The Isle of Portland is a limestone tied island, 6 kilometres (4 mi) long by 2.7 kilometres (1.7 mi) wide, in the English Channel. Portland is 8 kilometres (5 mi) south of the resort of Weymouth, forming the southernmost point of the county of Dorset, England. A barrier beach over which runs the A354 road connects it to Chesil Beach and the mainland. Portland and Weymouth together form the borough of Weymouth and Portland. The population of Portland is 12,400.
Portland is a central part of the Jurassic Coast, a World Heritage Site on the Dorset and east Devon coast, important for its geology and landforms. Its name is used for one of the British Sea Areas, and has been exported as the name of North American and Australian towns. Portland stone, famous for its use in British and world architecture, including St Paul's Cathedral and the United Nations Headquarters, continues to be quarried.
Portland Harbour, in between Portland and Weymouth, is one of the largest man-made harbours in the world. The harbour was made by the building of stone breakwaters between 1848 and 1905. From its inception it was a Royal Navy base, and played prominent roles during the First and Second World Wars; ships of the Royal Navy and NATO countries worked up and exercised in its waters until 1995. The harbour is now a civilian port and popular recreation area, and was used for the 2012 Olympic Games.

The Jurassic Coast is a World Heritage Site on the English Channel coast of southern England. It stretches from Orcombe Point near Exmouth in East Devon to Old Harry Rocks near Swanage in East Dorset, a distance of 96 miles (155 kilometres). Chartered in 2001, the Jurassic coast was the second wholly natural World Heritage Site to be designated in the United Kingdom. Its entire length can be walked on the South West Coast Path. The site was featured on the television programme Seven Natural Wonders as one of the wonders of the South West (of the UK), and in a 2005 poll of Radio Times readers, the Jurassic Coast was named as the fifth-greatest natural wonder in Britain.
The Jurassic Coast consists of Triassic, Jurassic and Cretaceous cliffs, spanning the Mesozoic Era, documenting 180 million years of geological history.
The site shows excellent examples of landforms, including the natural arch at Durdle Door, the cove and limestone folding at Lulworth Cove and an island, the Isle of Portland. Chesil Beach is a fine example of both a tombolo (a deposition landform in which an island is attached to the mainland by a narrow piece of land such as a spit or bar) and a storm beach (a beach affected by particularly fierce waves). The site has stretches of both concordant and discordant coastlines. Due to the quality of the varied geology, the site is the subject of international field studies. This area was home to Mary Anning, a palaeontologist who studied the fossils of the coastline around Lyme Regis and discovered the first complete Ichthyosaur fossil at the Spittles.

Renewed threat 2016. **Please refer/copy this to any government or Planning contacts you may have** Some of the world's finest buildings are built of the famous Portland Stone. This has given employment and pride to the Island of Portland over many centuries. But one devastating decision by the British government in the shadow of WW2 now threatens what little remains of the Island's precious environment and historic landscape. The Royal Manor of Portland is a small peninsula projecting into the English Channel. It has a fantastically rich history. It is home to 13000 people very few now involved in quarrying. Portland is at the centre of the UNESCO World Heritage Site; Britain's Jurassic Coast. Please support the campaign to stop this new destruction. [See my YouTube channel for more]
I was gigging with a band in Portland, Dorset, UK last week [13 Sep '15] and I found some time to walk around and do some filming, people doing kite surfing and the general beauty of the place. It was crazy windy and proper hustle to try to operate the camera but worth it. A peaceful and a must see place with a gorgeous scenery. No tripod, just balancing on the side of the balcony and camera on the back of my hand. And as the sun goes down two people & a dog walk into shot ..... enjoy! Olga Blue (https://www.youtube.com/user/4uOlga) gave me permission to add her beautiful piano playing of Time as the sound track (I wish I could play like that !, maybe one day).. Cast : unknown. Location: Isle of Portland, Looking out over Chesil Beach Equipment : Canon 5D with a 300mm lens at max zoom, UV & polarizing filters, rendered using open source software kdenlive (£0) with pan & zoom, gain, saturation & fade in/out effects.

As the second-largest island in the Hawaiian chain, Maui is home to less than 150,000 people. It makes up for its sparse population by drawing more than 2.4 million visitors per year, all of whom are drawn to its sparkling beaches, warm water, and lush tropical habitats. Polynesian and modern American lifestyles blend together in the Valley Isle. Maui’s legendary greenery, sprouting from fertile lava soil, has made it a popular place for hikes and scenic drives. Of course, its fascinating culture and history are also huge draws. Once you’ve arrived on the island, your Maui tour should kick off with the capital city, Wailuku, which is full of museums, pubs, and places to explore. Maui is not a large island, and in theory it’s easy to see all of it—after all, you can drive from one end t...
