Geoffrey Lamont Holder (August 20, 1930 – October 5, 2014) was a Trinidadian-American actor, choreographer, dancer, painter, singer, and Tony Award-winning stage director and costume designer. He was known for his height (6 ft 6 in), "hearty laugh" and heavily accented bass voice combined with precise diction.
One of four children, of parents who had emigrated to the United States from Trinidad, Holder attended Tranquillity School and then secondary school at Queen's Royal College in Port-of-Spain. At the age of seven, he made his debut in the dance company of his elder brother Boscoe Holder, from whom he had been receiving lessons in dancing and painting.
In 1952, choreographer Agnes de Mille saw Geoffrey Holder dance in St. Thomas. She invited him to New York; he would teach at the Katherine Dunham School of Dance for two years.
Holder was a principal dancer with the Metropolitan Opera Ballet in New York City from 1955 to 1956. He made his Broadway debut in House of Flowers, a musical by Harold Arlen (music and lyrics) and Truman Capote (lyrics and book). He also starred in an all-black production of Waiting for Godot in 1957.
James Earl Jones (born January 17, 1931) is an American actor who in a career spanning more than 60 years has become known as "one of America's most distinguished and versatile" actors and "one of the greatest actors in American history." Since his Broadway debut in 1957, Jones has won many awards, including a Tony Award and Golden Globe Award for his role in The Great White Hope. Jones has won three Emmy Awards, including two in the same year in 1991, and he also earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor in a Leading Role in the film version of The Great White Hope. He is also known for his voice roles as Darth Vader in the Star Wars film series and Mufasa in Disney's The Lion King as well as many other film, stage, and television roles.
As a child Jones had a stutter. In his episode of Biography, he said he overcame the affliction through poetry, public speaking, and acting, although it lasted for several years. A pre-med major in college, he went on to serve in the United States Army during the Korean War before pursuing a career in acting.

"SIMPLY MARVELOUS" - Geoffrey Holder (1930-2014) A rare performance and glimpse into the "private life and philosophy" of this multifaceted celebrity. Immediately recognizable as the 7-Up, "Uncola man", his distinctive bass voice, heavy accent and hearty laugh are legendary. This is a clip from his "nightclub act" that was filmed at Joe's Pub at the Public Theater, New York City. Geoffrey is 6 foot 6 inches tall and shaved his head long before it was cool. Geoffrey won the 1975 Tony Award for Best Director of a Musical, "The Wiz" (1975), the all-African American retelling of "The Wizard of Oz". That same year he was also awarded the Tony for best costume design and was nominated again for the original 1978 Broadway musical "Timbuktu!", which he also directed and choreographed. As a cho...

Legendary Artisan Geoffrey Holder, the Prodigal Prince and Steelband ‘Firsts’ - In 1951, Geoffrey Holder tells of how he and his troupe represented his country of Trinidad and Tobago at the first Caribbean Festival in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Haiti also sent a contingent of two hundred dancers. Haiti’s contingent was wonderful, according to Holder, who was himself very successful with his own dance company. “We opened the show, they [the Haitian contingent] closed the show.” Holder and company garnered rave reviews as well as a contract to perform at Hilton Hotels. Holder subsequently whittled his troupe down from twenty to five performers. To remain viable and self-sufficient, he has always vehemently advised artists to hone additional skill sets. In line with this mindset, Holder ensur...
Actor, Artist, Choreographer, Dancer, and Director gave a question and answer session after the screening of the documentary Geoffery & Carmen. Holder is the Two time Tony Award winning director and costume designer of The Wiz in 1974. He was a major choreographer and dancer during the 1950's and 1960's. He met his wife Carmen de Lavallade while working together in 1954. Both Carmen and Geoffery opened the doors for blacks in dance at a time when we didn't have an opporunity. Holder's filmwork includes "Live and Let Die," "Annie," "Boomerang," and was the spokesman for 7-Up.

Tonight I'm joined by legendary stage performer Carmen de Lavallade. The iconic dancer, who has performed on Broadway, at the Met, and with greats like Alvin Ailey, and of course, her late husband Geoffrey Holder, walks in a proud line. Janet Collins, her cousin, was the first -- and to this day, over sixty years later, the only -- African American full-time Prima Ballerina at the Metropolitan Opera. De Lavallade recently starred in an autobiographical one-woman show, titled "As I Remember It," which chronicled some of her most personal and artistic achievements. A fixture in the dance and theater world for over six decades, de Lavallade helped pave the way for current stars like Misty Copeland and Michaela DePrince. In the clip above, I ask whether she carries any sentiments of resentmen...
