We finally got a rare glimpse of the embattled
Gaza Strip and a chance to see what life was like under the rule of Hamas. In
2007 we tried and failed to get into
Gaza through the Israeli-controlled
Erez Crossing.
Back then the rival
Palestinian factions of Hamas and Fatah were engaged in a bloody war for control of this tiny strip of land. Hamas won. When the post-Mubarak government of
Egypt decided to start letting small numbers of folks into Gaza through their
Rafah Crossing, we knew we could finally enter the region.

They call it ‘the world’s biggest prison’.
Nearly two million people live on a small strip of land, about the same size as
Manhattan. Very few people get in or out of the
Gaza strip.
It’s under an
Israeli blockade - by land, sea and air.
Inside, a generation has grown up knowing only conflict, poverty and destruction.
Nicole Johnston has reported on
Gaza for years, and covered two wars with
Israel from the strip. In this
Newsmakers documentary she returns during peacetime, to see how people have survived ten years under siege.

During the devastating 50-day war in
Israel and
Gaza this past summer, around 18,
000 homes in Gaza were destroyed or severely damaged, leaving around
120,000 residents homeless.
Now, with trouble in neighboring

Gaza Strip are moving slowly. With the UN warning of a growing humanitarian crisis for the people of Gaza, many fear that another armed conflict is imminent. Six months after the end of fighting,
VICE News returns to the region to investigate the progress on reconstruction.
In part one, VICE
News correspondent Danny Gold returns to Shija'iyya, the neighborhood that bore
the brunt of last summer's fighting, and investigates how the closure of the
Rafah crossing and demolition of the underground tunnels to
Egypt has impacted Gaza's fragile economy.

wn.com/Fallout In Gaza Six Months On (Full Length)
During the devastating 50-day war in
Israel and
Gaza this past summer, around 18,
000 homes in Gaza were destroyed or severely damaged, leaving around
120,000 residents homeless.
Now, with trouble in neighboring
Sinai and infighting between
Palestinian factions, reconstruction efforts in the beleaguered
Gaza Strip are moving slowly. With the UN warning of a growing humanitarian crisis for the people of Gaza, many fear that another armed conflict is imminent.
Six months after the end of fighting,
VICE News returns to the region to investigate the progress on reconstruction.

"WE WILL NOT GO DOWN" -
Lyrics:
A blinding flash of white light
Lit up the sky over
Gaza tonight
People running for cover
Not knowing whether they're dead or alive
They came with their tanks and their planes
With ravaging fiery flames
And nothing remains
Just a voice rising up in the smoky haze
We will not go down
In the night, without a fight
You can burn up our mosques and our homes and our schools
But our spirit will never die
We will not go down
In Gaza tonight
Women and children alike
Murdered and massacred night after night
While the so-called leaders of countries afar
Debated on who's wrong or right
But their powerless words were in vain
And the bombs fell down like acid rain
But through the tears and the blood and the pain
You can still hear that voice through the smoky haze
We will not go down
In the night, without a fight
You can burn up our mosques and our homes and our schools
But our spirit will never die
We will not go down
In Gaza tonight
We will not go down
In the night, without a fight
You can burn up our mosques and our homes and our schools
But our spirit will never die
We will not go down
In the night, without a fight

Hundred of
Stingray ride to the beach
-Surah

UN Official Breaks Down Over Shelled Gaza School
"After a
United Nations-run school sheltering more than 3,
000 Palestinians was shelled early Wednesday, UN official
Chris Gunness could not contain his grief while on camera with
Al Jazeera Arabic.
"The rights of Palestinians, and even their children, are wholesale denied
... and it's appalling,"
Gunness, spokesman for the
UN agency for
Palestinian refugees (
UNRWA), told Al Jazeera Arabic from
Jerusalem. The interviewer appears to thank him for appearing, upon which Gunness breaks down and weeps.
Gaza's
Ministry of Health said at least 17 people were killed and 90 wounded by the school shelling. An
Israeli military spokesman told the
New York Times that
Israeli troops did not target UN facilities, but did respond to
Palestinian militant fire from nearby the school in
Jabaliya refugee camp."*

25 Most Dangerous Places To Visit As A Tourist
While some places are on this list due to armed conflicts and violence, other places are on the list thanks to physical or biological calamities.
Regardless of the reasons,
the one thing all of these places have in common is that most western governments do not advise travel to them unless it is absolutely necessary. These are the 25 most dangerous places to visit as a tourist. Also, before we continue, just remember, being on this list doesn't necessarily mean the entire country is bad to visit (although it can). Just make sure to check on regional travel warnings.

Egypt is perhaps best known as the home of the ancient

Less well-known is Egypt's medieval heritage, courtesy of
Coptic Christianity and
Islam - ancient churches, monasteries and mosques punctuate the Egyptian landscape. Egypt stimulates the imagination of western tourists like few other countries and is probably one of the most popular tourist destinations world-wide.
The regularity and richness of the annual Nile River flood, coupled with semi-isolation provided by deserts to the east and west, allowed for the development of one of the world's great civilizations. A unified kingdom arose around
3200 B.C. and a series of dynasties ruled in Egypt for the next three millennia. The last native dynasty fell to the Persians in 341 B.C., who in turn were replaced by the
Greeks,
Romans, and Byzantines. It was the
Arabs who introduced Islam and the
Arabic language in the
7th century and who ruled for the next six centuries. A local military caste, the
Mamluks, took control about 1250 and continued to govern after the conquest of Egypt by the
Ottoman Turks in 1517.
Following the completion of the
Suez Canal in
1869, Egypt became an important world transportation hub, but also fell heavily into debt. Ostensibly to protect its investments,
Britain seized control of Egypt's government in
1882, but nominal allegiance to the
Ottoman Empire continued until
1914. Partially independent from the UK in 1922. The completion of the
Aswan High Dam in
1971 and the resultant
Lake Nasser have altered the time-honored place of the Nile River in agriculture and the ecology of Egypt. A rapidly growing population (the largest in the
Arab world), limited arable land, and dependence on the
Nile all continue to overtax resources and stress society.
The government has struggled to prepare the economy for the new millennium through economic reform and massive investment in communications and physical infrastructure.

