Like Vaughan Williams' Tallis Fantasia, this is a pastoral work of transcendent beauty and power. The Lark Ascending was inspired by George Meredith's 122-line poem of the same name about the skylark (Alauda arvensis). He included this portion of Meredith's poem on the flyleaf of the published work:
He rises and begins to round,
He drops the silver chain of sound,
Of many links without a break,
In chirrup, whistle, slur and shake.
For singing till his heaven fills,
'Tis love of earth that he instils,
And ever winging up and up,
Our valley is his golden cup
And he the wine which overflows
to lift us with him as he goes.
Till lost on his aerial rings
In light, and then the fancy sings.
This work is of course covered well on YouTube and everywhere else for that matter. I make no apology for revisiting this music because I have just returned home to England after a lengthy absence, and England's landscapes here in late May are easily the equal of any other of our planet's outstanding places, both natural and man-made.
I took these photos during the past few weeks in the Peak District, Derbyshire, England. The opening skylark pic is courtesy of the Cambridgeshire Bird Club © Peter Beesley. I hope Peter will not mind my including his lovely photograph here.
Troublingly, this iconic bird is now on the danger list, of which more below. However, it was encouraging to witness only a few weeks ago no less than three of these beautiful larks singing their lofty song above the late Neolithic henge at Arbor Low (5:11).
From the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB):
Skylark populations are declining in almost all countries of northern and western Europe. In the UK, the population halved during the 1990s, and is still declining. In the preferred habitat of farmland, skylarks declined by 75% between 1972 and 1996.
The main cause of this decline is considered to be the widespread switch from spring to autumn-sown cereals, which has resulted in a dramatic reduction in the number of chicks raised each year.

The Lark Ascending by Ralph Vaughan Williams, along with pictures of the English countryside, a scenery which proved to be a great inspiration to Vaughan Williams his entire life and career. It was originally composed in 1914 for violin and piano and had its first public performance in 1920: in the same year the composer re-scored it for solo violin and orchestra, which premiered in 1921, and is the more frequently performed version. It is one of the most popular pieces in the Classical repertoire among British listeners, as well as New Yorkers and classical music fans in New Zealand.

Larks are passerine birds of the family Alaudidae. All species occur in the Old World, and in northern and eastern Australia; only one, the Horned Lark, has spread to North America. Habitats vary widely, but many species live in dry regions.
Larks are small- to medium-sized birds, 12 to 24 cm (5 to 8 inches) in length and 15 to 75 grams (0.5 to 2.6 ounces) in weight (Kikkawa 2003).
They have more elaborate calls than most birds, and often extravagant songs given in display flight (Kikkawa 2003). These melodious sounds (to human ears), combined with a willingness to expand into anthropogenic habitats — as long as these are not too intensively managed — have ensured larks a prominent place in literature and music, especially the Eurasian Skylark in northern Europe and the Crested Lark and Calandra Lark in southern Europe.
With these song flights, males defend their breeding territories and attract mates. Most species build nests on the ground, usually cups of dead grass, but in some species more complicated and partly domed. A few desert species nest very low in bushes, perhaps so circulating air can cool the nest. Larks' eggs are usually speckled, and clutch sizes range from 2 (especially in species of the driest deserts) to 6 (in species of temperate regions). Larks incubate for 11 to 16 days (Kikkawa 2003).

Evgeny Igorevitch Kissin (Russian: Евге́ний И́горевич Ки́син Yevgeniy Igorevich Kisin; born 10 October 1971) is a Russian classical pianist. He first came to international fame as a child prodigy. He has been a British citizen since 2002. He is especially known for his interpretations of the works of the Romantic repertoire, particularly Frédéric Chopin, Rachmaninoff and Franz Liszt.
Kissin was born in Moscow to a Russian Jewish family. Recognized as a child prodigy, at age six, he began piano studies at the esteemed Gnessin School of Music for Gifted Children. At the school, he became a student of Anna Kantor, who remained Kissin's only piano teacher.

Asher Paul Roth (born August 11, 1985) is an American rapper from Morrisville, Pennsylvania. Roth is signed to Schoolboy Records, SRC, and Def Jam.
Asher Roth was born and raised in Morrisville, Pennsylvania, a small town about 20 miles northeast of Philadelphia. His mother, Elizabeth (née McConnell), is a yoga instructor, and his father, David Roth, is the executive director of a design firm. His mother has Scottish ancestry and his paternal grandfather was Jewish. Roth does not consider himself Jewish, although his name often leads people to believe he is. He attended Pennsbury High School. Growing up, Roth was exposed to little hip hop in his family, with his parents preferring "The Temptations, Earth, Wind & Fire ... Bruce Springsteen and Dire Straits." According to Roth:

Sir Andrew Davis BBC Symphony Orchestra Solo Violin: Tasmin Little The Lark Ascending by Ralph Vaughan Williams, along with pictures of the English countryside, a scenery which proved to be a great inspiration to Vaughan Williams his entire life and career. It was originally composed in 1914 for violin and piano and had its first public performance in 1920: in the same year the composer re-scored it for solo violin and orchestra, which premiered in 1921, and is the more frequently performed version. It is one of the most popular pieces in the Classical repertoire among British listeners, as well as New Yorkers and classical music fans in New Zealand. -

This was the first recording I ever made; the concert that made me fall in love with Tasmin LIttle and Vaughan Williams, and develop a passionate distaste for the works of Sir Harrison Birtwistle. Chandos have just released a brand new recording of this piece, with Tasmin Little, Sir Andrew Davis, and the BBC Philharmonic. Like Vaughan Williams' Tallis Fantasia, this is a pastoral work of transcendent beauty and power. The Lark Ascending was inspired by George Meredith's 122-line poem of the same name about the skylark (Alauda arvensis). He included this portion of Meredith's poem on the flyleaf of the published work:
He rises and begins to round,
He drops the silver chain of sound,
Of many links without a break,
In chirrup, whistle, slur and shake.
For singing till his heaven fills,
'Tis love of earth that he instils,
And ever winging up and up,
Our valley is his golden cup
And he the wine which overflows
to lift us with him as he goes.
Till lost on his aerial rings
In light, and then the fancy sings.
This work is of course covered well on YouTube and everywhere else for that matter. I make no apology for revisiting this music because I have just returned home to England after a lengthy absence, and England's landscapes here in late May are easily the equal of any other of our planet's outstanding places, both natural and man-made.
I took these photos during the past few weeks in the Peak District, Derbyshire, England. The opening skylark pic is courtesy of the Cambridgeshire Bird Club © Peter Beesley. I hope Peter will not mind my including his lovely photograph here.
Troublingly, this iconic bird is now on the danger list, of which more below. However, it was encouraging to witness only a few weeks ago no less than three of these beautiful larks singing their lofty song above the late Neolithic henge at Arbor Low (5:11).
From the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB):
Skylark populations are declining in almost all countries of northern and western Europe. In the UK, the population halved during the 1990s, and is still declining. In the preferred habitat of farmland, skylarks declined by 75% between 1972 and 1996.
The main cause of this decline is considered to be the widespread switch from spring to autumn-sown cereals, which has resulted in a dramatic reduction in the number of chicks raised each year.
