Freshwater biology is the scientific biological study of freshwater ecosystems and is a branch of limnology. It seeks to understand the relationships between living organisms in freshwater and their physical and chemical environment. The discipline is also widely used in a number of industrial processes such as sewage treatment and water purification which utilise biological processes to effect purification.
In the UK the Freshwater Biological Association is based near Windermere in Cumbria.
Introduction to Aquarium Science: Aquarium science is a new series, that will discover different scientific theories and facts in different genres like physics, biology and chemistry. Stay tuned for lots more of these coming up, and get some amazing facts from a science geek, which is myself. I've developped some theories and experimented myself, and i'm gonna present it to you guys. In this episode of aquarium science, we'll be discussing freshwater aquarium biology. Do not worry though, because a video with marine biology is gonna come aswell, so stay tuned! Here we will discuss the nitrogen cycle, the food chain system, and different zoological facts and lake biology. Enjoy! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Links: Boyw...
Purchase this DVD here http://www.greatpacificmedia.com/ Segment from the program: Aquatic Biomes: Oceans, Lakes, Rivers, and Wetlands. DVD Description Our Aquatic Biomes DVD begins by looking at the characteristics common to all aquatic environments. The program then examines the littoral, limnetic and profundal zones of freshwater lakes, the seasonal cycling of O2 and nutrients, and the difference between oligotrophic and eutrophic lakes before observing how life changes along the course of rivers and explaining the ecological importance of wetlands. The photic, aphotic, and benthic ocean zones are then described and marine habitats such as tide pools, kelp forests, coral reefs, and vent communities explored.
For this lab practical, entitled 'Freshwater Biota and their Environment', LJMU students investigated water and samples they collected from a lake in Ellesmere, in Shropshire, two weeks before by the students. Plankton samples contained phyto- and zooplankton. Students were asked to work in groups to identify the phytoplankton and zooplankton taxa in the samples. Part of the practical involves staff demonstrating how to use the microscopes to identify the organisms. The students also carried out some basic water quality tests.
Footage from my freshwater biology class at the PCC Rock Creek labs I created this video with the YouTube Video Editor (http://www.youtube.com/editor)
In this class, students learn what percentage of the Earth is fresh water and how to conserve it. They will also venture outdoors and use scoop nets to find macro-invertebrates. Students will learn the characteristics of invertebrates -- reproduction, nutrition, protection and locomotion -- and discuss the importance of these creatures to the ecosystem. At the conclusion of this module, youngsters will leave with an understanding of an amazing, rarely seen world. This class can be teamed with Water Quality to gain a greater appreciation for one of the Earth's most important resources. (Weather Dependent.) ECU graduate Holly Winkle was impressed with how much time she got to spend in the field (or the lake) while studying Marine & Freshwater Biology and Environmental Sciences with us. Plus the flexibility of her course allowed her to combine her favourite subjects too. The Biology SAT test is coming up! Are you ready? In this short video, I will explain a difference between saltwater and freshwater fish, something that you should most definitely know. I feed my fish, so you should feed my ego! This is a video about saving Freshwater Streams and Rivers!
Experiment conducted at Jorgensen Animal Kingdom shows that Blue Legged Hermit Crabs can live in freshwater. Test subject Hermes, shows signs of excellent health and displays normal behavioral patterns such as eating, climbing and scavenging after an extensive 36 hour acclamation from salt to freshwater last week.
