The Tunisia Campaign (also known as the Battle of Tunisia) was a series of battles that took place in Tunisia during the North African Campaign of the Second World War, between Axis and Allied forces. The Allies consisted of British Imperial Forces, including Polish and Greek contingents, with American and French corps. The battle opened with initial success by the German and Italian forces but the massive supply and numerical superiority of the Allies led to the decisive defeat of the Axis. Over 230,000 German and Italian troops were taken as prisoners of war, including most of the Afrika Korps.
The first two years of the war in North Africa were characterised by chronic supply shortages and transport problems. The North African coast has few natural harbours and the British base at Alexandria on the Nile delta was some 2,100 km (1,300 mi) by road from the main Italian port at Tripoli in Libya. Smaller ports at Benghazi and Tobruk were 1,050 km (650 mi) and 640 km (400 mi) west of Alexandria on the Litoranea Balbo (Via Balbia) running along a narrow corridor along the coast. Control of the central Mediterranean was contested by the British and Italian navies, which were equally matched and exerted a reciprocal constraint supply through Alexandria, Tripoli, Benghazi and Tobruk, although the British could supply Egypt via the long route through the Atlantic around the Cape of Good Hope and by the Indian Ocean into the Red Sea.
Tunisia (Arabic: تونس Tūnis; Berber: ⵜⵓⵏⴻⵙ), officially the Tunisian Republic or the Republic of Tunisia (Arabic: الجمهورية التونسية al-Jumhūrīya at-Tūnisīya; Berber: ⵜⴰⴳⴷⵓⴷⴰ ⵏ ⵜⵓⵏⴻⵙ) is the northernmost country in Africa, covering 165,000 square kilometres (64,000 sq mi). Its northernmost point, Ras ben Sakka, is the northernmost point on the African continent. It is bordered by Algeria to the west, Libya to the southeast, and the Mediterranean Sea to the north and east. As of 2013, its population is estimated at just under 10.8 million. Its name is derived from its capital city, Tunis, which is located on the country's northeast coast.
Geographically, Tunisia contains the eastern end of the Atlas Mountains and the northern reaches of the Sahara desert. Much of the rest of the country's land is fertile soil. Its 1,300 kilometres (810 mi) of coastline includes the African conjunction of the western and eastern parts of the Mediterranean Basin and, by means of the Sicilian Strait and Sardinian Channel, features the African mainland's second and third nearest points to Europe after Gibraltar.
In January 2011, driven to despair by high unemployment, food inflation, corruption, a lack of political freedom and poor living conditions, Tunisians ousted President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali and introduced democracy to their country. As the celebrations of this remarkable achievement began to quieten down, people got ready to enjoy the benefits of liberty - especially those to do with fairness, human rights and equality. And indeed, many of those benefits did follow; even though many Tunisians continue to feel economically marginalised and the country faces security problems, for the most part the repression that was such of feature of the Ben Ali years has gone. Tunisia is widely regarded as one of the few successes of the Arab Spring. But not all Tunisians would agree. Five years on ...
Tunisia is located only a few kilometres away from Sicily, the Roman influence is therefore still very obvious. In 800BC the Punic Tunis was only a small village in a shadow of Carthage. Today, Tunis is a modern city with 1,2 Million inhabitants. Where ever we look the Tunisian flag hoisted everywhere. The five columns of Islam, the state religion of Tunisia, are symbolized by a pentacle . The Muslims believe in God being the only one and Mohammad being his prophet. The teaching of Allah calls the faithful to pray, to fast, to give alms and to make pilgrimage to Mecca.

The town of El Jem, Tunisia contains an abundance of remnants from the Roman Empire. Still only half-exposed above Tunisian sands, El Jem Amphitheater attests to the legacy of ancient Roman rule. The amphitheater's towering colonnades were meant to impress visitors centuries ago, as they impress visitors today. This amphitheater is the third largest of its time, after the Colosseum in Rome and the Capua theatre. In ancient Roman times, the amphitheater was used for public spectacle fights featuring chariot races and gladiator battles. Visitors can walk the amphitheater's expansive 427 meter circumference and tour the varying levels from spe...
Alongside 45 Tunisian and international organizations, including Nobel Peace Prize winning ones, Human Rights Watch has launched a campaign titled “No To Terrorism, Yes To Human Rights”. After several terrorist attacks hit Tunisia in 2015 and 2016, these groups came together to affirm that human rights abuses should not be allowed to taint legitimate counterterrorist operations. In this video, Tunisian international traveler Hossam Hamdi says he was abusively banned from travelling after security services “opened a file” on him as part of counterterrorist efforts. Hamdi was never notified of his travel ban, which prevented him from seeking redress. More about the campaign:

[Documentary] The campaign in Tunisia saw the battles that finally ended the brutal war in the desert. The arrival of the British 1st Army gave the Allies a 6-to-1 numerical advantage in troops and a 15-to-1 superiority in tanks, guns, and aircraft. The Allied blockade in the Mediterranean also began to bite, making the beleaguered Germans short of fuel, food, and ammunition. Eventually all German troops in Tunisia surrendered. This documentary features fascinating archive footage from all over the world and includes a review of the political and military situation before the battle, portraits of leaders and commanders, explanation of weapons and tactics, and the story of the battle itself. "The Battles for Tunisia" is a must for military enthusiasts or viewers wishing to learn more on th...

But what were the lives and deaths of gladiators really like? Inside the Bardo Museum there is evidence that when Rome ruled Tunisia, North Africans enjoyed Roman style entertainment. The most popular -- and violent - were the gladiatorial games. In Hollywood depictions, these games take place before a bloodthirsty crowd and it appears the only outcome for the loser is death. But did the losing Gladiator always die? What was a Gladiator's life -- and death -- really like? The answer is a museum secret. Take a tour of Monastir Ribat in Tunisia -- part of the World's Greatest Attractions travel video series by GeoBeats. This structure is a masterpiece representing hundreds of years of battle, prayer, and renovation. The carefully crafted tower of this fortress-turned-historical landmark offers fantastic views of the nearby harbor. Stone pillars and hand-laid walls represent the first line of defense for this bewitching spectacle of North African history. Ominous gateways lead into a stately courtyard where modern filmmakers have retold the stories imbedded in these monumental walls. A spectacle of historical relevance, religious refuge, and ancient wars, the Ribat dominate...

Despite the United Nation's eventual intervention, most of Liberia's young people continue to live in abject poverty, surrounded by filth, drug addiction, and teenage prostitution. The former child soldiers who were forced into war have been left to fend for themselves, the murderous warlords who once led them in cannibalistic rampages have taken up as so-called community leaders, and new militias are lying in wait for the opportunity to reclaim their country from a government they rightly mistrust. Travel video about destination Carthago in Tunisia. Today, Carthage is still the centre of Tunisian political power and the past has made its own remarkable and indelible impression. According to legend, the city of Karth Hadasht was founded by Phoenician settlers in the year 814 B.C. The Romans named it, 'Carthage'. The city soon began to control the Numidic hinterland and established colonies in the entire western area of the Mediterranean. Relatively little remains of the original Phoenician and Punic buildings. So far, archaeologists have only managed to recover Roman treasures. A former monastery, Carthage Museum was built on historic land that also contains numerous fascinating relics from both the Punic and Roman epochs. Close to the museum there is an array of water cisterns, a...
