The Chernobyl disaster (Ukrainian: Чорнобильська катастрофа, Chornobylska Katastrofa -- Chornobyl Catastrophe) was a catastrophic nuclear accident that occurred on 26 April 1986 at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant in Ukraine (then officially Ukrainian SSR), which was under the direct jurisdiction of the central authorities of the Soviet Union. An explosion and fire released large quantities of radioactive particles into the atmosphere, which spread over much of Western USSR and Europe.
The Chernobyl disaster is widely considered to have been the worst nuclear power plant accident in history, and is one of only two classified as a level 7 event on the International Nuclear Event Scale (the other being the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster in 2011). The battle to contain the contamination and avert a greater catastrophe ultimately involved over 500,000 workers and cost an estimated 18 billion rubles. The official Soviet casualty count of 31 deaths has been disputed, and long-term effects such as cancers and deformities are still being accounted for.
It has been 30 years since the Chernobyl disaster - the worst nuclear catastrophe in human history.
Back in 1986, Yuriy Andreyev worked at the Chernobyl nuclear plant and was one of the engineers who helped contain the fallout of the accident.
In 2012 he gave his account of the events to BBC Ukrainian, which have been animated to tell the full story.

Thirty years after the worst nuclear accident in history, Chernobyl has become a tourist attraction. Tens of thousands of people are believed to have died prematurely from the catastrophe which spread a radioactive cloud over Europe in 1986, but last year 17,000 people visited the so-called exclusion zone anyway.
VICE News sent Simon Ostrovsky to Chernobyl to find out just how safe it is to go there.

El accidente de Chernóbil fue un accidente nuclear sucedido en la central nuclear de Chernóbil (Ucrania) el 26 de abril de 1986. Considerado, junto con el Accidente nuclear de Fukushima I en Japón de 2011, como el más grave en la Escala Internacional de Accidentes Nucleares (accidente mayor, nivel 7). Se considera uno de los mayores desastres medioambientales de la historia.
Aquel día, durante una prueba en la que se simulaba un corte de suministro eléctrico, un aumento súbito de potencia en el reactor 4 de esta central nuclear, produjo el sobrecalentamiento del núcleo del reactor nuclear, lo que terminó provocando la explosión del hidrógeno acumulado en su interior. La cantidad de dióxido de uranio, carburo de boro, óxido de europio, erbio, aleaciones de circonio y grafito expulsados, materiales radiactivos y/o tóxicos que se estimó fue unas 500 veces mayor que el liberado por la bomba atómica arrojada en Hiroshima en 1945, causó directamente la muerte de 31 personas y forzó al gobierno de la Unión Soviética a la evacuación de 116 000 personas provocando una alarma internacional al detectarse radiactividad en, al menos, 13 países de Europa central y oriental.
Después del accidente, se inició un proceso masivo de descontaminación, contención y mitigación que desempeñaron aproximadamente 600 000 personas denominadas liquidadores en las zonas circundantes al lugar del accidente y se aisló un área de 30 km de radio alrededor de la central nuclear conocida como Zona de alienación, que sigue aún vigente. Solo una pequeña parte de los liquidadores se vieron expuestos a altos índices de radiactividad. Los trabajos de contención sobre el reactor afectado evitaron una segunda explosión de consecuencias dramáticas que podría haber dejado inhabitable a toda Europa.
Dos personas, empleadas de la planta, murieron como consecuencia directa de la explosión esa misma noche y 31 en los tres meses siguientes. Mil personas recibieron grandes dosis de radiación durante el primer día después del accidente, 200.000 personas recibieron alrededor de 100 mSv, 20.000 cerca de 250 mSv y algunos 500 mSv. En total, 600.000 personas recibieron dosis de radiación por los trabajos de descontaminación posteriores al accidente. 5.000.000 de personas vivieron en áreas contaminadas y 400.000 en áreas gravemente contaminadas, hasta hoy no existen trabajos concluyentes sobre la incidencia real, y no teórica, de este accidente en la mortalidad poblacional.
Tras prolongadas negociaciones con el gobierno ucraniano, la comunidad internacional financió los costes del cierre definitivo de la central, completado en diciembre de 2000. Inmediatamente después del accidente se construyó un "sarcófago", para aislar el interior del exterior, que se ha visto degradado en el tiempo por diversos fenómenos naturales por lo que corre riesgo de desplomarse. Desde 2004 se lleva a cabo la construcción de un nuevo sarcófago para el reactor. El resto de reactores de la central están cerrados.

