Alicia de Larrocha i de la Calle (23 May 1923 – 25 September 2009) was a Spanish pianist from Catalonia. One of the great piano legends of the 20th century, Reuters called her "the greatest Spanish pianist in history",Time "one of the world's most outstanding pianists" and The Guardian "the leading Spanish pianist of her time".
She won multiple Grammy Awards and a Prince of Asturias Award for the Arts. She is credited with bringing greater popularity to the compositions of Isaac Albéniz and Enrique Granados. In 1995, she became the first Spanish artist to win the UNESCO Prize.
Alicia de Larrocha was born in Barcelona. She began studying piano with Frank Marshall at the age of three. Both her parents were pianists and she was also the niece of pianists. Beginning her career at the age of three, she gave her first public performance at the age of five at the International Exposition in Barcelona. She performed her first concert at the age of six at the World's Fair in Seville in 1929, and had her orchestral debut at the age of 11. By 1943, her performances were selling out in Spain. She began touring internationally in 1947, and in 1954 toured North America with the Los Angeles Philharmonic. In 1969, de Larrocha performed in Boston for the Peabody Mason Concert series.

Philip Glass (born January 31, 1937) is an American composer. One of the highest profile composers writing "classical" music today, he is often said to be one of the most influential composers of the late 20th century. His music is also often controversially described as minimalist, along with the work of the other "major minimalists" La Monte Young, Terry Riley and Steve Reich.
He has lately distanced himself from the "minimalist" label, describing himself instead as a composer of "music with repetitive structures." Though his early mature music shares much with what is normally called "minimalist", he has since evolved stylistically. Currently, he describes himself as a "Classicist", pointing out that he is trained in harmony and counterpoint and studied such composers as Franz Schubert, Johann Sebastian Bach and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart with Nadia Boulanger.
Glass is a prolific composer: he has written works for the musical group which he founded, the Philip Glass Ensemble (with which he still performs on keyboards), as well as operas, musical theatre works, ten symphonies, eleven concertos, solo works, chamber music including string quartets and instrumental sonatas, and film scores. Three of his film scores have been nominated for Academy Awards.

A Tribute to ALICIA DE LARROCHA (23 May 1923 -- 25 September 2009) ~ 91st Anniversary of the Birth of the Legendary Pianist ~ Alicia de Larrocha was born on 23 May 1923 to a musical family, studied piano with Frank Marshall at the age of three. She made her debut at the age of 5, performed her first piano concerto the following year, made her first recording at age 9, and was a soloist with the Madrid Symphony Orchestra at 11. This child prodigy then started to tour Europe and North America with sold-out performances. Although de Larrocha was less than 5 feet tall and had unusually small hands for a piano virtuoso, she managed to champion all the big piano concertos, such as those by Brahms and Rachmaninov. Alicia de Larrocha was born on 23 May 1923 to a musical family, studied piano with Frank Marshall at the age of three. She made her debut at the age of 5, performed her first piano concerto the following year, made her first recording at age 9, and was a soloist with the Madrid Symphony Orchestra at 11. This child prodigy then started to tour Europe and North America with sold-out performances. Although de Larrocha was less than 5 feet tall and had unusually small hands for a piano virtuoso, she managed to champion all the big piano concertos, such as those by Brahms and Rachmaninov. De Larrocha was also famous for her marvelous interpretation of Mozart and Schumann, but her greatest contribution as a musician has been her unrivalled advocacy of Spanish piano music.
Over the years, de Larrocha was awarded numerous prizes for her recordings, including four Grammies. After some 4,000 concerts around the world, she eventually retired in 2003. She died on 25 September 2009 in Barcelona, Spain, aged 86. Reuters called her "the greatest Spanish pianist in history", while Time regarded her as "one of the world's most outstanding pianists".
