Armed with a five-decade old recipe, the family roll up their sleeves every day to prepare bowls of refreshing cendol and ais kacang for their customers. If you're up for an ice ball, get one of the ladies to shape and pack one for the road. As there are no chairs and tables here, join the locals and slurp down your order on the sidewalk or you can take your bowls to a coffee shop which is just metres from the stall and enjoy under the cool breeze of a fan.
Made from a combination of coconut milk (santan), a worm-like jelly made from rice flour, shaved ice and palm sugar (gula melaka); cendol is perfect for that hot sweltering day.In Penang, if you ask the locals where to get the best cendol, you would be inevitably be told that the best cendol is sold from a push-cart located on a side lane called Lebuh Keng Kwee, off Penang Road.

Malay dessert from Penang Road Famous Teochew Chendul.
Cendol is a traditional dessert originating from Indonesia which is popular in Southeast Asia such as : Malaysia, Singapore, Brunei, Cambodia, East Timor, Vietnam, Thailand and Burma. Also known as Chendol, lot chong (Thailand), bánh lọt (Vietnam), and mont let saung (Burma). The dessert's basic ingredients are coconut milk, jelly noodles made from rice flour with green food coloring (usually derived from the pandan leaf), shaved ice and palm sugar. Other ingredients such as red beans, glutinous rice, grass jelly, creamed corn, might also be included.
Ais kacang, literally meaning "ice beans", also commonly known as ABC (acronym for Air Batu Campur, meaning "mixed ice"), is a Malaysian dessert which is also common in Singapore (where it is called ice kacang) and Brunei. In Malaysia, almost all variants now contain a large serving of attap chee (palm seed), red beans, sweet corn, grass jelly and cubes of agar agar as common ingredients. Other less-common ingredients include aloe vera, cendol, nata de coco, or ice cream. A final topping of evaporated milk, condensed milk, or coconut milk is drizzled over the mountain of ice along with red rose syrup and sarsi syrup.

Etymology

In Malay, Penang's capital George Town was called and labelled in old maps as Tanjung Penaga (Cape Penaigre), named after the many ballnut trees (also known as Alexandrian laurels, Calophyllum inophyllum) on the coast, but now usually shortened as Tanjung (the Cape).

Penang Road (Malay: Jalan Penang) is a road in George Town, Penang, Malaysia. It runs from near Farquhar Street in the north and its southern end is near Kompleks Tun Abdul Razak at the junction with Macalister Road. Upper Penang Road is a stretch of Penang Road popular among tourists for its bars.

Cendol is a traditional dessert originating from Indonesia which is popular in Southeast Asia such as : Malaysia, Singapore, Brunei, Cambodia, East Timor, Vietnam, Thailand and Burma. Also known as Chendol, lot chong (Thailand), bánh lọt (Vietnam), and mont let saung (Burma). The dessert's basic ingredients are coconut milk, jelly noodles made from rice flour with green food coloring (usually derived from the pandan leaf), shaved ice and palm sugar. Other ingredients such as red beans, glutinous rice, grass jelly, creamed corn, might also be included.
Ais kacang, literally meaning "ice beans", also commonly known as ABC (acronym for Air Batu Campur, meaning "mixed ice"), is a Malaysian dessert which is also common in Singapore (where it is called ice kacang) and Brunei. In Malaysia, almost all variants now contain a large serving of attap chee (palm seed), red beans, sweet corn, grass jelly and cubes of agar agar as common ingredients. Other less-common ingredients include aloe vera, cendol, nata de coco, or ice cream. A final topping of evaporated milk, condensed milk, or coconut milk is drizzled over the mountain of ice along with red rose syrup and sarsi syrup.

