For much of the world, individual prosperity and happiness are tied to the economic progress of a country and a key economic indicator used by various governments is the GDP or gross domestic product.
This paradigm essentially implies that more we produce, happier we will be.
The small country of Bhutan has challenged that notion by using Gross National Happiness or GNH as a key indicator for its progress vs. the commonly used Gross Domestic Product.
Located between the two Asian powerhouses - China and India, Bhutan has a tremendously rich culture as well as immense natural beauty. In 1972, the King of Bhutan at that time came up with the term "gross national happiness" as a guiding principle for country's future progress.
More recently, at a Columbia University event in 2010, the Prime Minister of Bhutan, Prime Minister Thinley described GNH :
While some argue such ideas are hard to implement at a practical level, Bhutan seems to incorporate them into every fabric of its society.
New York Times noted in a 2009 article on Bhutan that "Under a new Constitution adopted last year, government programs — from agriculture to transportation to foreign trade — must be judged not by the economic benefits they may offer but by the happiness they produce."
Even Bhutan's tourism video emphasizes the notion of happiness:
The rest of the world seems to be taking note of GNH. The United Nations is starting to implement a resolution based on the GNH Concept that was passed in 2011. Titled "Happiness: towards a holistic approach to development", it recognizes that the gross domestic product does not adequately reflect the happiness and well-being of people,"
Ultimately, the challenge lies in measuring the effectiveness of GNH. And there are inherent difficulties in applying such a concept to larger, more complex societies. We all want to pursue happiness but how we go about that pursuit as a society and individuals still seems to be up for debate.

The assessment of gross national happiness (GNH; Dzongkha: རྒྱལ་ཡོངས་དགའ་སྐྱིད་དཔལ་འཛོམས་; Wylie: rgyal-yongs dga'a-skyid dpal-'dzoms) was designed in an attempt to define an indicator that measures quality of life or social progress in more holistic and psychological terms than only the economic indicator of gross domestic product (GDP).
The term "gross national happiness" was coined in 1972 by Bhutan's fourth Dragon King, Jigme Singye Wangchuck, who has opened Bhutan to the age of modernization soon after the demise of his father, Jigme Dorji Wangchuk. He used this phrase to signal his commitment to building an economy that would serve Bhutan's unique culture based on Buddhist spiritual values. At first offered as a casual, offhand remark, the concept was taken seriously, as the Centre for Bhutan Studies, under the leadership of Karma Ura, developed a sophisticated survey instrument to measure the population's general level of well-being. The Canadian health epidemiologist Michael Pennock had a major role in the design of the instrument and uses (what he calls) a "de-Bhutanized" version of the survey in his work in Victoria, British Columbia. Ura and Pennock have collaborated on the development of policy screening tools which can be used to examine the potential impacts of projects or programs on GNH.

One day, he met a destitute woman named Aum Demola in a remote village in Bhutan. "Her most prized asset was her leftover meal from the previous night that she kept under lock in a wooden box in her bamboo hut," says Nima. "She had the key around her neck." Tears well in Nima's eyes as he recalls. "This experience taught me the real meaning of you don't know where your next meal is coming from. It shook my conscience. It gave me a calling." He spent the next three years walking to more than 300 remote villages in Bhutan, helping thousands like her. Nima believes that you can change the world better when you truly lead with empathy. "Happiness is being human first," Nima smiles. For much of the world, individual prosperity and happiness are tied to the economic progress of a country and a key economic indicator used by various governments is the GDP or gross domestic product.
This paradigm essentially implies that more we produce, happier we will be.
The small country of Bhutan has challenged that notion by using Gross National Happiness or GNH as a key indicator for its progress vs. the commonly used Gross Domestic Product.
Located between the two Asian powerhouses - China and India, Bhutan has a tremendously rich culture as well as immense natural beauty. In 1972, the King of Bhutan at that time came up with the term "gross national happiness" as a guiding principle for country's future progress.
More recently, at a Columbia University event in 2010, the Prime Minister of Bhutan, Prime Minister Thinley described GNH :
While some argue such ideas are hard to implement at a practical level, Bhutan seems to incorporate them into every fabric of its society.
New York Times noted in a 2009 article on Bhutan that "Under a new Constitution adopted last year, government programs — from agriculture to transportation to foreign trade — must be judged not by the economic benefits they may offer but by the happiness they produce."

One day, he met a destitute woman named Aum Demola in a remote village in Bhutan. "Her most prized asset was her leftover meal from the previous night that she kept under lock in a wooden box in her bamboo hut," says Nima. "She had the key around her neck."
Tears well in Nima's eyes as he recalls. "This experience taught me the real meaning of you don't know where your next meal is coming from. It shook my conscience. It gave me a calling." He spent the next three years walking to more than 300 remote villages in Bhutan, helping thousands like her.
Nima believes that you can change the world better when you truly lead with empathy. "Happiness is being human first," Nima smiles.

The response I got is local organic agriculture (the official agriculture policy of Bhutan), renewable energy (Bhutan is 100% renewable powered from run-of-river hydro), good governance, strong vibrant communities, micro-enterprise, satisfying, right livelihood, universally available holistic health care, environmental protection, and daily life grounded in deep spirituality rather than excess materialism. I am struck by how close this is to a description of the western Sustainability Movement in general and the Sustainable Living program at Maharishi University of Management in particular. We're working to develop collaborative programs with institutions in Bhutan to explore these connections both at the Sustainable Living Program campus in Fairfield Iowa and in Bhutan.
