Mindoro (Tagalog pronunciation: [mɪnˈdoɾo]) is the seventh-largest island in the Philippines. It is located off the coast of Luzon, and northeast of Palawan. The southern coast of Mindoro forms the northeastern extremum of the Sulu Sea.
In past times, it has been called Ma-i or Mait by ancient Chinese traders and, by Spaniards, as Mina de Oro (meaning "gold mine") from where the island got its current name. The island was once a single province from 1920 to 1950 when it was divided into its two present-day provinces, Occidental Mindoro and Oriental Mindoro.
According to the late historian William Henry Scott, an entry in the official history of the Sung Dynasty for the year 972 mentions Ma-i as a trading partner of China. Other Chinese records referring to Ma-i or Mindoro appear in the years that follow.
Prehispanic Source Materials enumerates the products that Mindoro traders exchanged with the Chinese as "beeswax, cotton, true pearls, tortoise shell, medicinal betelnuts and yu-ta [jute?] cloth" for Chinese porcelain, trade gold, iron pots, lead, colored glass beads and iron needles.

Oriental Mindoro (Filipino: Silangang Mindoro, "Eastern Mindoro"; Spanish: Mindoro Oriental) is a province of the Philippines located in the island of Mindoro under MIMAROPA region in Luzon, about 140 km southwest of Manila. The province is bordered by the Verde Island Passage and the rest of Batangas to the north, by Marinduque, Maestro del Ocampo Island, Tablas Strait and the rest of Romblon to the east, by Semirara and the rest of Caluya Islands, Antique to the south, and by Occidental Mindoro to the west. Calapan City, the only city in the island, is the provincial capital.
Oriental Mindoro is touted as the country's emerging eco-tourism destination. In 2005, the Philippines was found to be the center of marine fish biodiversity and the home of the most diverse marine ecosystem in the world, by American biologists Kent Carpenter and Victor Springer. Most of the endemic species in the Philippines are found in the Verde Island Passage between Mindoro island and the main island of Luzon. The passage houses 2,983 individual species of algae, corals, crustaceans, mollusks, fishes, marine reptiles, and marine mammals, based on a study conducted by scientists Carpenter and Springer in 2005.

Nona / Melor strongest typhoon to hit Oriental Mindoro Oriental Mindoro Gov. Alfonso Umali Jr. said Typhoon Nona is the strongest typhoon to hit the province after 20 years. The typhoon made landfall over the province at around 10 a.m. on Tuesday. Since then, the power and communication lines have gone down. The province of Oriental Mindoro is now under a state of calamity. The provincial government is mobilizing resources for relief and rescue operations. It is also verifying reports about four casualties.

If you want to stay really in the village, this is the only guesthouse at the moment. There are also two resorts on the main land:
Felipa Lodge and a resort that the owners of the South Drive are building.
On one of the islands is the Tambaron Green Beach resort.
Our tour was arranged by South Drive. The boy and the girl guiding us were really cool! And they were so obviously enjoying showing us around, I can only advise you to go with them and have fun :)
The island tours (you don't see it obviously in the movie, but we did two separate boatrides) were arranged by South Drive. But you can also walk to the shore and ask the boatmen to take you.

It's best when you arrive here to have some kind of a destination. Don't come here with no idea about where you're going to stay. If you wander around, looking for somewhere to stay, you'll make yourself a target.
Before you come, pick a hotel or somewhere to stay before you arrive. This will enhance your safety.
Once you have that, then you can get yourself organised and you'll have a safe spot to base yourself from.
When you come to the Philippines, you don't need to bring much. What you want to bring is stuff that's waterproof. It's rains here, you'll be riding in boats, on the back of motorcycles, you'll be on the beach, etc. You want a bag that's waterproof.
Don't fill your bag up before you go. Bring as little as possible. You can get everything you need here.

