A Badly Broken Code is the debut album by Dessa, a member of Minneapolis indie hip hop collective Doomtree. It was released on Doomtree in 2010. The album title comes from a line in the poem "Nostalgia" by American poet Billy Collins.

*Dessa is Margret Wander (born 23 May 1981), better known by her stage name Dessa, is a rapper, singer, spoken word artist, and writer from Minneapolis, Minnesota. She is a member of the indie hip hop collective Doomtree. Dessa went to Southwest High School, graduating from the I.B. program in 1999. She attended the University of Minnesota, where she earned a B.A. in philosophy. Before becoming an artist full-time, she worked as a technical writer for a medical manufacturer. Initially drawn to their raw aesthetics and unique sound, Dessa forged a friendship with Doomtree. Soon after, she started dating P.O.S. Though they eventually ended their relationship, she was asked nonetheless to join the crew, and did so. Since 2005, Dessa has appeared on numerous Doomtree albums, as well as on the other members' solo albums. Dessa's debut solo EP False Hopes was released in 2005. Despite being only fifteen minutes long, it was listed as one of the top local albums of the year by Minneapolis Star Tribune. She completed and released a book of creative non-fiction titled Spiral Bound at the fourth annual Doomtree Blowout in 2008. In 2009, Dessa published Spiral Bound on Doomtree Press, a seventy-page collection of fiction and poetry. Dessa's first solo album, A Badly Broken Code, was released on January 19, 2010. The singles from this album are "Dixon's Girl" and "The Chaconne." The album features production from Paper Tiger, MK Larada, Lazerbeak, Cecil Otter and Big Jess. MK Larada also designed the album art. Dessa is a founding member of The Boy Sopranos, an almost all-female a cappella group, with frequent collaborators Jessy Greene, Aby Wolf and others. She also teaches at the Institute of Production and Recording and the McNally Smith College of Music. On March 2, 2012, Dessa presented "Mic Lines: Art, Ethics, and their Contested Connections" at Augsburg College in Minneapolis, Minnesota, as part of the three-day Nobel Peace Prize Forum. Her new album "Parts of Speech" is out now.

Part of the Twin Cities hip-hop collective Doomtree, rapper, singer, poet and songwriter Dessa divides her time between singing and rapping, often landing on a spoken-word splitting of the difference. The week she performed this Tiny Desk Concert, she appeared at an All Songs Considered live listening party, during which she opined articulately before closing the night by singing Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah" in the style popularized by Jeff Buckley. This year, the former philosophy major released both a new album (Parts of Speech) and a chapbook of poetry called A Pound of Steam.
As versatile as she is, Dessa faced down a string of challenges in getting to the Tiny Desk. Near the tail-end of a tour — during which thousands of dollars' worth of her band's gear was stolen — her voice started to give out as she battled a bad cold. (Keep an eye out for her expression of relief at the completion of "The Man I Knew" in this set.) And, of course, Dessa and her band had to come up with ways to perform three songs from Parts of Speech in such a way that the drums and guitars wouldn't drown out the unamplified voices of herself and singer Aby Wolf.
Once we started recording, though, the seams never showed, let alone split: If it weren't for a bit of between-song tea-sipping, we'd have never known she was under the weather. Instead, what we got was as forceful and whip-smart as everything else Dessa sings, speaks, raps and writes. --STEPHEN THOMPSON

Dessa (born Margret Wander) is a rapper from Minneapolis, Minnesota. She is best known as a member of the indie hip hop collective Doomtree. She is also a spoken word artist, radio host for Cities 97[citation needed] and writer.
Dessa went to Southwest High School. She attended the University of Minnesota, where she earned a B.A. in Philosophy. Before becoming an artist full-time, Dessa was a technical writer for a medical manufacturer.
Dessa started out writing spoken word poetry. A friend eventually convinced her to join the Minnesota slam poetry team. Her poetry was brought to the attention of MC Yoni, with whom she would go on to form the group Medida (along with Omaur Bliss and producer Ronin), her first foray into hip-hop. Yoni would be instrumental in shaping her understanding of hip-hop history, and later on would also be the first to introduce Dessa to the music of Doomtree, who unbeknownst to her lived in the house next door.
Initially drawn to their raw aesthetics and unique sound, Dessa forged a friendship with Doomtree. Soon after, she started dating P.O.S. Though they eventually ended their relationship, she was asked nonetheless to join the crew, and did so. Since 2005, Dessa has appeared on numerous Doomtree's albums, as well as on the other members' solo albums.

