested a form of proportional representation in forthcoming elections, knowing full well that Dr Jagan would not agree to these terms as they would favour his rival. When the conference ended in deadlock, as the British hoped it would, proportional representation was duly implemented and the following year Dr Jagan was ousted, much to the relief of the superpowers.

Through out the British Empire it was thought that slavery was abolished in 1833, but the British plantation owners wouldn't have it. It reveals the trials and tribulations of both the resilent African slaves and the unsuspecting Indians from Calcutta who were sold on the golden dreams of "El Dorado" only to find themselves on a slave ship to hard labor in an unforgiving land. Each faced perils at the hands of British plantation owners who positioned these two exploited people against each other. The character of Laxman defies centuries of colonial exploitation and forces the hand of the British Empire to ultimately enforce the abolition of slavery once and for all.

With the colonization different plants come to the island, such as cocoa and sugar cane. Plantations of these plants were driven with the labour force of slaves until the abolishment of slavery in 1833.

Ian Flemming was inspired by the book "Birds of the West Indies", written by the ornithologist james Bond, who made his research on Tobago and gave its name to the very famous protagonist of his romans: the British secret agent, Commander James Bond.
The documentation shows also the different fishing methods of the tobagonians. Some still fish in a very traditional manner by throwing the fishing nets into the sea and pull them back on the beach. The locals sell the fish at the market in Scarborough.
"Liming" ist the tobagonian art of doing nothing. People get together, drink and play cards. And of course music plays an important role on the village. Every Sunday is Sunday school, a huge street party featuring bands playing the steelpan.

The beauty of the nature of Tobago once inspired Daniel Defoe to let his famous castaway Robinson Crusoe land there. The island appeared to the hero as a planted Garden of Eden, and it is still impressive today. "Main Rich Forest Reserve" is the earliest preserved virgin rainforest in the western hemisphere (since 1776).
Arawak people were the first settlers on the island. Later the Caribs came from South America. The name Chistopher Columbus gave the island in 1498 was Bellaforma, later it became the name Tobago from Tobacco, which was growm on the island. Tobago was colonised by the British Empire. With the colonization different plants come to the island, such as cocoa and sugar cane. Plantations of these plants were driven with the labour force of slaves until the abolishment of slavery in 1833.

The French Caribbean Island Guadeloupe looks from above like two butterfly wings. Its two islands Grande Terre and Basse Terre are separated only by a narrow channel. The modern infrastructure and the good food are mixed with the local culture. Gwoka is the music of Guadeloupe, which is reminiscent of slavery.
Located on the lesser Antilles, Guadeloupe is the French part of the Caribbean and belongs to the European Union. It consists out of different islands: Grande Terre consists of limestone with long beautiful beaches, Basse Terre is a mountainous island with extensive rainforest and the volcano, la Soufrière. There are also the smaller islands of Marie-Galante and La Désirade, the Îles de la Petite Terre and the Îles des Saintes.
When Christopher Columbus came to Guadeloupe in 1493, the existing populations were the Caribs. But Christopher Columbus did not stay, because the Spanish wanted to discover larger islands. The smaller island in the Caribbean were colonized by the British and French, so in 1635 Guadeloupe by the French. It was mainly farmers from Normandie, Brittany and Charente settled on the island and cultivated Coffee and sugarcane plantations.
With the French revolution, slavery was abolished in 1794, but it was reintroduced by Napoleon in 1802 because of the cheap labour and lasted until 1848.
The civilization today is creole, a melting pot: French, the descendants of black slaves, Indian immigrants, Syrian-Libanese immigrants and nowadays Chinese immigrants. Creole cuisine is a mixture of European food with African ingredients, oriental flavours and products from the Caribbean.

Caribbean Moments shows a different side to the Caribbean. Everyone visualises sand, sunshine and palm trees – but hardly anyone really discovers what lies behind them. In fact an unbelievable variety of cultures, music and religions has developed as a result of the different influences – African, Indian, English, French and authentically Caribbean.
This documentary series attempts to portray the people - be they the Rastas, who have a lot to say about their mission, the Amerindians in Trinidad, who still have their own Queen, or the Black Caribs – a mixture of escaped slaves and Caribs.
In addition, of course, there’s a huge variety of music: steelpan, parang, calypso, soca and chutney soca shape Trinidad, whilst other islands are especially scenically beautiful, such as Dominica, which is actually a single rain forest and which seduces with its abundant vegetation. Here too are the true Caribs, who occupy themselves with traditional boat building in the same way as their ancestors did centuries ago.
The films were produced in 6 parts to create a documentary series that shows what lies beneath the surface.
