Patti Page - Mad About The Boy
Notes for this selection taken from
the CD collection "Patti Page - A
Golden Celebration" -
1997 - written by
Colin Escott:
"Ostensibly, the tableau that (composer)
Noel Coward is painting for us here is that of a woman nursing a silly, unrequited passion for a movie star, but given
Coward's (homo)sexual proclivity and his years in
Hollywood, it might have been etched from something closer to personal experience. (Reportedly, his great admiration for movie star
Cary Grant.) The song was introduced in the show "
Words and Music" in 1932, and has been revived endlessly ever since.
Patti's version seems to underscore Coward's intent. Of course this passion is silly, but what can you do when you're smitten?"
