Britain will launch air strikes against
Isis extremists in
Syria within hours after MPs endorsed by a majority of 174
David Cameron’s plan to bomb what he called “medieval murderers”.
After a day of high drama at
Westminster, dozens of
Labour MPs ignored their leader
Jeremy Corbyn and backed military action; Britain will now join
France in a
US-led coalition committed to attacking Isis in its heartlands.
For Mr
Cameron the 397 to 223 victory came as a huge relief, helping to erase the painful memory of his Commons defeat over Syria in
2013, when he lost a vote to start bombing
Bashar al-Assad’s forces.
The result came at the end of a passionate and acrimonious debate lasting
10½ hours, in which Mr
Corbyn claimed that extending
RAF action from
Iraq to Syria would increase the risk of Isis attacks in the UK.
Such was the
Labour split that shadow foreign secretary
Hilary Benn closed the debate by defying his leader, pleading with MPs to do their “moral duty” by standing up to “fascists” and backing RAF attacks in Syria.
Mr Corbyn sat grimly through
Mr Benn’s powerful oration which was greeted with rapturous applause, normally banned in the chamber.
Philip Hammond, foreign secretary, hailed it as “outstanding — one of the great speeches”.
Mr Benn was joined by other Labour heavyweights including
Alan Johnson,
Margaret Beckett and
Yvette Cooper in supporting military action.
Tory sources said that
Harriet Harman, former Labour deputy leader, and
Rosie Winterton, the party’s chief whip, were among those backing the government. A spokesman for Mr Corbyn said a majority of Labour MPs had backed the leader’s position and he had “increased his authority” in the party.
Many MPs from all parties expressed scepticism about the value of Britain joining the coalition and about Mr
Cameron’s claim that the western forces could co-ordinate bombing of Isis with 70,
000 “moderate”
Syrian forces.
Julian Lewis,
Tory chairman of the Commons defence committee, said they were “bogus battalions”, drawing parallels with
Tony Blair’s “dodgy dossier” that made the case for war in Iraq in
2003.
But Mr Cameron’s victory marks the culmination of attempts in recent weeks to reassert Britain on the world stage and clears the way for air strikes by
British jets within days or even hours.
