Moffat Needed Help and we thank God we found him in time: Elderly people with cognitive deficits and depression are very vulnerable to Jiggers. And complications can lead even to death. Moffat had no hope and no care. He had no friend. And though he appeared to be about 60, he was confused and said he was 'four'. Sadly, he was laughed at the the children standing around. We find it is common for the jigger victims to be confused, especially about age. We understand there can be many reasons, but certainly the torture and pain that they live with having jiggers eating at them would make matters worse. We tried to make meaning out of the things that could not have made much sense to him earlier on. Now that Moffat is jigger free, we have faith in the light on his path. We wish him the very best as we work with him to make life better.
THE PURPOSE OF THIS DOCUMENTARY: These videos are for educational purposes and this does not entail just getting the education while watching, but it is also very important for future endeavors in research. We believe every video is a building block for the future research efforts because every individual video presents unique features which might interest an individual researcher in the future. In this regard we shall put out as many videos and we can, and this is a very important way to share to the world more about the jigger and what it is doing unnoticed in Africa.

Our goal is to help alleviate this jigger infestation suffered by an estimated 1.5 - 2.4 million of the 40 million Kenyans are Jigger Victims. This is a serious situation affecting over 5% of the population.
MEDICAL CONDITION: The condition depicted is known as "Tungiasis". It is an infestation of the skin by a burrowing flea called Tunga penetrans (aka: Chigoe Flea). A victim is commonly referred to as having "Jiggers." These fleas tend to infest those who have inadequate living conditions and sanitation. The flea lives both outside around warm-blooded mammals and inside poorly constructed homes. It inhabits dust on floors, cracks in walls and bedding. Shoes protect to some degree but are often not affordable or adequate. More needs to be done to ensure a jigger-free environment, including extermination and sanitation measures, improvements in home construction and making clean bedding more commonplace. Jiggers are vicious and real!
The parasites burrow into the skin and then swell up with eggs; the larvae hatch and the cycle continues. Jiggers cause untold suffering in the afflicted, interfering with sleep, and causing itching, pain and the inability to walk. The parasite can afflict all parts of the body. Victims are often socially stigmatized, left isolated and without family or communal support.
METHODOLOGY: Rise Up Society uses the method of physical extraction under the direction of highly qualified, local physicians with hands-on knowledge in this field. We have refined our method over a 3-year period in which approximately 150,000 victims of Jigger infestation have been helped. We have incorporated new and improved equipment, medicines and practices over the course of time as information became available and funding allowed. While physical extraction is not new, it is efficient and our preferred method until research reveals better treatments. Treatment options for Jiggers vary, and our method may not reflect the practices of other groups in other parts of Kenya or in the surrounding countries that are also inflicted with the jigger menace.

Moffat (Scottish Gaelic: Am Magh Fada, "The Long Plain") is a former burgh and spa town in Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland, lying on the River Annan, with a population of around 2,500. The Moffat House Hotel, located at the northern end of the High Street, was designed by John Adam. The nearby Star Hotel, a mere 20 ft (6 m) wide, boasted a record in the Guinness Book of Records as the narrowest hotel in the world. Moffat won the famous "Britain In Bloom" contest in 1996. Moffat is also the home to the well known Moffat toffee.
The Devil's Beef Tub near Moffat was used by the members of Clan Moffat and later the members of Clan Johnstone to hoard cattle stolen in predatory raids. The town is held to be the ancestral seat of Clan Moffat.
During the 17th century Moffat began to grow from a small village into a popular spa town. The sulphurous waters of Moffat Spa were believed to have healing properties and during the Victorian era the high demand led to the water being piped down from the well to a specially built bath house in the town centre (now the Town Hall). Luxurious hotels sprang up to accommodate the increasing numbers of tourists. One such hotel opened during Moffat's heyday in 1878, Moffat's Hydropathic hotel was destroyed in a fire in 1921.

Benedict Timothy Carlton Cumberbatch (born 19 July 1976) is an English film, television, radio and theatre actor. His most acclaimed roles include Stephen Hawking in the BBC drama Hawking (2004); William Pitt in the historical film Amazing Grace (2006); the protagonist Stephen Ezard in the miniseries thriller The Last Enemy (2008); Paul Marshall in Atonement (2007); Bernard in Small Island (2009); Sherlock Holmes in the modern BBC adaptation series Sherlock (2010); and Peter Guillam in the spy thriller Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy (2011).
In February 2011, he began playing both Victor Frankenstein and his creature opposite Jonny Lee Miller in Danny Boyle's stage adaptation of Mary Shelley's Frankenstein. The play had a three-month run at the National Theatre. In late 2011, he played Major Stewart in Steven Spielberg's War Horse (2011). The film received five BAFTA nominations and six Academy Award nominations, including the Best Picture nomination in 2012. THE COPPER TOP The bar's busier than it should be on a weekday afternoon as the door swings shut behind me, but I'm the only one wearing a suit. No-one seems to notice my entrance though, I suppose they must be used to mourners in the nearest pub to the crematorium. I don't think I could've coped with the wake, I had to make a quick exit to be alone with my memories, I was sick of hearing everyone else's. I buy a pint and sit down. 'See, the trouble with you is that you're top heavy,' said the tailor as he measured me up. They don't get asked much for three-piece suits these days, so my choice was limited. I went for all-purpose black, or 'charcoal grey' as he called it. Looks black to me. This is the second time I've worn it, the first was a wedding and there's a christening next week so I might as well get my money's worth. Birth, love and death: the only reasons to get dressed up. I loosen my tie. Halfway through my pint and a text message from John says he's waiting outside, sooner than I'd expected. I down what's left and step out into the bright afternoon and get in the car. I look up and see the pub's once brilliant copper roof has oxidized over the years and it's now a dull, pastel green. Everything's getting older.