All we ever hear about Penang was EATING! Much to our surprise there was a lot more to do in Penang than just eat until you pop. Walking through the quaint streets of Georgetown was an adventure in itself. Penang is definitely a way different vibe compared to Kuala Lumpur. I got way more of a typical South East Asian city vibe out of Penang, and by that I mean, the smells, dirty streets, critters etc.. However, this didn't detract from an excellent experience of the city. The first thing we did was rent a motorbike and get a lay of the land. Penang, Malaysia is an island just off the coast of the West Coast of Malaysia. It’s one of the most famous areas of Malaysia, especially known for its rich and diverse culture and for its food - many people come to Penang just to eat - as did I. Ying and I arrived to Penang from Langkawi, and we stayed in Penang for about a week, doing some work, and eating out way through the city. One day though, we decided to put on our shoes and go to visit as many of the attractions in the center of the city as we could. So this travel videos is an overview of the top things to do in Georgetown, Penang, but also a travel guide as well. Hope you enjoy to!
To begin the day, I started off with a Penang tourist map and located all the places we wanted to go. Since we were staying close to the Georgetown World Heritage Inc., that’s where we first decided to stop. It’s more of an information center, so after just a few minutes we continued on our way to the Chew Jetty, one of the couple of Chinese docks where homes are built over the water. On the way though, we walked through Lebuh Armenian (one of the most famous streets in Penang), past George Town street art, and also briefly stopped at Cheah Kongsi. The Chew Jetty was a nice place to walk around for a few minutes, there wasn’t a lot to do there, but mostly some small souvenir shops and some nice places to take photos.
We continued walking and passed the Queen Victory Lighthouse and then we continued on to Fort Cornwallis, a British built fort, and the only fort in Malaysia - though as they said it wasn’t ever used for battle. I was a little disappointed visiting Fort Cornwallis in Penang because we paid a pretty big entrance fee, but there really wasn’t anything to see inside - I could have seen it all from the outside. Anyway, we continued on walking around Penang, and then circled back past a cathedral. By this time we were getting quite hungry, so we headed into Little India, and then continued to a famous restaurant called Kapitan for tandoori chicken. I didn’t know they were really famous for their rice biryani, but I got a couple pieces of tandoori chicken and naan, it they were both incredible.
In the afternoon, we first stopped at the Goddess of Mercy Temple in Penang, and walked around for a few minutes, and then continued on to Cheong Fatt Tze Mansion, one of Penang’s main attractions and a place I was really looking forward to visiting. Mr. Cheong, an insanely wealthy Chinese business man built the Blue Mansion and it has now been restored and it’s actually open as a hotel, but they also give a couple of guided tours each day. The tour took 45 minutes, and it was beautiful to see. The only thing I wish is that we could have seen a little more of the Blue Mansion, because unfortunately we didn’t get to see much, but mostly listened to the history of the mansion - still it was worth seeing in Penang.
To finish of one day of things to do in Penang, Georgetown, we visited the Kapitan Keling Mosque, and then lastly we went to Khoo Kongsi. For dinner to end this day in Penang, we went to a restaurant to eat dim sum, and a few other Chinese dishes as well.

1) Visit Kek Lok Si Supreme Temple of Bliss
Located just 40 minutes away from the heart of George Town (take buses 201, 203 or 204) in Air Itam, this Buddhist Temple with Chinese influences is well worth exploring and best of all it's absolutely free!
2) Wander around the Clan Jetties Stilt Villages
These last Bastions of traditional Chinese settlement are a fascinating way to explore George Town on foot. Although some Jetties are quite commercial, if you wander on the outskirts you'll find a much more authentic experience.
3) Get up early and eat Dim Sum while drinking Chinese Tea
One of my favorite breakfast options is Dim Sum, and I dragged Audrey out of bed several times while stationed in George Town to enjoy an assortment of different dishes while sipping on copious amounts of tea.
4) Escape the chaos and head to the Botanical Gardens
A leafy lush refuge from hectic George Town, the Botanical Gardens are a great place to seek shade and feel at one with nature. One will almost certainly encounter cheeky monkeys along the way.
5) George Town Waterfront Views
Take the time to gaze and wander along George Town's waterfront views. You will likely spot cruise ships, tankers, ferries, humble row boats and fishermen.
6) Explore Fort Cornwallis
Explore Fort Cornwallis and its plethora of cannonballs built after the founder Francis Light.
7) Roam around Little India
Little India is one of the most colorful and diverse enclaves found in George Town. Grab a roti and curry and listen to the thumping sounds coming out of loud speakers.
8) Wander Around George Town
Few activities are more fascinating than taking a tour on foot around George Town's historic colonial area. You will notice many of the mansions are crumbling before your very eyes.

Penang & Georgetown Malaysia Travel Guide, Little India, Penang Hill, Street Art, Clan Jetties

All we ever hear about Penang was EATING! Much to our surprise there was a lot more to do in Penang than just eat until you pop. Walking through the quaint stre...
All we ever hear about Penang was EATING! Much to our surprise there was a lot more to do in Penang than just eat until you pop. Walking through the quaint streets of Georgetown was an adventure in itself. Penang is definitely a way different vibe compared to Kuala Lumpur. I got way more of a typical South East Asian city vibe out of Penang, and by that I mean, the smells, dirty streets, critters etc.. However, this didn't detract from an excellent experience of the city.
The first thing we did was rent a motorbike and get a lay of the land. Aside from the beaches (which were nowhere near as nice as Langkawi: watch our video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DqjZrlsQzBQ) most action in Penang takes place in and around Georgetown.
Georgetown has famous street art scattered through the city and we spent an entire day on a scavenger hunt to find all these different murals and sculptures. They were really worth spending a day hunting down.
Penang Hill was a great view of the city, but as you can see in the video the tram ride to the top is less than stellar. You are crammed in like sardines and once you get to the top there isn't much going on other than to get an excellent view and pictures of the city of Penang.
Eating.... of course, this is what everyone will tell you to do in Penang and there was no shortage of awesome Indian Food. We ate the same Indian food 5 meals in a row I think. Aside from Indian there are several excellent Dim Sum places to check out. This was one of our first times eating Dim Sum and it was an experience to say the least. Luckily we had a friendly staff member explain how this works. If you don't know, it goes something kind of like this: Sit down at a table in a jam packed open air restaurant and several carts will be wheeled around continuously. As a cart approaches pick your Dim Sum. I lost count of how many different options there were, but our favorites were definitely the shrimp dim sum and the BBQ bun.
