A gas-filled tube, also known as a discharge tube, is an arrangement of electrodes in a gas within an insulating, temperature-resistant envelope. Gas-filled tubes exploit phenomena related to electric discharge in gases, and operate by ionizing the gas with an applied voltage sufficient to cause electrical conduction by the underlying phenomena of the Townsend discharge.
The voltage required to initiate and sustain discharge is dependent on the pressure and composition of the fill gas and geometry of the tube. Although the envelope is typically glass, power tubes often use ceramics, and military tubes often use glass-lined metal. Both hot cathode and cold cathode type devices are encountered.
Hydrogen is used in tubes used for very fast switching, e.g. some thyratrons, dekatrons, and krytrons, where very steep edges are required. The build-up and recovery times of hydrogen are much shorter than in other gases. Hydrogen thyratrons are usually hot-cathode. Hydrogen (and deuterium) can be stored in the tube in the form of a metal hydride, heated with an auxiliary filament; hydrogen by heating such storage element can be used to replenish cleaned-up gas, and even to adjust the pressure as needed for a thyratron operation at a given voltage.

When the pressure of the gas inside the discharge tube is reduced by working the vacuum pump, to about 110 mm of Hg, no discharge occurs through the tube. At a pressure of about 100 mm of Hg, the discharge of electricity through the gas begins and irregular streaks of light appear, accompanied by a crackling sound. As the pressure is reduced to the order of 10 mm of Hg, the irregular streaks broaden out into a luminous column extending from the anode, almost upto the cathode. This column is known as the positive column. With further reduction in pressure to around 0.01 mm of Hg, the positive column disappears and Crooke’s dark space fills the whole tube. At this stage, the walls of the glass tube fluoresce with green colour. This greenish glow in the final stage of the gaseous discharge...

Three glass tubes, each 24 inches long and 1.5 inches in diameter, are exhausted to high vacuum and backfilled with gases. The tube at the top contains pure krypton at 200 torr; the tube in the middle contains krypton at 100 torr plus a crystal of iodine (vapor pressure ~0.3 torr); and the tube at the bottom contains pure xenon at about 30 torr. Gases are delivered at UHP purity through a metal-sealed system and pressure is measured with a 1000-torr Baratron manometer. The different colors and structures of the discharges are discussed as they relate to fill gas composition--particularly the improvement caused by the addition of iodine to krypton.