The key to traveling in the Philippines is to always travel light. The lighter the things you carry are, the less punishment your body gets. Especially when traveling to the mountains here in the Philippines or hiking, the extra weight would bring you down and make you get tired faster. When you travel in the Philippines, there’s going to be lots of places you want to go to. So if you have a lot of things with you, you’re going to need a place where you can leave unnecessary stuff from your pack before traveling again. I will give you travel light packing essentials so you don’t have to wonder what to bring.
I certainly understand that a lotta people don't want to plan their vacations too much, wanna be a bit more spontaneous, wanna rock n roll. I understand it, I do it myself, but you want to plan a few things.
You want the right gear. Waterproof backpack. If a laptop, then a small one. Swimsuit. Micro-towel. Focus on nice, lightweight stuff. Get wrinkle free and you won't have to worry about ironing.
There's great adventure here, but you wanna be able to pack light and fast. Packing light will make everything easier. It's one of the best Philippines travel advice tips to remember.
One of the bags that you hang around your waist for your phone, wallet, cash, etc.
If you can buy it in your country, you can buy it here. You can buy Macbooks, bottled water, batteries, etc.
Everything you can get here, so pack light. And everything's cheap here. Laundry is cheap so you won't have to do any laundry.

Another reason why you want pack light in the Philippines is that the transportations system here is NOT seamless. It's not like the West.
To any destination, you may have to take 3 or 4 different types of transportation.
To really enjoy yourself in the Philippines, pack LIGHT. You'll have less to carry and less to worry about. 1 backpack is ideal. Packing light is great! It gives your taxi driver less temptation to steal from you or rip you off. (You'll just look like a poor backpacker!)
All the same... Here's some tips to help make your taxi experiences as simple as possible when you travel in the Philippines
1. Get a taxi in the 'departures' area of the airport
In most international airports the 'arrivals' pickup area is filled with scammers and bad taxi drivers. They've got a continual stream of desperate travelers asking them for rates so they know they can typically quote an insanely high price and still get a passenger.
The departures area is different. These taxi drivers are just dropping off their riders at the airport and are happy to get anyone into their taxi for the drive back into town. Because of this, prices will be lower and you're less likely to find someone trying to drain your wallet of all that foreign currency you just filled it with.
2. Know where you are going before getting in the cab
If you don't know where you are going it's all too easy for you taxi driver to rip you off. They can drive you around in circles, tell you there is traffic on the main route, or even drive you to the other side of town!
Don't give them this opportunity. If your taxi driver sees that you have a map, he'll be less likely to drive you in circles.
3. Don't put your bag in the trunk
It happens all the time. An unknowing tourist puts their bag in the back of an unknown cab and their driver hits the gas before they hop in the passengers seat. Their bag is gone, they have no idea where it's headed, and the police won't help at all!
Keep in mind, the things in your bag may be worth more than your driver will earn in a year or two! Don't tempt them into an early 'bonus'. Losing your luggage and passport on arrival to a new country is a great way to ruin your vacation.

1. Get a taxi in the 'departures' area of the airport
In most international airports the 'arrivals' pickup area is filled with scammers and bad taxi drivers. They've got a continual stream of desperate travelers asking them for rates so they know they can typically quote an insanely high price and still get a passenger.
The departures area is different. These taxi drivers are just dropping off their riders at the airport and are happy to get anyone into their taxi for the drive back into town. Because of this, prices will be lower and you're less likely to find someone trying to drain your wallet of all that foreign currency you just filled it with.
2. Know where you are going before getting in the cab
If you don't know where you are going it's all too easy for you taxi driver to rip you off. They can drive you around in circles, tell you there is traffic on the main route, or even drive you to the other side of town!
Don't give them this opportunity. If your taxi driver sees that you have a map, he'll be less likely to drive you in circles.
3. Don't put your bag in the trunk
It happens all the time. An unknowing tourist puts their bag in the back of an unknown cab and their driver hits the gas before they hop in the passengers seat. Their bag is gone, they have no idea where it's headed, and the police won't help at all!
Keep in mind, the things in your bag may be worth more than your driver will earn in a year or two! Don't tempt them into an early 'bonus'. Losing your luggage and passport on arrival to a new country is a great way to ruin your vacation.

Of course, you don’t have to buy nice motorcycles whenever you plan to go traveling here in the Philippines. You can just find a motorcycle rental shop, hop into one, and drive around the city looking for some attractions in Manila. Motorcycles are not absolutely necessary if you want to get the most of traveling here in the Philippines, but it is a really convenient way to drive around town, especially in a traffic jam.