"Beautiful Ghost: A Filmmaker's Look at Chernobyl" attempts to capture the location's eerie beauty and convey the feelings the Welzels felt there. "Yes it's scary, it's a little eerie, but at the same time it was very peaceful," Kseniya says.

The disaster began during a systems test on Saturday, 26 April 1986 at reactor number four of the Chernobyl plant, which is near the city of Prypiat and in close proximity to the administrative border with Belarus and Dnieper river. There was a sudden power output surge, and when an emergency shutdown was attempted, a more extreme spike in power output occurred, which led to a reactor vessel rupture and a series of explosions. These events exposed the graphite moderator of the reactor to air, causing it to ignite. The resulting fire sent a plume of highly radioactive smoke fallout into the atmosphere and over an extensive geographical area, including Pripyat. The plume drifted over large parts of the western Soviet Union and Europe. From 1986 to 2000, 350,400 people were evacuated and resettled from the most severely contaminated areas of Belarus, Russia, and Ukraine. According to official post-Soviet data, about 60% of the fallout landed in Belarus.

But one depends on Paul winning over Gregg, the obnoxious, racist site manager of the dodgy Hag Moor Estate; and the other, a potentially lucrative maintenance contract at the luxury private Willows estate, seems to have been sewn up already by the King brothers. As Terry finishes up at The Golden Hours Retirement Home and Dino is dispatched to clean up after his last job after complaints from the tyrannical Roger Forsyth, Paul puts his best efforts into securing the company's future. Terry's brother Ed has just got a job as security guard at the Willows and Paul pays him a visit, hoping he can help him get his foot in the door. He also persuades Sheila to accompany him on a visit to the local Indian restaurant to wine and dine Gregg, but he's unable to ignore Gregg's loathsome behaviour and the evening ends in disaster. With the cheque from Golden Hours bouncing, Dino distracted by a burgeoning relationship with Roger's downtrodden wife Marjorie, and Gregg last seen face-down in a plate of curry, is it all over for A to Z Decorators?

Tens of thousands of people are believed to have died prematurely from the catastrophe which spread a radioactive cloud over Europe in 1986, but last year 17,000 people visited the so-called exclusion zone anyway.

El accidente de Chernóbil fue un accidente nuclear sucedido en la central nuclear de Chernóbil (Ucrania) el 26 de abril de 1986. Considerado, junto con el Accidente nuclear de Fukushima I en Japón de 2011, como el más grave en la Escala Internacional de Accidentes Nucleares (accidente mayor, nivel 7). Se considera uno de los mayores desastres medioambientales de la historia.
Aquel día, durante una prueba en la que se simulaba un corte de suministro eléctrico, un aumento súbito de potencia en el reactor 4 de esta central nuclear, produjo el sobrecalentamiento del núcleo del reactor nuclear, lo que terminó provocando la explosión del hidrógeno acumulado en su interior. La cantidad de dióxido de uranio, carburo de boro, óxido de europio, erbio, aleaciones de circonio y grafito expulsados, materiales radiactivos y/o tóxicos que se estimó fue unas 500 veces mayor que el liberado por la bomba atómica arrojada en Hiroshima en 1945, causó directamente la muerte de 31 personas y forzó al gobierno de la Unión Soviética a la evacuación de 116 000 personas provocando una alarma internacional al detectarse radiactividad en, al menos, 13 países de Europa central y oriental.
Después del accidente, se inició un proceso masivo de descontaminación, contención y mitigación que desempeñaron aproximadamente 600 000 personas denominadas liquidadores en las zonas circundantes al lugar del accidente y se aisló un área de 30 km de radio alrededor de la central nuclear conocida como Zona de alienación, que sigue aún vigente. Solo una pequeña parte de los liquidadores se vieron expuestos a altos índices de radiactividad. Los trabajos de contención sobre el reactor afectado evitaron una segunda explosión de consecuencias dramáticas que podría haber dejado inhabitable a toda Europa.
Dos personas, empleadas de la planta, murieron como consecuencia directa de la explosión esa misma noche y 31 en los tres meses siguientes. Mil personas recibieron grandes dosis de radiación durante el primer día después del accidente, 200.000 personas recibieron alrededor de 100 mSv, 20.000 cerca de 250 mSv y algunos 500 mSv. En total, 600.000 personas recibieron dosis de radiación por los trabajos de descontaminación posteriores al accidente. 5.000.000 de personas vivieron en áreas contaminadas y 400.000 en áreas gravemente contaminadas, hasta hoy no existen trabajos concluyentes sobre la incidencia real, y no teórica, de este accidente en la mortalidad poblacional.
Tras prolongadas negociaciones con el gobierno ucraniano, la comunidad internacional financió los costes del cierre definitivo de la central, completado en diciembre de 2000. Inmediatamente después del accidente se construyó un "sarcófago", para aislar el interior del exterior, que se ha visto degradado en el tiempo por diversos fenómenos naturales por lo que corre riesgo de desplomarse. Using a real-time split-screen format reminiscent of the hit series, 24, this programme examines the 60 critical minutes leading up to the explosion at the power station on 26th April 1986.
Each minute unfolds narrating the events from the perspectives of key characters involved including Chernobyl's deputy chief engineer and his staff in the control room as well as innocent bystanders, the wife of one of Chernobyl's workers and two fishermen working in Chernobyl's warm waste waters.

