It’s morphin’ time for Elizabeth Banks in the new Power Rangers movie and we have your first look! There’s a new “Rita Repulsa” coming and this isn’t your little brother’s Power Rangers villain.
Courtesy of
People Magazine we’re getting our first official look at Elizabeth Banks as “Rita Repulsa” in the upcoming Power Rangers reboot and she’s definitely looking like a villain you don’t want to mess with. Draped in a spikey, skin-tight suit, complete with golden talons, facial prosthetics, and a malicious-looking snake-ish rope, this reptilian-green
Rita is definitely a step away from the original’s clunky outfit. While we’re getting a way more “Divatox” meets “
Poison Ivy” vibe than the original Rita, it’s definitely a fun new take on the character and certainly an indication to fans of the original series that the producers are looking to cover new territory; at least aesthetically. The only other glimpse into the film we’ve seen so far has been of the five new
Rangers albeit without their famous super-suits so it’s unclear as to how their outfits might differ from the original as well, but we expect those to remain slightly more traditional as the Rangers’ suits are the most iconic image of the long-running series.
Rita’s new look in the film will no doubt be explained by a back-story at some
point, which
Banks has said will “connect her to the new Rangers.” No word yet on what that connection may be, but if it’s anything like the original, it’ll likely to have to do with the Rangers’ mentor “Zordon”, Rita’s arch nemesis. It’s also possible that this new Rita could have some relation to the
Green Ranger considering the similar color scheme, but who knows? Acknowledging that her look for the character is “more modern and edgy” than the original, Banks says she’s looking forward to doing more than just look creepy. She’s never played a villain on-screen before and tells
People she’s relishing her newfound abilities for “
World domination – and being unpredictable as a character.”
Sounds to us like Banks is being allowed to cut loose on the set with the character, hopefully letting her really ham it up since that’s what the character deserves. If we know anything about alien villains based on popular 90’s kids shows, it’s that they should really play into the absurdity and not take things too seriously and Banks has proven over and over her abilities to play over-the-top characters while maintaining a level of charm and wit. We’re looking forward to seeing how that transfers over to the action side of things, but what do you think? Are you digging Banks’ version of “Rita” and what do you think her connection to the Rangers will be?
