IODA and Copyright on YouTube

In 2010, the Finders Keepers markets asked us (Eli Murray, Lukasz Karluk and myself) to create a promotional video of sorts for their talk at Creative Sydney. We used a segment of Eli's music (otherwise known as Gentleforce) for the clip and I posted it to YouTube. A few days ago, YouTube sent me a copyright claim on the video, which came from some acronymic non-identity called IODA.
That was all I saw: "IODA has made a copyright claim on your video". Sounded like some joker was messing with the copyright claim system on YouTube, so I responded on the automated system by ticking a box that said something along the lines of: "no, IODA is mistaken. There shouldn't be any copyright claim on this video." I thought that would be the end of it. Instead, I got a prompt reply from YouTube:
IODA has reviewed your dispute and reinstated its copyright claim on your video, "The Finders Keepers -- Making It Happen". For more information, please visit your Copyright Notices page

That's it. No further correspondance will be entered into. Frankly it pissed me off, so I tried to find out who this IODA is... Turns out they are a digital distribution company, with a rich history of stamping their claim on YouTube videos.
Gentleforce is indeed on the IODA catalogue, though I'm not alone in thinking they're overstating their rights by placing copyright claims on videos like this. Tom Ellard speaks of his experience in detail and has now left YouTube in favor of Vimeo because of his own similar run-in with IODA -- I'll be doing the same. The Sony-owned-IODA ("independent" my arse) is desperately trying to get their slice of the YouTube advertising pie, and whilst our little video certainly isn't getting the level of views that Ellard's would be, Sony can look elsewhere to make easy money.
Cashing in on the work of others has been the major record label model for decades -- and instead of evolving, they're hanging onto that, kicking and screaming. Maybe it would be best if they were put out of our misery and artists finally took back copyright control. Up yours, Sony. And YouTube for bending to this kind of behaviour -- I'm out.

Welcome to the ultimate day of the IODA Optimist Asian Championship. Here in Al Jazaeer beach suspense is in the air as all the sailors prepare for the last day of the championship. Today the wind is lighter than previous days so a steady performance in all conditions will be the key for taking the title.
As the final results will be shaped today the sailors cross check & tune their sails before the starting signal just to be sure that they will have the best possible speed. After some last minute advice from the coaches it was time to go.
With lighter conditions on the race area the sailors had to find the right wind shift. They also had to seek out the areas with more pressure - not an easy task as the high level of the competition and the number of the boats didn't leave much space. The experts of this tactical game turned out to be Malaysia, their sailors nailing the top three places in the first race of gold fleet.
Tension was high in the fight for the medals. A cat and mouse game began between Rasima Yasar from Turkey and Junrui Lu from Singapore with the overall difference just one point after the first race. Wang Jie from China and Suthon Yampinid were less consistent, with Phua Shynee attacking from behind. Everything was building up to a grand finale with the top places to be decided in the last race of the championship.
The dramatic last act put a lot of pressure on the young sailors. Rasima Yasar finished out the top 10 places but he claimed overall regatta victory because Junrui Lu finished behind him. As Yasar is from Turkey and outside Asia, Lu was more than happy to be crowned Asian Boy Champion for 2014. Wang Jie from China gave it everything, climbing to second place in the last race, but after a protest, he was disqualified, so he dropped down the leaderboard. After this dramatic decision, Suthon Yampinid from Thailand won second place in the Asia Championship and the 3rd overall in the boy's fleet.
Phua Shynee, the youngster from Singapore, claimed the title of Asian Girl Champion and first overall in he girl's fleet, showing a lot of promise for the future. China, after winning the team racing Asian championship, saw Huijia Yu second with Xiaming Qiu third in Asia and overall.
The IODA Optimist Asian Championship 2014 wrapped up with a typically impressive and glamorous medal ceremony, showcasing a real flavour of Bahrain's hospitality. The winners were warmly applauded, and all the sailors went out of their way to say how much they enjoyed this well run event. We hope to see you next year.

Ricardo Villalobos (born 1970) is a Chilean-German electronic music producer and DJ. He is well known for his work in the minimal techno and microhouse genres, and is one of the most significant figures in today's minimal techno scene.
Villalobos was born in Santiago, Chile in 1970. In 1973 he moved to Germany with his family to escape the dictatorship of Augusto Pinochet, who had seized power that year.
When Ricardo was around 10 or 11 he started to play conga and bongos. Though he loved music, he could never see himself as a musician.[citation needed] He began making electronic music in the late 80s. From a very young age he has been a big fan of Depeche Mode, even following their tours around Europe to listen to them.
Villalobos began to play his music at parties while he was studying at university, but this was only for his own enjoyment. He started a label, Placid Flavour, in 1993 but this was unsuccessful. His first record was released on the German Playhouse label in 1994 and he began DJing as a professional in 1998.

