When presented together, the two propositions in this video are obviously silly, yet only one of them is recognized as such. Why? Perhaps it has something to do with how our standards shift when we’re dealing with reality as opposed to dealing with something far more fantastical. Perhaps it also has something to do with having a well established political and social system of norms and traditions backing up and perpetuating one of those silly propositions, often presented to us by loved ones when we were vulnerable children, or emotionally compromised by something.
Why do people accept such silly beliefs, but then live as though they don’t actually believe those things? Perhaps it’s because servitude to a lifetime of running from the whip, whilst chasing the carrot, is too exhausting. I tend to think it’s just not real enough for them, and they’re lying to themselves, a skin-deep lie, because they want it to be true. Maybe they don’t believe as sincerely as their facade makes it seem. After all, if I believed my existence in eternity depends upon what I do in this fleeting instant of a life, then my every waking moment would be devoted to that eternity. Yet that’s not what we see when we look at most believers. We see people standing in line at the bank. We see people sitting in traffic, suffering occasional road rage. We see people not concerned with eternity. We see people concerned with reality.

A poem I wrote to highlight the difference between Jesus and false religion. In the scriptures Jesus received the most opposition from the most religious people of his day. At it's core Jesus' gospel and the good news of the Cross is in pure opposition to self-righteousness/self-justification. Religion is man centered, Jesus is God-centered. This poem highlights my journey to discover this truth. Religion either ends in pride or despair. Pride because you make a list and can do it and act better than everyone, or despair because you can't do your own list of rules and feel "not good enough" for God. With Jesus though you have humble confident joy because He represents you, you don't represent yourself and His sacrifice is perfect putting us in perfect standing with God the Father.

The practice of a religion may also include sermons, commemoration of the activities of a god or gods, sacrifices, festivals, feasts, trance, initiations, funerary services, matrimonial services, meditation, music, art, dance, public service, or other aspects of human culture. However, there are examples of religions for which some or many of these aspects of structure, belief, or practices are absent.

George Denis Patrick Carlin (May 12, 1937 – June 22, 2008) was an American stand-up comedian, social critic, satirist, actor and writer/author, who won five Grammy Awards for his comedy albums.
Carlin was noted for his black humor as well as his thoughts on politics, the English language, psychology, religion, and various taboo subjects. Carlin and his "Seven Dirty Words" comedy routine were central to the 1978 U.S. Supreme Court case F.C.C. v. Pacifica Foundation, in which a narrow 5–4 decision by the justices affirmed the government's power to regulate indecent material on the public airwaves.
The first of his fourteen stand-up comedy specials for HBO was filmed in 1977. In 1988, the 1990s and 2000s, Carlin's routines focused on socio-cultural criticism of modern American society. He often commented on contemporary political issues in the United States and satirized the excesses of American culture. His final HBO special, It's Bad for Ya, was filmed less than four months before his death.

Clinton Richard Dawkins, FRS, FRSL (born 26 March 1941), known as Richard Dawkins, is a British ethologist, evolutionary biologist and author. He is an emeritus fellow of New College, Oxford, and was the University of Oxford's Professor for Public Understanding of Science from 1995 until 2008.
Dawkins came to prominence with his 1976 book The Selfish Gene, which popularised the gene-centered view of evolution and introduced the term meme. In 1982 he introduced an influential concept into evolutionary biology, presented in his book The Extended Phenotype, that the phenotypic effects of a gene are not necessarily limited to an organism's body, but can stretch far into the environment, including the bodies of other organisms.
Dawkins is an atheist, a vice president of the British Humanist Association, and a supporter of the Brights movement. He is well known for his criticism of creationism and intelligent design. In his 1986 book The Blind Watchmaker, he argued against the watchmaker analogy, an argument for the existence of a supernatural creator based upon the complexity of living organisms. Instead, he described evolutionary processes as analogous to a blind watchmaker. He has since written several popular science books, and makes regular television and radio appearances, predominantly discussing these topics. In his 2006 book The God Delusion, Dawkins contends that a supernatural creator almost certainly does not exist and that religious faith is a delusion—"a fixed false belief." As of January 2010 the English-language version has sold more than two million copies and had been translated into 31 languages.

