James G. Hirsch

James Gerald Hirsch (October 31, 1922 – May 25, 1987) was an American physician and biomedical researcher who specialized in immunology. Hirsch was also notable for his studies of phagocyte.

Biography

Hirsh was born in St. Louis, Missouri on October 31, 1922.

He received his undergraduate degree from Yale University in 1942. Hirsh graduated from Columbia University's College of Physicians and Surgeons in 1946 with an M.D. degree. He became a member of the Rockefeller Institute's faculty in 1950, becoming a full professor in 1960.

In 1957 his research showed that a prolonged rest is not needed for treatment of the tuberculosis, and resulted in international changes to how tuberculosis patients are treated by allowing local hospitals rather than sanatoriums to take care of the sick.

Hirsch died of cancer at the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center on May 25, 1987.

Hirsch was a member of the National Academy of Sciences, president of the Josiah Macy, Jr. Foundation, dean of graduate studies at the Rockefeller University, chairman of the Medical Sciences section of the National Academy of Sciences and chairman of the Assembly of Life Sciences of the National Research Council. He was also an editor of the Journal of Experimental Medicine.

Emile Hirsch

Emile Davenport Hirsch (born March 13, 1985) is an American film actor, whose works include Into the Wild, Lone Survivor, Milk, Prince Avalanche, The Motel Life, Speed Racer and the A&E networks simulcast miniseries Bonnie & Clyde. He began performing in the late 1990s, and became known as a film actor after roles in Lords of Dogtown, The Emperor's Club, The Girl Next Door, Alpha Dog and the Sean Penn-directed film Into the Wild.

Early life

Hirsch was born in Palms, California. His mother, Margaret Esther (née Davenport), is a visual artist and teacher who designed pop-up books, and his father, David M. Hirsch, is an entrepreneur, manager and producer. He has an older sister, Jenny. He is of German-Jewish, English, and Scots-Irish ancestry. Hirsch was raised in Los Angeles, California, and Santa Fe, New Mexico, where he lived with his mother for several years.

Career

Hirsch appeared in many television roles in the late 1990s and early 2000s, including the award-winning Showtime original movie Wild Iris, opposite Laura Linney and Gena Rowlands. Hirsch made his film debut in 2002, in the Jodie Foster-produced The Dangerous Lives of Altar Boys, and alongside Kevin Kline in the Michael Hoffman picture The Emperor's Club.

Ludwig Hirsch

Ludwig Hirsch (February 28, 1946 – November 24, 2011) was an Austrian singer/songwriter and actor.

Life and Work

Hirsch was born in Sankt Magdalena am Lemberg, Styria, grew up in the Leopoldstadt district of Vienna and first studied graphic arts at the University of Applied Arts Vienna, but switched to the Krauss drama school. He made his stage debut in 1973 at the municipal theater in Regensburg. From 1975 to 1979 he was a member of the ensemble of the Theater in der Josefstadt.

In 1978 Hirsch launched his career as a singer-songwriter and became known for his critical, macabre, and morbid lyrics. He is known as an outstanding representative of Austropop. In some of his works he lends modern interpretations to traditional Viennese songs (for example, the 1834 Hobellied).

In 1991 and 1992 Hirsch appeared before sold-out crowds of 200,000 spectators with his Gottlieb-Tournee, playing his most famous songs worked together into an interesting story. He often tours with guitarist Johann M. Bertl.