Our goal is to help alleviate this jigger infestation suffered by an estimated 1.5 - 2.4 million of the 40 million Kenyans are Jigger Victims. This is a serious situation affecting over 5% of the population.
MEDICAL CONDITION: The condition depicted is known as "Tungiasis". It is an infestation of the skin by a burrowing flea called Tunga penetrans (aka: Chigoe Flea). A victim is commonly referred to as having "Jiggers." These fleas tend to infest those who have inadequate living conditions and sanitation. The flea lives both outside around warm-blooded mammals and inside poorly constructed homes. It inhabits dust on floors, cracks in walls and bedding. Shoes protect to some degree but are often not affordable or adequate. More needs to be done to ensure a jigger-free environment, including extermination and sanitation measures, improvements in home construction and making clean bedding more commonplace. Jiggers are vicious and real!
The parasites burrow into the skin and then swell up with eggs; the larvae hatch and the cycle continues. Jiggers cause untold suffering in the afflicted, interfering with sleep, and causing itching, pain and the inability to walk. The parasite can afflict all parts of the body. Victims are often socially stigmatized, left isolated and without family or communal support.
METHODOLOGY: Rise Up Society uses the method of physical extraction under the direction of highly qualified, local physicians with hands-on knowledge in this field. We have refined our method over a 3-year period in which approximately 150,000 victims of Jigger infestation have been helped. We have incorporated new and improved equipment, medicines and practices over the course of time as information became available and funding allowed. While physical extraction is not new, it is efficient and our preferred method until research reveals better treatments. Treatment options for Jiggers vary, and our method may not reflect the practices of other groups in other parts of Kenya or in the surrounding countries that are also inflicted with the jigger menace.

REGISTERED CHARITY: Rise Up Society, Kenya, is a Christian non-profit society registered with the Government of Kenya. We are showing God's love in action. Our goal is to help alleviate this jigger infestation suffered by an estimated 1.5 - 2.4 million of the 40 million Kenyans are Jigger Victims. This is a serious situation affecting over 5% of the population.
MEDICAL CONDITION: The condition depicted is known as "Tungiasis". It is an infestation of the skin by a burrowing flea called Tunga penetrans (aka: Chigoe Flea). A victim is commonly referred to as having "Jiggers." These fleas tend to infest those who have inadequate living conditions and sanitation. The flea lives both outside around warm-blooded mammals and inside poorly constructed homes. It inhabits dust on floors, cracks in walls and bedding. Shoes protect to some degree but are often not affordable or adequate. More needs to be done to ensure a jigger-free environment, including extermination and sanitation measures, improvements in home construction and making clean bedding more commonplace. Jiggers are vicious and real!
The parasites burrow into the skin and then swell up with eggs; the larvae hatch and the cycle continues. Jiggers cause untold suffering in the afflicted, interfering with sleep, and causing itching, pain and the inability to walk. The parasite can afflict all parts of the body. Victims are often socially stigmatized, left isolated and without family or communal support.
METHODOLOGY: Rise Up Society uses the method of physical extraction under the direction of highly qualified, local physicians with hands-on knowledge in this field. We have refined our method over a 3-year period in which approximately 150,000 victims of Jigger infestation have been helped. We have incorporated new and improved equipment, medicines and practices over the course of time as information became available and funding allowed. While physical extraction is not new, it is efficient and our preferred method until research reveals better treatments. Treatment options for Jiggers vary, and our method may not reflect the practices of other groups in other parts of Kenya or in the surrounding countries that are also inflicted with the jigger menace.

The bar's busier than it should be on a weekday afternoon as the door swings shut behind me, but I'm the only one wearing a suit. No-one seems to notice my entrance though, I suppose they must be used to mourners in the nearest pub to the crematorium. I don't think I could've coped with the wake, I had to make a quick exit to be alone with my memories, I was sick of hearing everyone else's. I buy a pint and sit down.
'See, the trouble with you is that you're top heavy,' said the tailor as he measured me up. They don't get asked much for three-piece suits these days, so my choice was limited. I went for all-purpose black, or 'charcoal grey' as he called it. Looks black to me. This is the second time I've worn it, the first was a wedding and there's a christening next week so I might as well get my money's worth. Birth, love and death: the only reasons to get dressed up. I loosen my tie.
Halfway through my pint and a text message from John says he's waiting outside, sooner than I'd expected. I down what's left and step out into the bright afternoon and get in the car. I look up and see the pub's once brilliant copper roof has oxidized over the years and it's now a dull, pastel green. Everything's getting older.