The evolutionary origin of religions theorizes about the emergence of religious behavior during the course of human evolution. Humanity's closest living relatives are common chimpanzees and bonobos. These primates share a common ancestor with humans who lived between four and six million years ago. It is for this reason that chimpanzees and bonobos are viewed as the best available surrogate for this common ancestor. Barbara King argues that while non-human primates are not religious, they do exhibit some traits that would have been necessary for the evolution of religion. These traits include high intelligence, a capacity for symbolic communication, a sense of social norms, realization of "self" and a concept of continuity. There is inconclusive evidence that Homo neanderthalensis may have buried their dead which is evidence of the use of ritual. The use of burial rituals is evidence of religious activity, but there is no other evidence that religion existed in human culture before humans reached behavioral modernity. Marc Bekoff, Professor Emeritus of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at the University of Colorado, Boulder, argues that many species grieve death and loss. There is general agreement among cognitive scientists that religion is an outgrowth of brain architecture that evolved early in human history. However, there is disagreement on the exact mechanisms that drove the evolution of the religious mind. The two main schools of thought hold that either religion evolved due to natural selection and has selective advantage, or that religion is an evolutionary byproduct of other mental adaptations. Stephen Jay Gould, for example, believed that religion was an exaptation or a spandrel, in other words that religion evolved as byproduct of psychological mechanisms that evolved for other reasons. Such mechanisms may include the ability to infer the presence of organisms that might do harm (agent detection), the ability to come up with causal narratives for natural events (etiology), and the ability to recognize that other people have minds of their own with their own beliefs, desires and intentions (theory of mind). These three adaptations (among others) allow human beings to imagine purposeful agents behind many observations that could not readily be explained otherwise, e.g. thunder, lightning, movement of planets, complexity of life, etc. The emergence of collective religious belief identified the agents as deities that standardized the explanation. Some scholars have suggested that religion is genetically "hardwired" into the human condition. One controversial hypothesis, the God gene hypothesis, states that some variants of a specific gene, the VMAT2 gene, predispose to spirituality. Another view is based on the concept of the triune brain: the reptilian brain, the limbic system, and the neocortex, proposed by Paul D. MacLean. Collective religious belief draws upon the emotions of love, fear, and gregariousness and is deeply embedded in the limbic system through sociobiological conditioning and social sanction. Individual religious belief utilizes reason based in the neocortex and often varies from collective religion. The limbic system is much older in evolutionary terms than the neocortex and is, therefore, stronger than it much in the same way as the reptilian is stronger than both the limbic system and the neocortex. Reason is pre-empted by emotional drives. The religious feeling in a congregation is emotionally different from individual spirituality even though the congregation is composed of individuals. Belonging to a collective religion is culturally more important than individual spirituality though the two often go hand in hand. This is one of the reasons why religious debates are likely to be inconclusive. Yet another view is that the behaviour of people who participate in a religion makes them feel better and this improves their fitness, so that there is a genetic selection in favor of people who are willing to believe in religion. Specifically, rituals, beliefs, and the social contact typical of religious groups may serve to calm the mind (for example by reducing ambiguity and the uncertainty due to complexity) and allow it to function better when under stress. This would allow religion to be used as a powerful survival mechanism, particularly in facilitating the evolution of hierarchies of warriors, which if true, may be why many modern religions tend to promote fertility and kinship. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Evolution_of_religion

When presented together, the two propositions in this video are obviously silly, yet only one of them is recognized as such. Why? Perhaps it has something to do with how our standards shift when we’re dealing with reality as opposed to dealing with something far more fantastical. When presented together, the two propositions in this video are obviously silly, yet only one of them is recognized as such. Why? Perhaps it has something to do with how our standards shift when we’re dealing with reality as opposed to dealing with something far more fantastical. Perhaps it also has something to do with having a well established political and social system of norms and traditions backing up and perpetuating one of those silly propositions, often presented to us by loved ones when we were vulnerable children, or emotionally compromised by something.
Why do people accept such silly beliefs, but then live as though they don’t actually believe those things? Perhaps it’s because servitude to a lifetime of running from the whip, whilst chasing the carrot, is too exhausting. I tend to think it’s just not real enough for them, and they’re lying to themselves, a skin-deep lie, because they want it to be true. Maybe they don’t believe as sincerely as their facade makes it seem. After all, if I believed my existence in eternity depends upon what I do in this fleeting instant of a life, then my every waking moment would be devoted to that eternity. Yet that’s not what we see when we look at most believers. We see people standing in line at the bank. We see people sitting in traffic, suffering occasional road rage. We see people not concerned with eternity. We see people concerned with reality.

A poem I wrote to highlight the difference between Jesus and false religion. In the scriptures Jesus received the most opposition from the most religious people of his day. At it's core Jesus' gospel and the good news of the Cross is in pure opposition to self-righteousness/self-justification. Religion is man centered, Jesus is God-centered. This poem highlights my journey to discover this truth. Religion either ends in pride or despair. Pride because you make a list and can do it and act better than everyone, or despair because you can't do your own list of rules and feel "not good enough" for God. With Jesus though you have humble confident joy because He represents you, you don't represent yourself and His sacrifice is perfect putting us in perfect standing with God the Father.

