GE90-115B Gas Turbine Jet Engine Testing and Evaluation
I takes a lot of money and time to test as thoroughly as the FAA, military, and GE require. More money and time and lives are saved by finding most problems before they become much larger.
Some claim US gas turbine aircraft engines can't take turbulence or odd angles of attack. The claim is clearly false, if you note the shot of the crosswind testing fans. The crosswind fans can simulate hurricane winds at any angle. The fan and the engine can be pivoted to simulate any angle.
Typically it is some former soviet block people that make those claims. They think just because they carelessly showboat fighters at air shows doing extreme AOA, that they are the only ones that can do so. The fact is that we don't make a habit of showboating at air shows because it is risky. The former soviet block has crashed a lot of fighters showboating extreme AOAs. The fact is any time you move a gas turbine with reverse airflow your risk of a flameout increases dramatically. The exhaust can recirculate back into the intake the result can be a backfire or flameout or just reduced power; all can be fatal if you are flying with no margin of error at an air show.
Normally; US pilots are told to avoid doing things that can cause cavitation or recirculation, particularly wile airborne. They are tested at higher altitude in remote areas to give a good chance of recovery, and restart, and if nothing else ejection.
There are some exceptions (sometimes turbofans and turboprops), but it still can be a little risky to the engine.
Note this C-17 backfire. I think there was no real damage to the engine in this case.

In 1995, the GE90 engine debuted aboard a British Airways 777 airplane along with commercial aviation’s first-ever carbon-fiber composite fan blades. Early GE90 engine models boasted outputs between 74,000 and 94,000 lbs. of thrust, and today it remains the world’s largest turbofan engine.
GE has continued to improve upon the GE90 design with larger variants (-110B and -115B) built exclusively for Boeing’s largest 777 models (777-200LR and 777-300ER). The GE90 is now the best-selling engine for that aircraft family.
Snecma of France, Avio Aero of Italy and IHI Corporation of Japan are all revenue-sharing participants in the GE90 program.

This is my 1000th video on YouTube. I wanted to celebrate by making a video of my favorite aircraft engine, the GE90-115B. The fan is an advanced, larger diameter unit made from composite materials and is the first production engine to feature swept rotor blades. Although the larger fan in itself would produce a higher static thrust, an increase in core size and, thereby core power, was required to improve the net thrust at normal flight speeds. In October 2003, a Boeing 777-300ER broke the ETOPS record by being able to fly five and a half hours (330 minutes) with one engine shut down. The aircraft, with GE90-115B engines, flew from Seattle to Taiwan as part of the ETOPS certification programme. Thank you to all my SpeedbirdHD fans for your support. To another 1000 videos... In 1995, the GE90 engine debuted aboard a British Airways 777 airplane along with commercial aviation’s first-ever carbon-fiber composite fan blades. Early GE90 engine models boasted outputs between 74,000 and 94,000 lbs. of thrust, and today it remains the world’s largest turbofan engine. GE has continued to improve upon the GE90 design with larger variants (-110B and -115B) built exclusively for Boeing’s largest 777 models (777-200LR and 777-300ER). The GE90 is now the best-selling engine for that aircraft family. General Electric GE90-115B Engine - The Best In the World
This is my 1000th video on YouTube. I wanted to celebrate by making a video of my favorite aircraft engine, the GE90-115B. The fan is an advanced, larger diameter unit made from composite materials and is the first production engine to feature swept rotor blades. Although the larger fan in itself would produce a higher static thrust, an increase in core size and, thereby core power, was required to improve the net thrust at normal flight speeds. In October 2003, a Boeing 777-300ER broke the ETOPS record by being able to fly five and a half hours (330 minutes) with one engine shut down. The aircraft, with GE90-115B engines, flew from Seattle to Taiwan as part of the ETOPS certification programme. Thank you to all my SpeedbirdHD fans for your support. To another 1000 videos... I takes a lot of money and time to test as thoroughly as the FAA, military, and GE require. More money and time and lives are saved by finding most problems before they become much larger.
Some claim US gas turbine aircraft engines can't take turbulence or odd angles of attack. The claim is clearly false, if you note the shot of the crosswind testing fans. The crosswind fans can simulate hurricane winds at any angle. The fan and the engine can be pivoted to simulate any angle.
Typically it is some former soviet block people that make those claims. They think just because they carelessly showboat fighters at air shows doing extreme AOA, that they are the only ones that can do so. The fact is that we don't make a habit of showboating at air shows because it is risky. The former soviet block has crashed a lot of fighters showboating extreme AOAs. The fact is any time you move a gas turbine with reverse airflow your risk of a flameout increases dramatically. The exhaust can recirculate back into the intake the result can be a backfire or flameout or just reduced power; all can be fatal if you are flying with no margin of error at an air show.
Normally; US pilots are told to avoid doing things that can cause cavitation or recirculation, particularly wile airborne. They are tested at higher altitude in remote areas to give a good chance of recovery, and restart, and if nothing else ejection.
There are some exceptions (sometimes turbofans and turboprops), but it still can be a little risky to the engine.
Note this C-17 backfire. I think there was no real damage to the engine in this case.