MEDICAL CONDITION: The condition depicted is known as "Tungiasis". It is an infestation of the skin by a burrowing flea called Tunga penetrans (aka: Chigoe Flea). A victim is commonly referred to as having "Jiggers." These fleas tend to infest those who have inadequate living conditions and sanitation. The flea lives both outside around warm-blooded mammals and inside poorly constructed homes. It inhabits dust on floors, cracks in walls and bedding. Shoes protect to some degree but are often not affordable or adequate. More needs to be done to ensure a jigger-free environment, including extermination and sanitation measures, improvements in home construction and making clean bedding more commonplace. Jiggers are vicious and real!
The parasites burrow into the skin and then swell up with eggs; the larvae hatch and the cycle continues. Jiggers cause untold suffering in the afflicted, interfering with sleep, and causing itching, pain and the inability to walk. The parasite can afflict all parts of the body. Victims are often socially stigmatized, left isolated and without family or communal support.
METHODOLOGY: Rise Up Society uses the method of physical extraction under the direction of highly qualified, local physicians with hands-on knowledge in this field. We have refined our method over a 3-year period in which approximately 150,000 victims of Jigger infestation have been helped. We have incorporated new and improved equipment, medicines and practices over the course of time as information became available and funding allowed. While physical extraction is not new, it is efficient and our preferred method until research reveals better treatments. Treatment options for Jiggers vary, and our method may not reflect the practices of other groups in other parts of Kenya or in the surrounding countries that are also inflicted with the jigger menace.

While this is my fourth quad copter, it's my first that utilizes a GoPro camera. Yes, three of the four copters I've owned incorporated cameras, but they were proprietary cameras and went from the box to the air in a relatively short period. In fact, other than the time required for battery charging, my Q500 4K went from the box to the air much quicker that my iPhones and in some respects, were a bit easier to get activated and up and running. Considering that Yuneec has developed an excellent reputation for developing easy to setup and fly copters, I had no reason to expect anything different. But due to the fact the Typhoon G uses a GoPro Hero 4 camera and not one created specifically for a copter, the setup was much more complicated and required a Facetime call to Yuneec Tech Support ... -

Currently he serves as the white water consultant to the Kingdom of Bhutan. National Geographic regard him as "the most experienced river guide in the Himalayas." Throughout his career, Gerry has spent a considerable amount of time working in the field of adventure documentary production. He has summated Mt. Everest on two occasions for film productions.

While this is my fourth quad copter, it's my first that utilizes a GoPro camera.
Yes, three of the four copters I've owned incorporated cameras, but they were proprietary cameras and went from the box to the air in a relatively short period. In fact, other than the time required for battery charging, my Q500 4K went from the box to the air much quicker that my iPhones and in some respects, were a bit easier to get activated and up and running.
Considering that Yuneec has developed an excellent reputation for developing easy to setup and fly copters, I had no reason to expect anything different. While this is my fourth quad copter, it's my first that utilizes a GoPro camera.
Yes, three of the four copters I've owned incorporated cameras, but they were proprietary cameras and went from the box to the air in a relatively short period. In fact, other than the time required for battery charging, my Q500 4K went from the box to the air much quicker that my iPhones and in some respects, were a bit easier to get activated and up and running.
Considering that Yuneec has developed an excellent reputation for developing easy to setup and fly copters, I had no reason to expect anything different. In this video you are seeing the Jigger, a parasitic sand flea, being removed from human skin. Viewer discretion is advised!
Tungiasis was first reported in crewmen who sailed with Christopher Columbus. The flea is indigenous to the West Indies/Caribbean/Central America region, but it has spread to Africa, India, Pakistan, and South America. Tungiasis is rarely diagnosed in North America, but it should no longer be obscure to physicians because of increasing international travel to tropical destinations.
To reproduce, the flea requires a warm-blooded host. In addition to humans, reservoir hosts include pigs, dogs, cats, cattle, sheep, horses, mules, rats, mice, and other wild animals!

MEDICAL CONDITION: The condition depicted is known as "Tungiasis". It is an infestation of the skin by a burrowing flea called Tunga penetrans (aka: Chigoe Flea). A victim is commonly referred to as having "Jiggers." These fleas tend to infest those who have inadequate living conditions and sanitation. The flea lives both outside around warm-blooded mammals and inside poorly constructed homes. It inhabits dust on floors, cracks in walls and bedding. Shoes protect to some degree but are often not affordable or adequate. More needs to be done to ensure a jigger-free environment, including extermination and sanitation measures, improvements in home construction and making clean bedding more commonplace. Jiggers are vicious and real!
The parasites burrow into the skin and then swell up with eggs; the larvae hatch and the cycle continues. Jiggers cause untold suffering in the afflicted, interfering with sleep, and causing itching, pain and the inability to walk. The parasite can afflict all parts of the body. Victims are often socially stigmatized, left isolated and without family or communal support.