Welcome to the ultimate day of the IODA Optimist Asian Championship. Here in Al Jazaeer beach suspense is in the air as all the sailors prepare for the last day of the championship. Today the wind is lighter than previous days so a steady performance in all conditions will be the key for taking the title. As the final results will be shaped today the sailors cross check & tune their sails before the starting signal just to be sure that they will have the best possible speed. After some last minute advice from the coaches it was time to go. With lighter conditions on the race area the sailors had to find the right wind shift. They also had to seek out the areas with more pressure - not an easy task as the high level of the competition and the number of the boats didn't leave much space. T... -

In 2010, the Finders Keepers markets asked us (Eli Murray, Lukasz Karluk and myself) to create a promotional video of sorts for their talk at Creative Sydney. We used a segment of Eli's music (otherwise known as Gentleforce) for the clip and I posted it to YouTube. A few days ago, YouTube sent me a copyright claim on the video, which came from some acronymic non-identity called IODA.
That was all I saw: "IODA has made a copyright claim on your video". Sounded like some joker was messing with the copyright claim system on YouTube, so I responded on the automated system by ticking a box that said something along the lines of: "no, IODA is mistaken. There shouldn't be any copyright claim on this video." I thought that would be the end of it. Instead, I got a prompt reply from YouTube:
IODA has reviewed your dispute and reinstated its copyright claim on your video, "The Finders Keepers -- Making It Happen". For more information, please visit your Copyright Notices page

That's it. No further correspondance will be entered into. Frankly it pissed me off, so I tried to find out who this IODA is... Turns out they are a digital distribution company, with a rich history of stamping their claim on YouTube videos.
Gentleforce is indeed on the IODA catalogue, though I'm not alone in thinking they're overstating their rights by placing copyright claims on videos like this. Tom Ellard speaks of his experience in detail and has now left YouTube in favor of Vimeo because of his own similar run-in with IODA -- I'll be doing the same. The Sony-owned-IODA ("independent" my arse) is desperately trying to get their slice of the YouTube advertising pie, and whilst our little video certainly isn't getting the level of views that Ellard's would be, Sony can look elsewhere to make easy money.
Cashing in on the work of others has been the major record label model for decades -- and instead of evolving, they're hanging onto that, kicking and screaming. Maybe it would be best if they were put out of our misery and artists finally took back copyright control. Up yours, Sony. And YouTube for bending to this kind of behaviour -- I'm out.

Welcome to the ultimate day of the IODA Optimist Asian Championship. Here in Al Jazaeer beach suspense is in the air as all the sailors prepare for the last day of the championship. Today the wind is lighter than previous days so a steady performance in all conditions will be the key for taking the title.
As the final results will be shaped today the sailors cross check & tune their sails before the starting signal just to be sure that they will have the best possible speed. After some last minute advice from the coaches it was time to go.
With lighter conditions on the race area the sailors had to find the right wind shift. They also had to seek out the areas with more pressure - not an easy task as the high level of the competition and the number of the boats didn't leave much space. The experts of this tactical game turned out to be Malaysia, their sailors nailing the top three places in the first race of gold fleet.
Tension was high in the fight for the medals. A cat and mouse game began between Rasima Yasar from Turkey and Junrui Lu from Singapore with the overall difference just one point after the first race. Wang Jie from China and Suthon Yampinid were less consistent, with Phua Shynee attacking from behind. Everything was building up to a grand finale with the top places to be decided in the last race of the championship.
The dramatic last act put a lot of pressure on the young sailors. Rasima Yasar finished out the top 10 places but he claimed overall regatta victory because Junrui Lu finished behind him. As Yasar is from Turkey and outside Asia, Lu was more than happy to be crowned Asian Boy Champion for 2014. Wang Jie from China gave it everything, climbing to second place in the last race, but after a protest, he was disqualified, so he dropped down the leaderboard. After this dramatic decision, Suthon Yampinid from Thailand won second place in the Asia Championship and the 3rd overall in the boy's fleet.
Phua Shynee, the youngster from Singapore, claimed the title of Asian Girl Champion and first overall in he girl's fleet, showing a lot of promise for the future. China, after winning the team racing Asian championship, saw Huijia Yu second with Xiaming Qiu third in Asia and overall.
The IODA Optimist Asian Championship 2014 wrapped up with a typically impressive and glamorous medal ceremony, showcasing a real flavour of Bahrain's hospitality. The winners were warmly applauded, and all the sailors went out of their way to say how much they enjoyed this well run event. We hope to see you next year.