The Chernobyl disaster (Ukrainian: Чорнобильська катастрофа, Chornobylska Katastrofa -- Chornobyl Catastrophe) was a catastrophic nuclear accident that occurred on 26 April 1986 at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant in Ukraine (then officially Ukrainian SSR), which was under the direct jurisdiction of the central authorities of the Soviet Union. An explosion and fire released large quantities of radioactive particles into the atmosphere, which spread over much of Western USSR and Europe.
The Chernobyl disaster is widely considered to have been the worst nuclear power plant accident in history, and is one of only two classified as a level 7 event on the International Nuclear Event Scale (the other being the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster in 2011) The battle to contain the contamination and avert a greater catastrophe ultimately involved over 500,000 workers and cost an estimated 18 billion rubles. The official Soviet casualty count of 31 deaths has been disputed, and long-term effects such as cancers and deformities are still being accounted for.

The Chernobyl disaster (Ukrainian: Чорнобильська катастрофа, Chornobylska Katastrofa -- Chornobyl Catastrophe) was a catastrophic nuclear accident that occurred on 26 April 1986 at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant in Ukraine (then officially Ukrainian SSR), which was under the direct jurisdiction of the central authorities of the Soviet Union. An explosion and fire released large quantities of radioactive particles into the atmosphere, which spread over much of Western USSR and Europe.
The Chernobyl disaster is widely considered to have been the worst nuclear power plant accident in history, and is one of only two classified as a level 7 event on the International Nuclear Event Scale (the other being the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster in 2011) The battle to contain the contamination and avert a greater catastrophe ultimately involved over 500,000 workers and cost an estimated 18 billion rubles. The official Soviet casualty count of 31 deaths has been disputed, and long-term effects such as cancers and deformities are still being accounted for.

Meses después de la explosión, un sarcófago de hormigón fue construido sobre el reactor 4 para contener el material radiactivo.
Años después, la radiación aun está presente. Una reciente investigación mostró que la leche de las granjas cercanas contenía un isótopo radioactivo 10 veces superior al límite permitido.

The Chernobyl disaster remains the only level 7 incident on the international Nuclear Event Scale (INES) making it the biggest man-made disaster of all time
The disaster released at least 100 times more radiation than the atom bombs dropped on Nagasaki and Hiroshima.
Nuclear rain from the disaster fell as far away as Ireland
Not surprisingly, the accident has caused the Soviet Union, the Russian Federation, and Ukraine hundreds of billions of dollars.

From the age of 10, Alla Karytka, of Belarus, has been travelling to the Chateauguay Valley each summer. A survivor of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster, Alla, who is now 28, is currently enrolled as an international student in an industrial drafting program in Montreal. To help cover her fees, Pat Walsh and her Canadian family are organizing a blowout benefit concert featuring a lineup of Valley favourites on February 27, at Grove Hall in Huntingdon at 8 pm. The headliner for the event is the crowd pleasing Stephen Barry Band, which will be accompanied by a collection of local musicians with wide-reaching reputations including John Speed, Daniel McKell and Christopher Pennington. Travel with us to the Chernobyl plant to commemorate this event.
On April 26, 1986, a radioactive release 10 times bigger than the nuclear bomb on Hiroshima occurred at the Chernobyl nuclear power station inside the then Soviet Union. It would go down in history as one of the worst disasters of its kind.
The explosion blasted radioactive gas and dust into the air, and winds carried it across central and southern Europe. Thirty-one people died in the accident, and countless lives have been affected long-term by the exposure to radiation.
Around 350,000 people were forced to evacuate their homes in the "Nuclear Exclusion Zone", the area in a 19-mile radius around the plant. The town hardest hit was Pripyat, Ukraine — it was quickly abandoned and remains empty to this day.

