It's not quite the same upgrade as going from 100 megabit to 1 gigabit, but it is similar in a lot of ways. In this video we want to indtroduce you to 10 gigabit ethernet and introduce some hardware from Intel, Marvell and Netgear that operates at 10 gigabit. We'll also take a quick look at SFP+/fiberoptic 10 gigabit ethernet, and the ASRock X99 WS motherboard that has built-in Intel 10 gigabit adapters. 10 gig ethernet is so fast that most computers just can't push 10 gigabits of traffic through a single queue; today it is like it was when gigabit ethernet first came out. We have a lot of content coming up for 10 gigabit and this video is a good introduction if you are familiar with networking concepts and have at least a basic understanding of how networks are put together. We mention a lot of topics that will be making an appearance in the future, and we will talk about why 10 gigabit "works differently" right now than gigabit ethernet. Tech 101: What is an Ethernet Cable? - as part of the expert series by GeoBeats. Hi, I am Mindy Liepitz and I am The Computer Lady from Grand Junction, Colorado. This is an ethernet cable. This is a very short ethernet cable. This is a very long ethernet cable. They come in an assortment of colors. They are generally six feet long and this is the cable that connects your computer to your high speed internet. I say that it looks alot like a pregnant phone cord. It has the same shape and same plug as a phone cable would, only a phone cable has four wires and this has eight, so it is much wider. They are called CAT 5 cables or ethernet cables and sometimes the words CAT 5 will be printed on the cable itself. The ethernet cable plugs in on the back generally of a desktop computer and sometimes it is part of the original computer pieces or the motherboard, what we call onboard and it would be this hole right here and you would just take the cable and plug it in. Sometimes there is a light that flashes when it is connected. Sometimes the ethernet connection is added later to the computer in the form of a card that is plugged into the computer. And then it would be more toward the bottom here. This computer actually has two ethernet connections, an onboard connection and an added on connection. Here again, all you would do is unplug the cord and plug it in like that. You push down on the little release to pull them out. Like that. If you have a laptop and you want to attach an ethernet cable to make it a wired internet connection, you would look on the side generally either left or right side of the laptop and again you see it here. And if you just remember that it is a pregnant phone connection. It looks just like a phone connection only much wider.

Let's say I have many, many computers in my house, or in my office, and I connected all of the ports that I have here. Most routers will have four ports on them, so I have connected three computers and a printer. But suddenly I wanted to buy another computer. So, that's what the switch is for. A switch is basically kind of like a network surge protector. Just think about it this way. You plug in one output to your router, and the other ones will just split up that connection, to give you more hookups. This is called a four port switch, which will mean it will have actually five ports - one which will be uplink. It will send the signal back to the router - and the other four will split it up for four computers. Switches come in many sizes. They can come in four port size A ports, 16, 32, even 64. And of course, they have much larger more industrial switches for big industrial settings. And they also have different speeds to them. And when I say speed, I'm basically talking about the speed of the port. The basic speed is 10 megabit per second; then you have 100 megabit, which is pretty much the standard nowadays. And today, we also have faster switches which are gigabits. So you have 1,000 megabits per second. If you buy a gigabit switch, it's also wise to make sure your computer has a gigabit Ethernet port, and also that your router has a gigabit Ethernet port, otherwise you're not really thinking that that would do it. So, if you have way to many computers for your router to handle, an Ethernet switch is definitely what you need.
