Regional rivals talk Turkey and Greece as relations improve

Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan welcomed his Greek counterpart Antonis Samaras to Istanbul to attend joint ministerial meetings. Both leaders signed a raft of deals relating to health, tourism and migration. Athens and Ankara remain at odds over divided Cyprus, Aegean Sea exploration and illegal immigration. Greek Prime Minister Antonis Samaras said relations were heading in the right direction: "There are issues where we have our differences and the differences are important, but with the decisions we take, like today, we are trying to create a relationship of mutual respect and adopt a new way of relating to one another." Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayipp Erdogan pointed to greater cooperation in the battle against terrorism. "In terms of fighting against it, terrorism is everyone's problem, our common issue, therefore our ministries will be in contact more often. From this point the relations between our interior and foreign ministers, police and security forces will be taken further and take steps towards preventing terrorism, " he said. English/Nat Greek and Cypriot leaders meeting in Athens on Friday held firm to their position that Cyprus had every right to buy weapons systems, including controversial Russian anti-aircraft missiles. Turkey has threatened to send troops to northern Cyprus, if the weapons are deployed. The U-S envoy in the region is trying to broker a compromise between the two sides. The U-S State Department has made it clear that it opposes the deployment of the weapons while the American envoy in the region tries to work out a solution to the tensions between the Greek Cypriot and Turkish sides. SOUNDBITE: (English) "I think that Mr.Cavanaugh, in his conversations with President Clerides and other Cypriot officials, made clear that we believe this is a mistake and that we believe the system should not be deployed. But that is a decision for the government of Cyprus. They are going to have to take that decision. But that's our position." SUPER CAPTION: Nicholas Burns, U-S State Department Spokesperson Both the Greek and Greek-Cypriot leaders said they would examine a proposal made by the United States to end overflights of Cypriot territory by Greek and Turkish jet fighters. U-S State Department official Carey Cavanaugh made the proposal earlier this week. President Clerides said Cyprus would consider making such a decision if fruitful talks began with the Turkish Cypriot side to resolve the 22-year-old division of the eastern Mediterranean island. SOUNDBITE: (English) "Now, he has finished his discussions in Ankara. They were useful discussions with the Turkish leadership. He is overnighting in Istanbul on his way to meet with the European Union in Brussels on Monday. He is confident -- Mr. Cavanaugh is confident that an agreement on a ban on overflights of Greek and Turkish military aircraft over Cyprus is being taken seriously." English/Nat U-S envoy to Cyprus Richard Holbrooke left the island on Tuesday after inconclusive talks with the leaders of its divided Turkish and Greek communities. It is Holbrooke's first visit since U-S President Bill Clinton named him his special envoy to Cyprus earlier this year to look at ways of solving a long-running dispute splitting the island. At a press conference Holbrooke admitted previous American administrations had behaved "shamefully." Greek Cypriot President Glafcos Clerides and Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash met the U-S envoy at the Ledra Palace hotel, now a U-N barracks, in the buffer zone that splits the capital - Nicosia. The visit is Holbrooke's first since U-S President Bill Clinton named him his special envoy to Cyprus last summer. Cyprus has been unofficially partitioned since Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third in 1974, following an abortive coup by Greek Cypriot supporters of a union with Greece. A breakaway Turkish Cypriot state proclaimed in the north is recognised only by Turkey, which maintains 35-thousand troops there. Richard Holbrooke had separate preliminary discussions with the two leaders on Monday and said he did not expect a breakthrough during his talks. And he was proved right. SOUNDBITE: (English) "We did not expect any results today, that would be substantive - this was not a negotiation. We are not here to involve ourselves in a domestic political election in the Republic of Cyprus - we are here to discuss, with the leaders of the two communities, issues that have long divided this troubled land and I leave with a very much improved understanding of the views of the two leaders." SUPER CAPTION: Richard Holbrooke, U-S envoy to Cyprus Holbrooke also said that the United States "bore a certain responsibility" for the developments linked with Cyprus. He was referring to United States support for the military junta that ruled Greece during that period and which was given the green light to stage the coup that sparked the Turkish invasion of Cyprus in 1974. SOUNDBITE: "The history of this area is complicated, and by the way, the American history in this area is not entirely clean. There are some things that previous American administrations did in this area, particularly between the mid 1960s and 1974 which I think were shameful and must be... I don't need to go into details because then I begin fighting history. There are certain things that happened that the United States should not have done." SUPER CAPTION: Richard Holbrooke, U-S envoy to Cyprus Following the four-and-a-half hour meeting with Denktash and Clerides, Holbrooke said he was going to make a previously unscheduled visit to Ankara to confer with the Turkish government, for the second time in three weeks. He's also going to try to see or telephone the Greek Foreign Minister Theodoros Pangalos saying that long standing differences between Greece and Turkey "cannot be dealt with unless Cyprus is dealt with." He called Cyprus the "core issue" and said it was why the United States was involved in trying to sort it out. The two NATO allies have repeatedly come to the brink of war as a result of the Cyprus problem and disputes over Aegean islands. TURKEY: GREECE TO PRESS FOR TURKISH MEMBERSHIP OF E-U

