The Tick is a fictional character created by cartoonist Ben Edlund in 1986 as a newsletter mascot for the New England Comics chain of Boston area comic stores. He is an absurdist spoof of comic book superheroes. After its creation, the character spun off into an independent comic book series in 1988, and gained mainstream popularity through an animated TV series on Fox in 1994. A short-lived live-action TV series, video game, and various merchandise have also been based on the character. IGN's list of the Top 100 Comic Book Heroes of All Time ranked The Tick as #57.
In 1986, 18-year-old cartoonist Ben Edlund created The Tick as a mascot for a newsletter of the Norwood, Massachusetts store New England Comics, where he was a customer. Edlund expanded this into stories, beginning with the three-page tale "The Tick" in New England Comics Newsletter #14–15 (July/August – September/October 1986), in which the hero escapes from a mental institution. The character became popular and the store financed a black-and-white comic book series, with the first issue released in June, 1988, and subsequently reprinted at least nine times through the next decade, including later editions with additional content. The Tick's sidekick, Arthur, was introduced in The Tick #4 (April 1989).
The Tick: The Animated Series is an American animated television series adaptation of the New England Comics satirical superhero, The Tick. The series aired for three seasons from 1994 to 1996 on the Fox network's Fox Kids block, which introduced the character to a mainstream audience. The Tick has been syndicated by various networks, further increasing the show's cult following, and has been released on both VHS and DVD. A live-action series aired in 2001.
While still in college, Tick creator Ben Edlund was producing his independent comic book series based on the character. He was eventually approached by Kiscom, a small, New Jersey-based toy licensing and design company. Kiscom wanted to merchandise The Tick, much in the way that the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, a rival independent comic series, had been merchandised the previous year. Major TV networks and studios were reluctant to take on an animated series based on the absurd character. Kiscom stayed in touch with Edlund and finally Sunbow Entertainment, the small, New York-based animation company that created The Transformers, G.I. Joe, and The Mask, paired him up with writer Richard Liebmann-Smith. Neither had any experience in animation or television, but for two months they worked vigorously on the first episode of The Tick. Neither man held high esteem for their final script, and their feelings were validated when FOX turned down the first pitch. They were given one more chance to refine it in five days. Over one weekend, they worked "instinctively" with little sleep and ended up satisfying FOX. Edlund later reflected, "We kind of defined in one weekend exactly where the show went for that first season, which was cool."
Tick refers to small arachnids in the order Ixodida.

"The Tick falls prey to an uncommon cold and is a less then subtle sufferer - Arthur while tending him goes next door and is kidnapped by Thrakkorzog, evil ruler of Dimension 14B. Thrak plans to conquer Earth with an army of Tick clones, but all that an Arthur-clone can get in the way of Tick's cell samples is mucus from his handkerchiefs. This leads to the creation of Mucus Tick, whom The Tick must battle for the sake of the world!" Airdate - October 29, 1994
"The super-strong but slow-witted and pretty much insane superhero called "The Tick" is assigned to defend "The City". Arriving there, he meets Arthur, a bank accountant who got fired for wearing his moth suit (that everyone mistakes for a bunny costume). The Tick asks Arthur to become his sidekick and reside in their headquarters: Arthur's apartment. Some criminals calling themselves "The Idea Men", guys who don't want to work anymore and are impossible to understand because of their full-face masks, rob a bank. They fail, thanks to the Tick, but manage to escape. They proceed to threaten to blow up the City's bank if they don't get a million bucks, so the Tick and Arthur go out once more to stop their evil ways." Airdate - September 10, 1994
Arthur confiscates a belt capable of enlarging its wearer's muscles from a new super-villain known as Baron Violent, and, tired of being out of shape, decides to keep it. Along with his muscles, the belt increases the size of his ego, leading him to challenge The Tick.
Great intro & music ! Gotta love them. ;)
Here is a montage of some of my favourite Tick quotes. I wanted to focus on scenes where he is alone rather than with Arthur. I will soon create another one that involves conversations with Arthur such as the infamous "SPOOOON!!!!" Sorry about the red lettering part way through, I couldn't get rid of it.
"After "crashing" the super hero convention, the blue-clad hero, the Tick, is deemed the protector of "the City." On his first mission he runs into Arthur, an accountant with a moth costume who aspires to superherodom. They soon strike up a hero partnership to protect the City from a host of nefarious villains such as Chairface Chippendale, El Seed and many more." Airdate - September '94 - November '96
"The Tick and the gang take Arthur's sister's car to a Superhero night club. Arthur can't get in because he's a sidekick so he has to wait in the sidekicks lounge. A pseudo-superhero calling himself the Tick comes to the club and he and The Tick battle. Also a skinny, tiny villain called the "Evil Midnight Bomber What Bombs at Midnight" tries to blow up the superhero night spot, with hilarious consequences." Airdate - October 22, 1994

"The Tick gets knocked into space and into a self-exploratory journey by a giant genetically-enhanced clown. The remaining superheroes are forced to try to fight off the evil proto-clown until the Tick returns." Airdate - February 4, 1995
"Dinosaur Neil, palaeontologist, curator of Dinosaur Grotto and one-time giant city-destroying mutant, is marrying Arthur's sister Dot. Chairface Chippendale, The Breadmaster and El Seed have other plans, though - plans which involve tampering with Neil's medication, man-eating bouquets, exploding wedding cake, and The Indigestible Man. And as if that wasn't enough, Neil's best man is... The Tick! It's up to our blue hero, Arthur and Dot to save Neil, with the aid of a submarine and 1,400 pounds of pungent raw meat..." Don't play football
We play Fenders
We chop fish in kitchen blenders
We're a disgrace to our gender
We're the men!
Always together night and day
It makes our girlfriends think we're gay
But who needs women when you've got friends?
We're the men!
The men will never let me down
The men will always be around
The men won't argue, scratch, or fight
The men won't say, "I've got a headache tonight"!
On Friday night we'll all jump in a car
And blow all our money at a go-go bar
Sober up for a week to do it over again because
We're the men!
We're twenty-one, but we act like we're ten
We're as immature as we've ever been
Maybe we'll grow up, but I don't know when because
We're the men!
We'll get together
Drink together
Sweat together
Stink together
Laugh together
Cry together
Live together
And die together!