My name is Zahi Shaked
In
2000 I became a registered liscenced tourist guide.
My dedication in life is to pass on the ancient history of the
Holy Land.
Following upon many years of travel around the world, which was highlighted by a very exciting emotional and soul-searching meeting with the
Dalai Lama, I realized that I had a mission. To pass on the the history of the Holy Land, its religions, and in particular, the birth and development of
Christianity.
In order to fulfill this "calling" in the best way possible, I studied in depth, visited, and personally experienced each and every important site of the ancient Christians. I studied for and received my first bachelors degree in the ancient history of the Holy Land, and am presently completing my studies for my second degree.(
Masters)
Parralel to my studies, and in order to earn a living, I was employed for many years in advertising. What I learned there was how to attract the publics attention, generate and, increase interest, and assimilate information. All this I use as tools to describe, explain and deepen the interest in the sites that we visit. From my experience, I have learned that in this way, the Holy Land becomes more than just history, and that the large stones that we see scattered about in dissaray, join together one by one until they become - a
Byzantine Church. This also happens when I lead a group of
Pilgrims in the
Steps of
Jesus. We climb to the peak of
Mount Precipice, "glide" over the land to the
Sea of Galilee, land on the water and "see" the miracle which enfolds before us. This is a many faceted experience. Not only history which you will remember and cherish, but an experience which I hope will be inplanted in your hearts and minds, and will accompany you all the days of your life.

GAZA: INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT OPENS
English/Nat
Gaza International Airport is finally opened.
After years of negotiations, fund-raising and hope, the
Palestinian people are moving one step closer to nationhood.
Palestinian leader
Yasser Arafat was to greet the first arrival, a plane carrying government officials from
Cairo.
Last minute preparations and security checks were still being carried out hours before the first plane was due to arrive.
Gaza International Airport was officially opened by Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat as he welcomed the first plane to land.
Arafat will fly on his presidential plane for the first time out of his homeland to
Paris to meet with
French President Jacques Chirac.
Until now, Arafat has had to drive to
Egypt, where his plane was kept, and fly on from there.
Palestine Airlines, with a small fleet that includes one
Boeing 727, will begin direct flights to
Jordan, Egypt and
Morocco next week.
But for now all attention was on the Egypt Air plane - the first arrival at the new airport.
Despite its shortcomings, many
Palestinians consider the airport a big step toward independence.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
"This is a great day, a great achievement for all the Palestinian people."
SUPER CAPTION: Fayez Zaidan, chairman of Palestinian
Civil Aviation Authority
But only hours before the first flights arrived, the control tower was still without controls, the check-in counter had no computers and the runway was missing flood lights for night
landings.
Until the floodlights arrive, there will be no night flights.
Palestinian officials said most for the equipment was being held up at the
Israeli shipping port of
Ashdod. The opening of their own seaport is next on the Palestinian wish list and was promised under the Wye agreement.
Civil aviation contracts with other carriers are in the works and expanded service plans include weekly flights to
Cyprus and
Japan.
The airport opening had been held up for two years because of disputes between
Israel and Arafat's autonomous government over Israel's security role.
Israel will have a say over who and what enters
Gaza, but the Israeli monitors will operate discretely, behind one-way mirrors, as they do now at two other crossings into autonomous
Palestinian areas.
Israel will not interfere with departures from the airport.
The airport protocol was signed last week, as part of the
Wye River peace deal signed last month by Israel and the Palestinians.
For those living in the small, overcrowded
Gaza Strip, which is ringed by the
Mediterranean on one side and by barbed wire on the other three, it may help ease the
ever-present feeling of being trapped
.
In the past, Palestinians wanting to fly abroad needed permission to enter Israel and fly out of the international airport near
Tel Aviv.
Israel rarely granted permission, however, forcing Palestinians to travel through Israeli-controlled land routes to Egypt or Jordan to catch flights.
West Bank Palestinians, separated from Gaza by Israel, will still need Israeli permission to travel to the
Gaza airport.
Designed in an
Oriental style with elaborate tiles imported from Morocco, the airport has one passenger terminal, a
VIP lounge and a three-kilometre (two-mile)-long runway.
For the time being,
Israelis will not be permitted to use the airport because of security concerns.
However, many believe
Gaza International will eventually rival
Ben Gurion International Airport near Tel Aviv.

The 27 km long lagoon with its beautiful beachfront is the ideal spot for family holidays, where you can participate in various water sport.
Self Drive Do it Yourself Mozambique:
http://www.selfdrive4x4.co.za/
The mouth of the lagoon, usually blocked by a massive sandbank, is best reached by boat, although a long difficult 4x4 track does allow you access to the beach and the open sea.
A qualified dive instructor with a fully equipped boat [s available for those who want to explore the magnificent reefs in the area either diving or snorkeling.
Deep-sea fishing in the area is also very popular and boats can be chartered at the resort.
Bilene is an excellent destination for all watersports enthusiasts especially those who want to ski, sail or just enjoy the beauty of the lagoon on a barge trip.