Natural Sound Greece said on Thursday that it will help press for Turkey's membership in the European Union - a turnaround for Athens, which had earlier blocked Turkish efforts. The Aegean neighbours, which have come to the brink of war three times during the past 25 years, have been steadily improving relations since they rushed aid to each other following devastating earthquakes last summer. At a news conference with Greek Foreign Minister George Papandreou, Turkish Foreign Minister Ismail Cem said Greece will advise Turkey on the legal and administrative steps that Turkey must take to win membership. It was the first official visit by a Greek foreign minister to Turkey in 37 years. Last month, Greece lifted its long-standing objections to Turkey's candidacy for E-U membership. In return, Turkey agreed that the divided island of Cyprus could eventually join the E-U, and also agreed to possible international arbitration of some territorial disputes if the two sides fail to solve them by 2004. The two nations also signed a series of agreements on Wednesday in Ankara, designed to build confidence between the two sides before they tackle more contentious issues. The pacts included cooperation in fighting terrorism and organized crime and deals on tourism, the environment and the protection of investments. Cem also proposed setting up a working group to discuss "military goodwill measures," including reducing the size and extent of military exercises in the Aegean Sea. But Papandreou said he needed to discuss the offer with the Greek defence ministry. But despite disagreement in some areas, the two Foreign ministers agreed on most things and praised the outcome of the meeting. In addition, it was estimated that there were 378,700 reserve personnel and 152,200 paramilitary personnel (Turkish Gendarmerie and Turkish Coast Guard), giving a combined active and reserve strength of around 1,041,900 personnel. In 2010, the defence budget amounted to 26 billion liras. The Law on the Court of Accounts was supposed to initiate external ex-post audits of armed forces' expenditure and pave the way for audits of extra budgetary resources earmarked for the defence sector, including the Defence Industry Support Fund. However, the Ministry of Defense has not provided the necessary information, so the armed forces expenditure is not being properly checked. In 1998, Turkey announced a programme of modernisation worth US$160 billion over a twenty-year period in various projects including tanks, fighter jets, helicopters, submarines, warships and assault rifles. Turkey is a Level 3 contributor to the Joint Strike Fighter (JSF) programme. The final goal of Turkey is to produce new-generation indigenous military equipment and to become increasingly self-sufficient in terms of military technologies. Havelsan of Turkey and Boeing of the United States are in the process of developing a next-generation, high-altitude ballistic missile defence shield. Turkey has chosen the Chinese defense firm CPMIEC to co-produce a $4 billion long-range air and missile system. The closest city is Kalambaka at just 5 km where you can find some hotels but the prices are pretty high , I suggest you to get accomodation in Larissa(100km away) or in Thessaloniki(250km away) , Meteora is a 1 day destination because if you follow to main road you can visit all monasteries in just few hours. You can visit here also a cave. The Meteora means , 'middle of the sky','suspended in air'or 'in the heavens above' etymologically related with "Meteorite" is one of the largest and most important complexes of Eastern Orthodox monasteries in Greece,second only to Mount Athos. The six monasteries are built on natural sandstone rock pillars,on the plane of Thessaly near the Pindus mountains in central Greece You have 2 ways to get at Meteora , first is From Thessaloniki but you have to drive 250km and the second is from larissa and you have to drive just 100km or you can take a bus from a travel agency. About accommodation tell u that it is pretty bad and expensive , people usually come here to stay 1 night or maxim 2 because following the main road you can visit all monasteries in just 1 day Meteora is a place where you can find 6 monasteries 4 inhibited by man and 2 inhinited by women. As you can see to get here is not easy so take care. And finnaly when you get to the monastery you have to pay a tax to visit it In the 14th during the Ottoman invasion the monks decided to build new monasteries right on the pick, the only safe place in the period of time Here were 24 active monestries Kalambaka is the closest city situated at just 5km People started to live here thousands of years ago but in 9 century a group of monks move up to this nice place. Meteora is a place where natural and man made wonders are linked makeing this place unique. The Holy Monastery of Grand Meteoron is the largest of the monasteries located at Meteora. It was elected in the mid-14th century and the building serves as the main museum for tourists The holy monastery of Varlaam is the second largest monastery in the Meteora complex.It was built in 1541 and it is dedicated to all Saints. The holy monastery of St.Stehen is a small church built in the 16th century.This monastery rests on the plain rather than on a cliff. it was damaged by the Nazis during WW2 who believed it was harbouring