SARASOTA - Lionfish were introduced in coastal South Florida about 30 years ago. It is not known for sure how this happened but aquarium release or ballast water discharge are the likely culprits. As widely reported lately, the exotic invasive species have exploded throughout the Caribbean, Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico ... xThey have no significant predators in our coastal waters ... xAre not aggressive but have 18 venomous spines for defense ... ....
