Color theory is one of the most important aspects of art. Photography is no different. If you're interested in making fantastic images that stand out its a technique you'll need to get a handle on. The relationship between photographers and color theory is particularly interesting in that the approach to color has changed entirely over the history of making photographs.
In the early days of photography, images were produced in monochrome. It would still be a few years before the autochrome process became available. But even processes such as color gum bi-chromate or even autochrome for that matter, were more involved than basic monochrome photography. In the early days, the process was natively monochrome and color had to be approached and thought about completely differently.
Today in the digital age this is the complete opposite. Cameras natively shoot color images which are transferred to the computer in an RGB color space. Monochrome images today are made by manipulating a natively color image. This is completely opposite of where photography started. Color theory has become something that's thought about less since the images just come out in color.

Richard Keyes graduated from Art Center College of Design with a graphic design degree in 1987. After working in Palo Alto, California, designing corporate I.D. and annual reports, he returned to Southern California to work in a variety of studios before choosing a freelance career. As an independent designer Richard has worked for clients as diverse as Warner Brothers Records, Guess Jeans, the Los Angeles Housing Department and His Holiness the Dalai Lama. As a color consultant, his clients include Empire Berol, BIC and Avery Dennison. His teaching career started in 1988, with graphic design classes at Cal State L.A. Since then Richard has also taught at Valley Community College, UCLA Extension and has been teaching at Art Center College of Design since 1990, specializing in color theory, graphic design and narrative structure. Richard also teaches a workshop at Disney Studios.

In the visual arts, color theory is a body of practical guidance to color mixing and the visual impacts of specific color combination. There are also definitions (or categories) of colors based on the color wheel: primary color, secondary color and tertiary color. Although color theory principles first appeared in the writings of Leone Battista Alberti (c.1435) and the notebooks of Leonardo da Vinci (c.1490), a tradition of "colory theory" began in the 18th century, initially within a partisan controversy around Isaac Newton's theory of color (Opticks, 1704) and the nature of so-called primary colors. From there it developed as an independent artistic tradition with only superficial reference to colorimetry and vision science.
The foundations of pre-20th-century color theory were built around "pure" or ideal colors, characterized by sensory experiences rather than attributes of the physical world. This has led to a number of inaccuracies in traditional color theory principles that are not always remedied in modern formulations.[citation needed]

Color Theory is the musical alter ego of American singer-keyboardist-songwriter Brian Hazard. Hazard has released eight studio albums, four EPs, and one collection of demos to date. His eighth studio album The Sound was released on August 4, 2010.
Hazard, the sole member of Color Theory, began studying the piano at the relatively late age of thirteen. He took lessons on and off through his high school years, while playing piano in the school jazz band and mallet percussion in the drumline. In 1992, Hazard was awarded a Bachelor of Music degree in Piano Performance from California State University, Long Beach. The following year he enrolled in songwriting and recording classes at Golden West College, and began writing songs for the first Color Theory album, Sketches in Grey.
Sketches in Grey was a local success when it was released in 1994, quickly selling out the first pressing. But it wasn't until fledgling label A Different Drum included "Heart Like a Doll" on its first release, Rise! America's Synthpop Underground, that Color Theory was exposed to the small but dedicated modern synthpop scene.

Color theory is one of the most important aspects of art. Photography is no different. If you're interested in making fantastic images that stand out its a technique you'll need to get a handle on. The relationship between photographers and color theory is particularly interesting in that the approach to color has changed entirely over the history of making photographs.
In the early days of photography, images were produced in monochrome. It would still be a few years before the autochrome process became available. But even processes such as color gum bi-chromate or even autochrome for that matter, were more involved than basic monochrome photography. In the early days, the process was natively monochrome and color had to be approached and thought about completely differently.
Today in the digital age this is the complete opposite. Cameras natively shoot color images which are transferred to the computer in an RGB color space. Monochrome images today are made by manipulating a natively color image. This is completely opposite of where photography started. Color theory has become something that's thought about less since the images just come out in color.

After working in Palo Alto, California, designing corporate I.D. and annual reports, he returned to Southern California to work in a variety of studios before choosing a freelance career. As an independent designer Richard has worked for clients as diverse as Warner Brothers Records, Guess Jeans, the Los Angeles Housing Department and His Holiness the Dalai Lama. As a color consultant, his clients include Empire Berol, BIC and Avery Dennison. His teaching career started in 1988, with graphic design classes at Cal State L.A. Since then Richard has also taught at Valley Community College, UCLA Extension and has been teaching at Art Center College of Design since 1990, specializing in color theory, graphic design and narrative structure. Using Goethe's Theory of Colours (Zur Farbenlehre) as point of departure, Light Darkness and Colours takes us on a fascinating journey through the universe of colours. In 1704, Sir Isaac Newton published *Light and Refraction*, his study of the interactions between sunlight and prisms. Newton was, as a good scientist, intent on achieving objectivity, which meant studying sunlight in isolation. Using Goethe's Theory of Colours (Zur Farbenlehre) as point of departure, Light Darkness and Colours takes us on a fascinating journey through the universe of colours. In 1704, Sir Isaac Newton published *Light and Refraction*, his study of the interactions between sunlight and prisms. Newton was, as a good scientist, intent on achieving objectivity, which meant studying sunlight in isolation. He thought colours were contained solely in light, and found the spectrum he was looking for. When he reproduced this experiment, Goethe found another, hidden set of colours missed by Newton. Goethe found the hidden colours in the boundaries between light and darkness. He felt, as an artist, that one could not talk about light without including darkness. Calling it 'the light-darkness polarity', Goethe made this new scientific discovery using artistic methods in conjunction with science.
