It is believed between 300 to 400 people have been injured and two firefighters are said to be missing.
The initial blast was followed by a second even bigger blast, sending out a shock wave that shattered windows and sent debris into the air.
"
All of a sudden there was a flash of big red light, and a big sound.
And 10 seconds afterwards, there was a big wave," an online user told the
South China Morning Post.
At least 60 fire trucks have responded to the incident, with word the blasts were felt several kilometres away.

"
The hospital cannot count how many patients we have received – there are too many of them and many of them have burn injuries," a doctor told the
Beijing News.
Photos posted on Chinese social network Weibo showed people in the street apparently covered in blood, while others carried children covered in blankets to safety, though the veracity of the pictures could not immediately be confirmed.
