Description: The techniques, symbolism and culture surrounding hand-dyed cotton and silk garments known as Indonesian Batik permeate the lives of Indonesians from beginning to end: infants are carried in batik slings decorated with symbols designed to bring the child luck, and the dead are shrouded in funerary batik. Clothes with everyday designs are worn regularly in business and academic settings, while special varieties are incorporated into celebrations of marriage and pregnancy and into puppet theatre and other art forms. The garments even play the central role in certain rituals, such as the ceremonial casting of royal batik into a volcano. Batik is dyed by proud craftspeople who draw designs on fabric using dots and lines of hot wax, which resists vegetable and other dyes and therefore allows the artisan to colour selectively by soaking the cloth in one colour, removing the wax with boiling water and repeating if multiple colours are desired. The wide diversity of patterns reflects a variety of influences, ranging from Arabic calligraphy, European bouquets and Chinese phoenixes to Japanese cherry blossoms and Indian or Persian peacocks. Often handed down within families for generations, the craft of batik is intertwined with the cultural identity of the Indonesian people and, through the symbolic meanings of its colours and designs, expresses their creativity and spirituality.

This is a fun and easy art project for kids and adults! Easy enough to do at home! Batik is a fabric dyeing technique using wax-resist. Instead of using hot wax, I use a product that will keep little fingers safe and create the same result.
The paints WILL stain, so make sure your child is wearing a smock or apron. It might even be a good idea to work on this project outside on a sunny day!
Supplies needed:
- piece of white fabric (could be an old t-shirt)
- wax paper
- 6 plastic cups
- paint brush
- a few acrylic craft paints
- Elmer's blue gel glue
- water
- paper towels
- apron or smock to cover clothes
- plastic tub (or kitchen sink)

Batik (/ˈbætɪk/ or /bəˈtiːk/; Javanese pronunciation: [ˈbateʔ]; Indonesian: [ˈbatɪk]) is a cloth that is traditionally made using a manual wax-resist dyeing technique. Batik or fabrics with the traditional batik patterns are found in (particularly) Indonesia, Malaysia, Japan, China, Azerbaijan, India, Sri Lanka, Egypt, Nigeria, Senegal, and Singapore.
Javanese traditional batik, especially from Yogyakarta and Surakarta, has notable meanings rooted to the Javanese conceptualization of the universe. Traditional colours include indigo, dark brown, and white, which represent the three major Hindu Gods (Brahmā, Vishnu, and Śiva). This is related to the fact that natural dyes are most commonly available in indigo and brown. Certain patterns can only be worn by nobility; traditionally, wider stripes or wavy lines of greater width indicated higher rank. Consequently, during Javanese ceremonies, one could determine the royal lineage of a person by the cloth he or she was wearing.
Other regions of Indonesia have their own unique patterns that normally take themes from everyday lives, incorporating patterns such as flowers, nature, animals, folklore or people. The colours of pesisir batik, from the coastal cities of northern Java, is especially vibrant, and it absorbs influence from the Javanese, Arab, Chinese and Dutch cultures. In the colonial times pesisir batik was a favourite of the Peranakan Chinese, Dutch and Eurasians.[citation needed]

Easy Batik Tutorial
This is a fun and easy art project for kids and adults! Easy enough to do at home! Batik is a fabric dyeing technique using wax-resist. Instead of using hot wax, I use a product that will keep little fingers safe and create the same result. The paints WILL stain, so make sure your child is wearing a smock or apron. It might even be a good idea to work on this project outside on a sunny day! Supplies needed: - piece of white fabric (could be an old t-shirt) - wax paper - 6 plastic cups - paint brush - a few acrylic craft paints - Elmer's blue gel glue - water - paper towels - apron or smock to cover clothes - plastic tub (or kitchen sink) If you or your child make this project, I would love for you to tag me on Instagram @littlemissveg, so I can see his/her work! -

This is a fun and easy art project for kids and adults! Easy enough to do at home! Batik is a fabric dyeing technique using wax-resist. Instead of using hot wax, I use a product that will keep little fingers safe and create the same result.
The paints WILL stain, so make sure your child is wearing a smock or apron. It might even be a good idea to work on this project outside on a sunny day!
Supplies needed:
- piece of white fabric (could be an old t-shirt)
- wax paper

- Elmer's blue gel glue
