The Earth has been getting hit by asteroids and comets for its whole life. The planets formed from collisions of smaller objects, and even our water may have come largely from comets. Heavy bombardments may have continued until as recently as 4 billion years ago, making it difficult for life to get a foothold at all (the "Late Heavy Bombardment"). There are a lot more small rocks than big ones. So while Earth is constantly being "hit" -- accumulating over 100 tons of matter ever day -- most of this is in the form of dust or tiny sand-grain sized meteors that appear as shooting stars. By comparison, school bus-sized asteroids may hit every thousand years or so, medium sized (say 300 meter) asteroids might be once every 50,000 years, and extinction level events only every billion years. Asteroids are chunks of rock, metal, or both that were once part of smallish planets but were destroyed after collisions. Most orbit the Sun between Mars and Jupiter, but some get near the Earth. The biggest, Ceres is far smaller than the Moon but still big enough to be round and have undergone differentiation. CORRECTION: In the episode we say that 2010 TK7 is 800 km away. However, 2010 TK7 stays on average 150 million kilometers from Earth, but that can vary wildly. Let's recap some recent news - a meteor explodes over Russia, an asteroid barely missed crashing into Earth, and later this year, we will see a comet in the skies that will shine brighter than full Moon. Asteroids, Comets, Meteors - ever wonder the difference among those 3 celestial bodies? Asteroids are usually made from space debris like rock, although some are comprised of nickel or iron. The bodies range in size from a boulder to hundreds of miles in diameter. They orbit around the sun. Some asteroids have struck the Earth in the past, but most don't survive passing through our planet's atmosphere. Comets are essentially space's equivalent to snowballs. Unlike the asteroids that are mostly found in inner part of the solar system, comets begin their life outside the solar system. The cosmic balls consist of frozen gases, dust and rock. Measuring the size of a quaint town, comets' temperatures increase when their orbit brings them close to the sun, resulting in the spewing of gas and dust which creates a glowing head along with a tail that sprawls away from the sun for millions of miles. Meteors are mistakenly referred to as shooting stars, but they are actually comprised of dust grains or rocks. They are generally smaller than the Asteroids. When they get near Earth's gravitational pull, they are sucked into the atmosphere and descend downwards. They usually burn up before hitting the ground, but often let off a flash of light. Sometimes they are big enough to make it to Earth, and are then known as meteorites.

They are believed to be remnants of the humungous cloud of dust and gases that formed the sun and planets over 4 billion years ago. Most of them lie in a single belt between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter. Sometimes changes in gravitational flows and other forces in space cause them to get dislodged from their orbit and move away from the main belt. It is believed that a giant asteroid crashed into earth millions of years ago, causing extreme changes in weather and the extinction of dinosaurs. Scientists believe that the asteroid belt in our solar system could have formed in one of two ways. 1. There existed a planet between Mars and Jupiter that broke up into the belt due to a collision with another celestial body. 2. The rock material in the asteroid belt was unable to fuse into a planet like the others, due to Jupiter’s tremendous gravitational force.