A little over an hour's drive north (130km) of the city of Kiev is one of the most talked about places, and probably the most controversial tourist attraction in the Ukraine. Amidst an empty, stark, and abandoned landscape the site of Chernobyl sits here.Now that radiation levels have decreased to allow guided tours, you can safely venture forth from the comfort of your rented Kiev apartment or hotel in Kiev to follow in the steps of the many thousands of visitors from all over the world who have visited the site since it was deemed safe to reopen in 2002.
Protected by thick walls, the viewing area allows visitors clear sight of the doomed sarcophagus. This has become a form of modern icon a little like the Empire State building or Windsor Castle, due in the main to having being seen by millions of people as portrayed in newspapers/ magazines, or when the terrifying news of the explosion was reported worldwide by television crews.
20 years since reactor number 4 exploded, spending a few hours near Chernobyl is actually very safe. Much of the region records only slightly elevated levels of radiation - about 22 micro-roentgens, as opposed to the usual 14.
Around the actual reactor, the relative hot spots are diligently monitored on a regular basis, and have posed no risk to human life. National Health Protection agencies from the UK, Europe, and USA all now agree that visitors will receive no more radiation during a visit to Chernobyl than that experienced whilst travelling on a transatlantic flight! The one thing all visitors are told to avoid doing, however, is to avoid eating any food grown within the zone. Therefore, all tours supply lunch for their groups in the form of fresh food brought with them from Kiev.
Each guide carries a Geiger counter, and they are intimately aware of exactly where they can and cannot take their tour groups, plus everyone visiting is automatically screened for radiation levels before they leave the zone.
Close by is the town of Pripyat, once home to 47,000 nuclear workers and their families, and now an atomic-era Pompeii. Trees thrust through the empty shells of hotels, restaurants and bars, and the huge football stadium is stark and overgrown.
In the local school, classrooms lie with open books and the detritus of lives dramatically interrupted by evacuation - it reminds one of being aboard a large land-locked Maria Celeste.
There are still some people living in the exclusion zone. They number around 350, most of them elderly residents. Many were moved out to Kiev accommodation after the accident, but all missed their homes and decided en-mass to return. They live a normal life growing their vegetables, and are seemingly unperturbed by the radiation.
As you climb back into your tour bus ready to return to the warmth of your cosy Kiev apartment, the absolute guarantee has to be that your trip to Chernobyl will have been a truly unique and fascinating experience, one you can tell friends and family about for many years to come.

From the age of 10, Alla Karytka, of Belarus, has been travelling to the Chateauguay Valley each summer. A survivor of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster, Alla, who is now 28, is currently enrolled as an international student in an industrial drafting program in Montreal. To help cover her fees, Pat Walsh and her Canadian family are organizing a blowout benefit concert featuring a lineup of Valley favourites on February 27, at Grove Hall in Huntingdon at 8 pm.
The headliner for the event is the crowd pleasing Stephen Barry Band, which will be accompanied by a collection of local musicians with wide-reaching reputations including John Speed, Daniel McKell and Christopher Pennington. There will be a
number of prizes and giveaways throughout the evening and all are invited to bring their dancing shoes.
A terrible legacy
Alla is from Chaussy, located about 350 kilometres from Chernobyl in Ukraine. 30 years ago this April, reactor number four at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant experienced a catastrophic surge in power that led to multiple explosions in its core. A
radioactive plume was released into the atmosphere and the subsequent fire, which burned for days, only increased the
emission of radioactive particles. A nuclear cloud formed and due to wind conditions at the time settled over neighbouring Belarus, where around 70% of the fallout eventually landed. Over 800,000 children were affected in Belarus, including Karytka and
several others who stayed with Valley families over several summers in the late 1990s and early 2000s as a respite from the daily exposure to unsafe levels of radiation that to this day plague
the country and its citizens.
Alla spent the first five years of her life in and out of hospital, where she was treated for respiratory problems caused by the radiation. When she first came to Quebec, she was losing her hair due to radiation poisoning. It did not grow back until she was 16 years old. Considered a Chernobyl survivor, she has returned to Canada to further her education – an option that is simply not a possibility in Belarus.
A beautiful friendship
“With a Canadian education, Alla will have a chance at a better life,” says event organizer Pat Walsh, who has been fortunate enough to share in Alla’s story since they met back in 1997. Brought together by the Canadian Relief Fund for Chernobyl Victims in Belarus, the pair clicked during Alla’s first visit, and for 17 years she has returned each summer to her second home in Elgin. Having always considered Alla as part of her family, Pat is extremely proud of Alla’s decision to return to Canada to further her education. So much so, she is spearheading this fundraiser and reaching out to the community for support, as she is unable to cover the cost of tuition alone.
