The man who is literally being eaten alive: Jaw-dropping video shows thousands of maggots feasting on his brain
Clip shows larvae eating away at grapefruit-sized crevice in man's head
The man, thought to be from
South America, can be heard talking on clip
Only 8 cases of cerebral myiasis, a larvae infection in the brain, reported
Horrifying footage has emerged of maggot's eating away at a giant
hole in a man's head.
The skin-crawling clip shows the unidentified man with a
deep crevice in his skull, teaming with millions of larvae.
The deep, fleshy wound looks alive as it ripples with the squirming grubs, in scenes that resemble something from a horror film.
As he moves his head, the full, hideous extent of the grapefruit size wound becomes clear as the creatures feast on what looks like his brain.
The wriggling larvae can be seen burrowing away in a bloody pool of fleshy brain matter as he reaches to touch the wound with his hand.
The shocking video shows myiasis - an infection with a fly larvae, usually occurring in tropical and subtropical areas.

The 22-second clip has been watched thousands of times since it was uploaded to LiveLeak by Orlando-based Mr Smith305 yesterday.
Only eight cases of cerebral myiasis, an infection in the brain, in humans have been reported worldwide
Yet, shockingly, the infected man, thought to be in South America, can be heard talking to someone as another exclaims '
It's impossible' as they film the grotesque injury.
Maggots are known to feed off human flesh and if left untreated, can chew and destroy the bones and soft tissues of the face, nose and eyes.
This can lead to infection in the eyes and brain, and occasionally cause meningitis and even death.
The grisly case echoes one in the
New England Journal of Medicine where a man had more than
100 flesh-eating maggots removed from his nose.
The patient, from
Sao Paulo, Brazil, was suffering from nasal myasis – where the nose and sinuses become infested with the larvae of flies.
Although in the latest clip the type of maggots have not been identified, it is likely they are cochliomyia hominivorax, which is well known for the way its larvae eats the flesh of warm-blooded animals.
WHAT IS THE COCHLIOMYIA HOMINIVORAX?
The
Cochliomyia hominivorax fly is also known as the
Primary screwworm or the
New World screwworm.
It is found in
Central and South America and in certain
Caribbean Islands.
It is well known for the way its larvae eats the flesh of warm-blooded animals.
Female adult flies lay their eggs in batches of 200-400 eggs, in rows that overlap like tiles around a fresh wound.
After 12–21 hours, the larvae hatch, crawl into the wound, and burrow into the flesh, feeding on wound fluids and tissue.