The evolutionary origin of religions theorizes about the emergence of religious behavior during the course of human evolution.
Humanity's closest living relatives are common chimpanzees and bonobos. These primates share a common ancestor with humans who lived between four and six million years ago. It is for this reason that chimpanzees and bonobos are viewed as the best available surrogate for this common ancestor. Barbara King argues that while non-human primates are not religious, they do exhibit some traits that would have been necessary for the evolution of religion. These traits include high intelligence, a capacity for symbolic communication, a sense of social norms, realization of "self" and a concept of continuity. There is inconclusive evidence that Homo neanderthalensis may have buried their dead which is evidence of the use of ritual. The use of burial rituals is evidence of religious activity, but there is no other evidence that religion existed in human culture before humans reached behavioral modernity.
Marc Bekoff, Professor Emeritus of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at the University of Colorado, Boulder, argues that many species grieve death and loss.
There is general agreement among cognitive scientists that religion is an outgrowth of brain architecture that evolved early in human history. However, there is disagreement on the exact mechanisms that drove the evolution of the religious mind. The two main schools of thought hold that either religion evolved due to natural selection and has selective advantage, or that religion is an evolutionary byproduct of other mental adaptations. Stephen Jay Gould, for example, believed that religion was an exaptation or a spandrel, in other words that religion evolved as byproduct of psychological mechanisms that evolved for other reasons.
Such mechanisms may include the ability to infer the presence of organisms that might do harm (agent detection), the ability to come up with causal narratives for natural events (etiology), and the ability to recognize that other people have minds of their own with their own beliefs, desires and intentions (theory of mind). These three adaptations (among others) allow human beings to imagine purposeful agents behind many observations that could not readily be explained otherwise, e.g. thunder, lightning, movement of planets, complexity of life, etc. The emergence of collective religious belief identified the agents as deities that standardized the explanation.
Some scholars have suggested that religion is genetically "hardwired" into the human condition. One controversial hypothesis, the God gene hypothesis, states that some variants of a specific gene, the VMAT2 gene, predispose to spirituality.
Another view is based on the concept of the triune brain: the reptilian brain, the limbic system, and the neocortex, proposed by Paul D. MacLean. Collective religious belief draws upon the emotions of love, fear, and gregariousness and is deeply embedded in the limbic system through sociobiological conditioning and social sanction. Individual religious belief utilizes reason based in the neocortex and often varies from collective religion. The limbic system is much older in evolutionary terms than the neocortex and is, therefore, stronger than it much in the same way as the reptilian is stronger than both the limbic system and the neocortex. Reason is pre-empted by emotional drives. The religious feeling in a congregation is emotionally different from individual spirituality even though the congregation is composed of individuals. Belonging to a collective religion is culturally more important than individual spirituality though the two often go hand in hand. This is one of the reasons why religious debates are likely to be inconclusive.
Yet another view is that the behaviour of people who participate in a religion makes them feel better and this improves their fitness, so that there is a genetic selection in favor of people who are willing to believe in religion. Specifically, rituals, beliefs, and the social contact typical of religious groups may serve to calm the mind (for example by reducing ambiguity and the uncertainty due to complexity) and allow it to function better when under stress. This would allow religion to be used as a powerful survival mechanism, particularly in facilitating the evolution of hierarchies of warriors, which if true, may be why many modern religions tend to promote fertility and kinship.

Spoiler alert: they fail miserably, and that''s not just my bias, that's how the audience actually felt. The only thing Zeba and Maajid proved was that they wish and hope that Islam will become a religion of peace.
Note: The only parts cut from the debate were the long introduction before the moderator first starts speaking and instances where the moderator repeated the name of the debate and all the debaters, which he did several times. You will see a cut at about 52 minutes in where Maajid is just finishing a sentence. Nothing that he said was cut. After he says "camp" the video cut to the audience and the moderator started announcing the debate information again.
Otherwise, even the questions and answers have been left in at the end.

He has since written 12 more bestsellers, including The God Delusion which sold millions of copies, was translated into more than 30 languages, and catapulted him to the position of the world's foremost atheist.

