Dave Pine is a member of the San Mateo County Board of Supervisors, and represents Supervisorial District 1, which includes the eastern two-thirds of South San Francisco and all of San Bruno, Millbrae, Burlingame, and Hillsborough. He was elected on May 3, 2011 in an all-mail-ballot special election that was held to fill the vacancy created when Supervisor Mark Church resigned to become Chief Elections Officer & Assessor-County Clerk-Recorder Pine had been a school board member before being elected Supervisor, serving on the Burlingame School District Board of Trustees from 2003 to 2006 and on the San Mateo Union High School District Board of Trustees from 2007 to 2011. Before entering politics, Pine was a lawyer for three Silicon Valley tech companies: Radius, Excite@Home, and Handspring.
Dave Pine was born in Massachusetts and grew up in a small New Hampshire town, where his father worked as a professor and his mother a teacher. Later, both of his siblings also pursued careers in education; his brother became a principal and his sister an admissions officer.
San Mateo, Spanish for Saint Matthew, is the name for many places:
San Mateo County (/ˌsæn məˈteɪ.oʊ/ SAN mə-TAY-oh; Spanish for "Saint Matthew") is a county located in the U.S. state of California. As of the 2010 census, the population was 718,451. The county seat is Redwood City.
San Mateo County is included in the San Francisco-Oakland-Hayward, CA Metropolitan Statistical Area, and is part of the San Francisco Bay Area, the nine counties bordering San Francisco Bay. It covers most of the San Francisco Peninsula. San Francisco International Airport is located at the northern end of the county, and Silicon Valley begins at the southern end. The county's built-up areas are mostly suburban with some areas being very urban, and are home to several corporate campuses.
San Mateo County was formed in 1856 after San Francisco County, one of the state's 18 original counties since California's statehood in 1850, was split apart. Until 1856, San Francisco's city limits extended west to Divisadero Street and Castro Street, and south to 20th Street. In response to the lawlessness and vigilantism that escalated rapidly between 1855 and 1856, the California government decided to divide the county. A straight line was then drawn across the tip of the San Francisco Peninsula just north of San Bruno Mountain. Everything south of the line became the new San Mateo County while everything north of the line became the new consolidated City and County of San Francisco, to date the only consolidated city-county in California. San Mateo County then annexed part of northern Santa Cruz County in 1868.
Pines are conifer trees in the genus Pinus /ˈpiːnuːs/, in the family Pinaceae. They are the only genus in the subfamily Pinoideae. The Plant List compiled by the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew and Missouri Botanical Garden accepts 126 species names of pines as current, together with 35 unresolved species and many more synonyms.
The modern English name pine derives from Latin pinus which some have traced to the Indo-European base *pīt- ‘resin’ (source of English pituitary). In the past (pre-19th century) they were often known as fir, from Old Norse fura, by way of Middle English firre. The Old Norse name is still used for pines in some modern north European languages, in Danish fyr, in Norwegian fura/fure/furu, Swedish fura/furu, Dutch vuren, and Föhre in German, but in modern English, fir is now restricted to fir (Abies) and Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga).
Pines are gymnosperms. The genus is divided into three subgenera, which can be distinguished by cone, seed, and leaf characters:
