James Nicholls
James Henry Nicholls (24 September 1908 – 20 August 1984) was an English football goalkeeper who played in the Football League for Blackpool, Manchester City, Brentford and Port Vale.
Playing career
Early years
A goalkeeper, in his early career Nicholls played for Darlaston, Cradley Heath, Sunbeam Motor Works, Bloxwich Strollers, Bilston United, Blackpool and Manchester City.
Brentford
Nicholls signed for Second Division side Brentford in the summer of 1934. Unable to oust James Mathieson from the side, Nicholls failed to make a first team appearance during his first two seasons at Griffin Park and instead played for the reserves, winning the London Challenge Cup with the team in 1935. With the Bees now in the First Division, Nicholls finally made his first team debut in a 1-1 draw with Huddersfield Town on 12 September 1936. He made six further appearances during the 1936–37 season, before returning to the reserves and leaving the club at the end of the campaign.

Horses in warfare
The first use of horses in warfare occurred over 5,000 years ago. The earliest evidence of horses ridden in warfare dates from Eurasia between 4000 and 3000 BC. A Sumerian illustration of warfare from 2500 BC depicts some type of equine pulling wagons. By 1600 BC, improved harness and chariot designs made chariot warfare common throughout the Ancient Near East, and the earliest written training manual for war horses was a guide for training chariot horses written about 1350 BC. As formal cavalry tactics replaced the chariot, so did new training methods, and by 360 BC, the Greek cavalry officer Xenophon had written an extensive treatise on horsemanship. The effectiveness of horses in battle was also revolutionized by improvements in technology, including the invention of the saddle, the stirrup, and later, the horse collar.
Many different types and sizes of horse were used in war, depending on the form of warfare. The type used varied with whether the horse was being ridden or driven, and whether they were being used for reconnaissance, cavalry charges, raiding, communication, or supply. Throughout history, mules and donkeys as well as horses played a crucial role in providing support to armies in the field.

Long a philosophical and theological question, in the 20th century this became the subject of scientific research. Fifty years ago, in 1967, Ian Stevenson, then chair of UVA's Department of Psychiatry, created a research unit—now named the Division of Perceptual Studies—to study what, if anything, of the human personality survives after death. Addiction is a familiar feature of contemporary society. Not only do we have access to numerous substances linked to dependency, but we apply the term 'addiction' to an increasing array of other activities: shopping, eating, gambling and so forth. However, there remains deep uncertainty as to what addiction is, how it develops and how it should be tackled. Most strikingly, the question of whether addiction is a kind of disease remains unresolved -- something which has significant implications for how addiction and addicts are viewed.
Dr Nicholls explores some of the ways in which thinking about addiction developed from the eighteenth to the early twentieth centuries. He discusses how doctors, clerics and social commentators first began to work through the problem, moving uneasily between moral condemnation and quasi-clinical diagnosis. In following the evolution of these ideas, he considers in particular how changing approaches to addiction (which, until the 20th century, most often meant habitual drinking) reflected wider social and cultural developments.

Fifty years ago, in 1967, Ian Stevenson, then chair of UVA's Department of Psychiatry, created a research unit—now named the Division of Perceptual Studies—to study what, if anything, of the human personality survives after death. Dr. Stevenson's own research investigated hundreds of accounts of young children who claimed to recall past lives.