Rep. Cicilline on State Efforts To Protect Religious Liberty: ‘Allowing Religion To Be Used As An Excuse for Discrimination’ Against Homosexuals -- Rep. David Cicilline (D-R.I.) said at a press conference on Thursday that the bill he sponsored to include “sex,” “sexual orientation,” and “gender identity” as protected classes under the Civil Rights Act of 1964 was needed to counter state laws and proposed state laws that are “allowing religion to be used as an excuse for discrimination.” Cicilline said many state laws -- on the books or proposed -- “legalize discrimination” against homosexuals and can be found in almost 200 bills in 34 states. “They range from allowing religion to be used as an excuse for discrimination to laws denying transgender individuals the use of facilities consistent with their gender identity,” Cicilline said at the press conference on Capitol Hill.
Cicilline and other Democrats at the press conference, including Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and Minority Whip Steny Hoyer (D-Md.), announced a letter was sent on Thursday to Rep. Robert Goodlatte (R-Va.), chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, seeking a hearing on H.R. 3185, the Equality Act. Cicilline said Republicans have not allowed any bills focused on LGBT equality to advance in the House. “Their failure to act has created a vacuum of leadership on this issue and as we all know, nature abhors a vacuum," said Cicilline. "And so in recent weeks we’ve seen state lawmakers who have rushed to fill this vacuum with new laws that legalize discrimination against the LGBT community."
Cicilline said that bills to protect religious liberty or to designate public restrooms for use according to one’s biological sex have already been made law in North Carolina, Mississippi and Tennessee. “We cannot allow this to continue,” Cicilline said. The vocabulary of ancient Roman religion was highly specialized. Its study affords important information about the religion, traditions and beliefs of the ancient Romans. This legacy is conspicuous in European cultural history in its influence on later juridical and religious vocabulary in Europe, particularly of the Western Church. This glossary provides explanations of concepts as they were expressed in Latin pertaining to religious practices and beliefs, with links to articles on major topics such as priesthoods, forms of divination, and rituals.
For theonyms, or the names and epithets of gods, see List of Roman deities. For public religious holidays, see Roman festivals. For temples see the List of Ancient Roman temples. Individual landmarks of religious topography in ancient Rome are not included in this list; see Roman temple.
The verb abominari was a term of augury for an action that rejects or averts an unfavourable omen indicated by a signum, 'sign'. The noun is abominatio, from which English 'abomination' derives. At the taking of formally solicited auspices, the observer was required to acknowledge any potentially bad sign occurring within the templum he was observing, regardless of the interpretation. He might, however, take certain actions in order to ignore the signa, including avoiding the sight of them, and interpreting them as favourable. The latter tactic required promptness, wit and skill based on discipline and learning. Thus the omen had no validity apart from the observation of it.
The aedes was the dwelling place of a god. It was thus a structure that housed the deity's image, distinguished from the templum or sacred district. Aedes is one of several Latin words that can be translated as 'shrine' or 'temple'; see also delubrum and fanum. For instance, the Temple of Vesta, as it is called in English, was in Latin an aedes. See also the diminutive aedicula, a small shrine.
In his work On Architecture, Vitruvius always uses the word templum in the technical sense of a space defined through augury, with aedes the usual word for the building itself. The design of a deity's aedes, he writes, should be appropriate to the characteristics of the deity. For a celestial deity such as Jupiter, Coelus, Sol or Luna, the building should be open to the sky; an aedes for a god embodying virtus, such as Minerva, Mars, or Hercules, should be Doric and without frills; the Corinthian order is suited for goddesses such as Venus, Flora, Proserpina and the Lymphae; and the Ionic is a middle ground between the two for Juno, Diana, and Father Liber. Thus in theory, though not always in practice, architectural aesthetics had a theological dimension.
The word aedilis, a public official, is related by etymology; among the duties of the aediles was the overseeing of public works, including the building and maintenance of temples. I am quite sure the Religious that claim to understand the bible and take the writing within literally rather then figuratively, will find this video very confronting. Christian religion uses Dec 25th as the date on which Jesus was born (i.e. Christmas) - Bible or not. I believe that's the point - that the dominant world religions, like Christianity, are based on other myths that predate Christ by over a 1000 years.
The more we understand the history of religion and how the books were written, the less validity religion has.
Seeking truth is not "luciferian". Christians are so sure they are "right". Yet they cannot accept that if they were brought up in Syria they'd feel just as confident about Islam. If born in India, they'd likely be Hindu. It's just societal indoctrination. The need for these delusions would all be fine, but people are still killing each other in the name of bronze-age mythologies.
We're 300 years past the age of Copernicus. Challenging religion does not eliminate the possibility of God or a power that unites us as human beings, but the "God" that has been taught by churches and kings is not truth. It is a man made ideology that was endorsed for political reasons and control. End of comment

I realize that many of you want (or need) to believe that such writing are the actual Words of God.
While this may be partially true, it should be understood, they were gods with a small "g" meaning not the Creator of All with a bit "G"

But a true pastor is the one who carries out functions of management and education in a Christian church. He cares for the physical, financial, and most importantly the spiritual life of the members.
Although these days the term is most often applied for leaders of Protestant congregations, pastor can be used to some extent for Catholic leaders responsible for taking care of Christians in his church.
There are more religions of the world than we can count; very few of their pastors and members are really serving God. For the false pastors it is all about money, wealth... In fact, most megachurch pastors, such as Joel Osteen, don’t even preach repentance anymore. Whereas Jesus said in Matthew 4:17, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.”
Pastor means "minister of the Holy Gospel"; etymologically he is a servant. That is, unlike what you see false preachers are doing today, the pastors were supposed to serve the church goers, not taking advantage of them. The pastor is simply someone whose job is to lead the worship service (preaching and sacraments), educate and support the religious community according to what the Bible says.