Part of the Twin Cities hip-hop collective Doomtree, rapper, singer, poet and songwriter Dessa divides her time between singing and rapping, often landing on a spoken-word splitting of the difference. *Dessa is Margret Wander (born 23 May 1981), better known by her stage name Dessa, is a rapper, singer, spoken word artist, and writer from Minneapolis, Minnesota. She is a member of the indie hip hop collective Doomtree. Dessa went to Southwest High School, graduating from the I.B. program in 1999. She attended the University of Minnesota, where she earned a B.A. in philosophy. Before becoming an artist full-time, she worked as a technical writer for a medical manufacturer. Initially drawn to their raw aesthetics and unique sound, Dessa forged a friendship with Doomtree. Soon after, she started dating P.O.S. Though they eventually ended their relationship, she was asked nonetheless to join the crew, and did so. Since 2005, Dessa has appeared on numerous Doomtree albums, as well as on the other members' solo albums. Dessa's debut solo EP False Hopes was released in 2005. Despite being only fifteen minutes long, it was listed as one of the top local albums of the year by Minneapolis Star Tribune. She completed and released a book of creative non-fiction titled Spiral Bound at the fourth annual Doomtree Blowout in 2008. In 2009, Dessa published Spiral Bound on Doomtree Press, a seventy-page collection of fiction and poetry. Dessa's first solo album, A Badly Broken Code, was released on January 19, 2010. The singles from this album are "Dixon's Girl" and "The Chaconne." The album features production from Paper Tiger, MK Larada, Lazerbeak, Cecil Otter and Big Jess. MK Larada also designed the album art. Dessa is a founding member of The Boy Sopranos, an almost all-female a cappella group, with frequent collaborators Jessy Greene, Aby Wolf and others. She also teaches at the Institute of Production and Recording and the McNally Smith College of Music. On March 2, 2012, Dessa presented "Mic Lines: Art, Ethics, and their Contested Connections" at Augsburg College in Minneapolis, Minnesota, as part of the three-day Nobel Peace Prize Forum. Her new album "Parts of Speech" is out now.

The week she performed this Tiny Desk Concert, she appeared at an All Songs Considered live listening party, during which she opined articulately before closing the night by singing Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah" in the style popularized by Jeff Buckley. This year, the former philosophy major released both a new album (Parts of Speech) and a chapbook of poetry called A Pound of Steam.
As versatile as she is, Dessa faced down a string of challenges in getting to the Tiny Desk. Near the tail-end of a tour — during which thousands of dollars' worth of her band's gear was stolen — her voice started to give out as she battled a bad cold. (Keep an eye out for her expression of relief at the completion of "The Man I Knew" in this set.) And, of course, Dessa and her band had to come up with ways to perform three songs from Parts of Speech in such a way that the drums and guitars wouldn't drown out the unamplified voices of herself and singer Aby Wolf.
Once we started recording, though, the seams never showed, let alone split: If it weren't for a bit of between-song tea-sipping, we'd have never known she was under the weather. Instead, what we got was as forceful and whip-smart as everything else Dessa sings, speaks, raps and writes. --STEPHEN THOMPSON

For September's Band of The Month feature, we caught up with philosopher, rapper, storyteller, Doomtree member and poignantly beautiful soul Dessa on a beautiful morning in the Hollywood hills, for an intimate performance featuring several tracks off her excellent new album Parts of Speech as well as an interview session.
We kicked off our BOTM: Dessa feature with an intimate performance of her heartwrenching track "Call Off Your Ghost," and followed up with a uniquely stripped-down rendition of "The Lamb". Continuing the session series, we also brought you a reworked version of "The Man I Knew," a poignant perspective on love through the lens of substance abuse, replete live guitar riffs provided by Dustin Kiel and the gorgeous harmonies between Dessa and her vocal partner Aby Wolf.

When I stumbled into the Biltmore, I was no where near 100%, and I was very worried about not having a Kleenex to contain my snot drip, but this was the FIRST time the entire 7 member Doomtree crew was touring together. It was my chance to get more than one member together, talking about what they do.
I found Dessa asleep in a booth in the club, sick herself. After I woke her up, she found Lazerbeak and we sniffled and snorted through this interview.
For those who don’t know, Doomtree are a unique entity in hip hop, a collective of members who collaborate and support each other thru their artistic endeavors.
Even though everyone is sick, Dessa and Lazerbeak do not disappoint. Dessa talks about getting asked to join Doomtree and Lazerbeak reveals his dreams about meeting Jay-Z.