insurgents and was abandoned.Nuns took it over and Reconstructed it. Why Greece And Turkey Are Fighting Over Cyprus? | International Breaking News Since 1974 Cyprus has been divided in two: one part is ethnically Greek, while the other is Turkish. However, there are signs that the two sides may reunite soon. So why is Cyprus divided? On April 26, voters in the northern portion of Cyprus that is under Turkish control elected their new president. Mustafa Akinci defeated incumbent president Dervis Eroglu in a runoff election by 60 percent, according to BBC News. It could be a major turning point for Cyprus, a country long divided between the Turkish-controlled north and the southern portion of the country allied with Greece. Mr. Akinci, 67, ran as an independent and his campaign emphasized he would work with Cypriot President Nicos Anastasiades to find a new, sustainable peace deal to unite the country. As discussed on this episode, the island nation is still divided after a 1974 Turkish invasion that was prompted by a brief Greek-led coup to form a union with Greece. The Turkish-controlled region formally declared itself the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. However, the international community by and large does not recognize this distinction (with the notable exception of Turkey). While the leaders of regional actors Greece, Egypt and Greek Cyprus, which have been at odds with Turkey, met in nicosia last week for a trilateral meeting to boost security, energy and economic relations, Turkey is increasingly isolating itself by adding the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (KKTC) to the list of regional actors it has offended. The KKTC's new president, Mustafa Akıncı, is expected to arrive in Ankara on Wednesday in his first visit abroad. Immediately after his landslide victory on April 26 -- garnering 60 percent of the vote against incumbent President Derviş Eroğlu, who was supported by the Turkish government -- Akıncı engaged in a verbal argument with President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. Akıncı called for a relationship of equals between Turkey and the KKTC, which is recognized by only Ankara, while EU member Greek Cyprus is recognized as the sole government on the island by the international community. President Erdoğan told Akıncı to watch his language and reminded him that Turkish Cypriots should not forget Turkey is the motherland that has always taken care of its children on the island. In response, Akıncı asked why Erdoğan doesn't want Turkish Cypriots to behave like grownups. Left-wing politician Akıncı is known for his pro-solution stance in the ethnically divided Cyprus, and his landslide victory is an important sign that Turkish authorities should not ignore, particularly at a time when Greek Cyprus is forming a new alliance with the countries that Turkey is at odds with. Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi traveled to Greek Cyprus to meet with Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras and Greek Cypriot leader Nicos Anastasiades last Wednesday. El-Sisi had previously hosted Anastasiades and former Greek Prime Minister Antonis Samaras last November in Cairo, declaring new energy cooperation in the region between the three parties. Analysts closely following Turkey agree that Ankara's faulty foreign policy in the region helps the formation of such new friendships and contributes to Turkey's further isolation. Former Turkish foreign minister and architect of its regional policies Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu's “zero problems with neighbors” concept has long been a source of mockery in international circles as “zero neighbors,” with Turkey increasing its problematic relations in the region by the day. Ankara getting into an ugly verbal argument with newly elected KKTC President Akıncı has added to these troubled relationships with neighbors. During his visit to Greek Cyprus, Tsipras said that Greece would launch consultations with Egypt and Greek Cyprus to establish maritime boundaries in the eastern Mediterranean. Visiting Nicosia's southern area, Tsipras said the maritime boundaries would be defined in areas where the consent of third countries was not required. Maritime zones claimed by countries for commercial research, known as economic exploitation zones (EEZ), are normally governed by the United Nations' Law of the Sea or bilateral agreements between neighboring states that usually settle on an equidistant boundary. Ankara, which is not a signatory to that convention, questions the jurisdiction of Cyprus's internationally recognized Greek Cypriot government in exploring for oil and gas. Greek Cyprus has rebuffed Turkish claims and defined its economic zone in 2004. Since then it has delineated its maritime boundaries with Egypt and Israel, where vast amounts of natural gas have been discovered in the past two years. Turkey and Greece have been at loggerheads for decades over land, air, sea and seabed borders in parts of the Aegean Sea. After talks with el-Sisi and Anastasiades, Tsipras said, "We agreed on further consultations for defining our sea zones wherever that is deemed necessary, and obviously where it does not require an understanding and cooperation with third countries." The three parties have also agreed to step up cooperation on combatting terrorism amid fears over worsening security conditions in the region, including Libya. El-Sisi, Tsipras and Anastasiades agreed to boost defense and security ties and to discuss relevant information to counter terrorist threats. They expressed "grave concern" over a growing terrorist threat in Libya that may destabilize neighboring countries, adding that they support putting in place a counterterrorism strategy that would run in tandem with the ongoing political process.

