Geraldine Farrar (February 28, 1882 – March 11, 1967) was an American soprano opera singer and film actress, noted for her beauty, acting ability, and "the intimate timbre of her voice." She had a large following among young women, who were nicknamed "Gerry-flappers".
Farrar was born in Melrose, Massachusetts, the daughter of baseball player Sidney Farrar, and his wife, Henrietta Barnes. At 5 she began studying music in Boston and by 14 was giving recitals. Later she studied voice with the American soprano Emma Thursby in New York, in Paris, and finally with the Italian baritone Francesco Graziani in Berlin. Farrar created a sensation at the Berlin Hofoper with her debut as Marguerite in Charles Gounod's Faust in 1901 and remained with the company for three years, during which time she continued her studies with famed German soprano Lilli Lehmann. (She had been recommended to Lehmann by another famous soprano of the previous generation, Lillian Nordica.). She appeared in the title roles of Ambroise Thomas' Mignon and Jules Massenet's Manon, as well as Juliette in Gounod's Roméo et Juliette. Her admirers in Berlin included Crown Prince Wilhelm of Germany, with whom she is believed to have had a relationship beginning in 1903.

Madama Butterfly (IPA: [maˈdaːma ˈbatterflai]; Madame Butterfly) is an opera in three acts (originally two) by Giacomo Puccini, with an Italian libretto by Luigi Illica and Giuseppe Giacosa. The opera is based in part on the short story "Madame Butterfly" (1898) by John Luther Long, which in turn was based partially on stories told to Long by his sister Jennie Correll and partially on the semi-autobiographical 1887 French novel Madame Chrysanthème by Pierre Loti. Long's version was dramatized by David Belasco as a one-act play, Madame Butterfly: A Tragedy of Japan, which, after premiering in New York in 1900, moved on to London, where Puccini saw it in the summer of that year.
The original version of the opera, in two acts, had its premiere on 17 February 1904 at Teatro alla Scala in Milan. It was poorly received, despite such notable singers as soprano Rosina Storchio, tenor Giovanni Zenatello and baritone Giuseppe De Luca in its lead roles; this was due in part to a late completion by Puccini, and thus inadequate time for rehearsals. Puccini revised the opera, splitting Act II into two (with the Humming Chorus as a bridge to what became Act III) and making other changes. Success ensued, starting with the first performance, on 28 May 1904 in Brescia.

The Metropolitan Opera, commonly referred to as "the Met", is a company based in New York City, resident at the Metropolitan Opera House at the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts. The company is operated by the non-profit Metropolitan Opera Association, with Peter Gelb as general manager. The music director is James Levine. It was founded in 1880 as an alternative to the previously established Academy of Music opera house.
The Metropolitan Opera is the largest classical music organization in North America. It presents about 27 different operas each year in a season which lasts from late September through May. The operas are presented in a rotating repertory schedule with up to seven performances of four different works staged each week. Performances are given in the evening Monday through Saturday with a matinée on Saturday. Several operas are presented in new productions each season. Sometimes these are borrowed from or shared with other opera houses. The rest of the year's operas are given in revivals of productions from previous seasons. The 2012-13 season comprised 209 performances of 28 operas.

Legendary soprano Geraldine Farrar (1882-1967) sings Marguerite's aria "Ah! Je ris de me voir si belle en ce miroir" or the "Jewel Song" from Gounod's Faust. Recorded 1913. Unlike many other sopranos of her era Farrar's voice recorded very well, as you can hear in this example.

I need to alert listeners to the fact that Geraldine Farrar (1882-1967), who portrayed Cio-Cio-San for the first time at the Met, in 1907, was among the first of the great "singing actors," whose interest in cinema and realistic characterization dictated in large part her vocal presentations, which she considered simply a part—albeit an important part—of her performance. In this old recording, you will notice her white, open phonation, a voice sounding remarkably like that of a relatively untrained child singer. This is almost certainly intentional. She is realistically portraying a 15 year old girl with her voice as well as with her actions. Opera has today become, to a large extent, a purely vocal art; this was not necessarily the case back in the day when audiences were often seeing...

Here's an interesting comparison: the Faust final trio (Alerte! Alerte! Ou vous ete perdus!) with Enrico Caruso, Geraldine Farrar, and Marcel Journet, 12 January 1910 Victor recording, and the final trio with John McCormack, Nellie Melba, and Mario Sammarco, 11 May 1910 HMV recording. Two things to note: First of all, Caruso's voice was so large he was made to stand several feet away from Farrar and Journet, who were much closer to the recording horn than he was (this was a common occurrence when Caruso recorded with other artists). McCormack had a much smaller voice so he stood extremely close to the horn when recording. Second of all, Farrar's voice was considerably larger than Melba's. Therefore the difference between the sizes of Caruso and McCormack's voices may not be as apparent ...
Mario Lanza (born Alfred Arnold Cocozza; January 31, 1921 – October 7, 1959) was an American tenor of Italian ancestry, actor and Hollywood film star of the late 1940s and the 1950s. Lanza began studying to be a professional singer at the age of 16. After appearing at the Hollywood Bowl in 1947, Lanza signed a seven-year film contract with Louis B. Mayer, the head of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, who saw his performance and was impressed by his singing. Prior to that, the adult Lanza had sung only two performances of an opera. The following year (1948), however, he sang the role of Pinkerton in Puccini's Madama Butterfly in New Orleans. His film début for MGM was in That Midnight Kiss (1949) with Kathryn Grayson and Ethel Barrymore. A year later, in The Toast of New Orleans, his featured popular so...

The legendary soprano Rosa Ponselle (1897-1981) began her singing career in vaudeville and by playing for silent films in theaters. She made her debut at the Met in 1918 singing with Caruso in Verdi's LA FORZA DEL DESTINO. She later sang the title role in Bizet's CARMEN and succeeded Geraldine Farrar as "the" Carmen of the era. The live performance presented here dates from April 17, 1937, and turned out to be her final operatic performance on the stage. Digitally transferred from sources made from the original acetates with applied Magix audio restoration software to reduce noise and add a mild stereo effect in the mid-tones. There is no added reverb or artificial ambiance.