5th July 2015 was the date of the activity in London, known as the annual 'Rally for Cyprus' to protest the continuing occupation of Cyprus by Turkey - with this video featuring the entirety of the event at Trafalgar Square., including all the speeches. On a beautiful summer morning in July 1974, Cyprus wakes up to the sound of gunfire and war. A thirteen-year-old schoolgirl picks up a pen and records a diary of unfolding events. Beginning with shots fired outside the window as the Presidential Palace is overthrown, following the invasion by Turkey and ending on the day a month later when the American Ambassador was killed, the diary is a simple, up-close view of war from a teenage perspective. To commemorate the 40th anniversary of the coup and invasion, the diary pages were displayed in a small gallery next to the Green Line that still divides the island, reopening old wounds and stirring memories.

Battle Of Lepanto - First Major Defeat For The Ottoman Empire

The Battle of Lepanto took place on 7 October 1571 when a fleet of the Holy League, a coalition of southern European Catholic maritime states, decisively defeated the main fleet of the Ottoman Empire in five hours of fighting on the northern edge of the Gulf of Corinth, off western Greece. The Ottoman forces sailing westwards from their naval station in Lepanto met the Holy League forces, which had come from Messina, Sicily, where they had previously gathered. The victory of the Holy League prevented the Ottoman Empire expanding further along the European side of the Mediterranean. Lepanto was the last major naval battle in the Mediterranean fought entirely between galleys and has been assigned great symbolic importance by Catholic and other historians. Some historians argue that Turkish victory could have led to Western Europe being overrun. The Christian coalition had been promoted by Pope Pius V to rescue the Venetian colony of Famagusta, on the island of Cyprus, which was being besieged by the Turks in early 1571 subsequent to the fall of Nicosia and other Venetian possessions in Cyprus in the course of 1570. The banner for the fleet, blessed by the pope, reached the Kingdom of Naples (then ruled by the King of Spain) on 14 August 1571. There, in the Basilica of Santa Chiara, it was solemnly consigned to John of Austria, who had been named leader of the coalition after long discussions between the allies. The fleet moved to Sicily and leaving Messina reached (after several stops) the port of Viscardo in Cephalonia, where news arrived of the fall of Famagusta and of the torture inflicted by the Turks on the Venetian commander of the fortress, Marco Antonio Bragadin. On 1 August, the Venetians had surrendered after being reassured that they could leave Cyprus freely. However, the Ottoman commander, Lala Kara Mustafa Pasha, who had lost some 52,000 men in the siege[citation needed] (including his son), broke his word, imprisoning the Venetians. On 17 August, Bragadin was flayed alive and his corpse hung on Mustafa's galley together with the heads of the Venetian commanders, Astorre Baglioni, Alvise Martinengo and Gianantonio Querini. Despite bad weather, the Christian ships sailed south and, on 6 October, they reached the port of Sami, Cephalonia (then also called Val d'Alessandria), where they remained for a while. On 7 October, they sailed toward the Gulf of Patras, where they encountered the Ottoman fleet. While neither fleet had immediate
