Baker

A baker is someone who bakes and sells bread, Cakes and similar foods may also be produced, as the traditional boundaries between what is produced by a baker as opposed to a pastry chef have blurred in recent decades. The place where a baker works is called a bakery.

The first group of people to bake bread were ancient Egyptians, around 8000 BC. During the Middle Ages it was common for each landlord to have a bakery, which was actually a public oven; Housewives would bring dough that they had prepared to the baker, who would tend the oven and bake them into bread. As time went on, bakers would also sell their own goods, and in that some bakers acted dishonestly, tricks emerged: for example, a baker would have trap door(s) in the oven or other obscured areas, that would allow a hidden small boy or other apprentice to take off some of the dough brought in for baking. Then the dishonest baker would sell bread made with the stolen dough as their own. This practice and others eventually lead to the famous regulation known as Assize of Bread and Ale, which prescribed harsh penalties for bakers that were found cheating their clients or customers. As a safeguard against cheating, under-filled orders, or any appearance of impropriety, bakers commonly began to throw in one more loaf of bread; this tradition now exists in the phrase "baker's dozen", which is 13.

For others, such as Duval, collaboration with their Nazi jailers is the route to an easier life. The men find solace in the company of Father Sebastian, a priest who was also in the army. He counsels them wisely and in the case of Paul, gives him strength to face the daily challenge of simply living. When Paul gets an opportunity however, he helps his fellow prisoners escape. When they liberate a village, they all realize that there is only one option left for them and the villagers.

Later, she and her lawyer friends drop in at the club where William is singing, and she sees William getting vamped by one of the girl entertainers, gets sore and walks out..after insulting William. And..so they part and William gets an apartment and then a girl is found dead in his apartment, having accidentally strangled herself while drunk. But the law isn't buying that, either, and William goes on trial for his life...and Ann is his defense attorney. Ann's defense is that it was all her fault for being so career-minded and not providing William with the home-life he deserves...and the jury buys her 1938 sell-out. THey re-unite and Ann becomes Blondie Bumstead.

Because, by god, we were all rooting for Dave Chappelle's Prince to kick ass in perhaps the greatest pickup game ever televised. The skit was ridiculous. Wrong, probably, for its digs at Prince's androgyny and quirkiness, for mocking a man who dared to be different and was damn good at it. Distilling The Revolution to perpetrators of "fruity picks" feels ... problematic in today's age. But the lines live forever, part of the Prince legacy whether he liked it or not. Many a pickup (basketball) artist has pulled a quote from the skit. "Game: blouses." "Why don't you purify yourself in the waters of Lake Minnetonka?" Lines delivered in a beautiful, befitting stoicism. And hilarious. And, yes, a lampoon. But Prince would later say in a 2004 interview about the skit, "I loved it. That's a true story, by the way." According to Prince, there were definitely pancakes. He just didn't make them. On a day when Prince nostalgia will rain down, yes, in purple streaks, this too belongs to the canon. And yes, admittedly, it's a way for those of us in sports media to balance the gravedance that is content surrounding a death; we want a piece, transparently, because it helps us cope and helps our bottom line and helps us explain how a transcendent artist touched every facet of this world. Even sports. Even when he wasn't actually present.

All these individuals are legendary jazz icons with very successful solo careers. The ensemble includes Herbie Mann, Pepper Adams, Kenny Burrell, Paul Chambers, Connie Kay and Philly Joe Jones. All these artists turn in stellar performances. However, I have to single out Pepper Adams on baritone sax who really shines on these selections. Jay Bulger catches up with the irascible Cream drummer Ginger Baker at his ranch in South Africa. He reflects on his sixty-year career that led him to sellout stadium concerts. HE’S long had a reputation for making even an infamous rock curmudgeon like Lou Reed come across like someone’s avuncular uncle, so I wasn’t relishing the prospect of an early morning phone chat with drumming legend Ginger Baker. It was a feeling made worse by my foolishly having read other journalists’ previous run-ins with the man who, during his time in ’60s supergroup Cream, laid down the polyrhythmic beat to some of the most famous rock songs ever penned.And, as I quickly found out, choosing to wax lyrical about how much I loved Sunshine Of Your Love or Eric Clapton’s guitar playing on White Room wasn’t the best way of getting him to warm to me. “Oh God, Cream’s a bloody albatross around my neck,” mutters the 72-year-old musical veteran who, in true septuagenarian fashion, duly informs me he’ll be 73 in a few weeks. And the more I talk to the superannuated South Londoner – who, having somehow resembled old man Steptoe since his 30s has now come to look curiously ageless – about the band which has brought him the most fame and adulation the less it seems like a good idea. “Cream wasn’t even rock and roll, you know,” he snorts. “I mean, 80% of it was total improvisation, and what’s another word for improvised music?” ‘Er, jazz?’ I squeak. “Exactly, jazz,” he adds, slowly thawing. “In fact, I don’t think we ever played any song the same way twice, that’s how together we were on stage. “Don’t get me wrong though, I’m proud of everything we did – a lot of it was of an incredibly high standard, much higher than any other pop group achieved,” adds Baker. It’s odd then that he’s so circumspect about giving it pride of place on his CV. “The main problem is that because of Cream people tend to think I’m very rich, but I’m not,” he sighs, taking a long, hard drag on a cigarette. “I’m actually really struggling financially because I’ve managed to outlive all the money we made and now I’ve got to work again. “There’s no fortune stashed away for me in some Swiss bank unfortunately, so any retirement plans ain’t happening quite yet.” By his own admittance then, Ginger Baker’s Jazz Confusion – the incredible outfit he’ll be debuting at Brecon Jazz tonight, featuring James Brown’s sax man Peewee Ellis, bassist Alec Dankworth, and African percussionist Abass Dodoo – just seems like a means to an end for the star. “Would I be doing it if I didn’t have to? Hmm, dunno – I do enjoy it though because jazz is exactly my thing,” says Baker. I certainly don’t want to go back to playing rock and roll and all that stuff, unless I was offered some really lucrative deal. “It’s good though in a way, I feel like a kid having to prove himself again.” Briefly he recalls his 16-year-old self in 1956, being dared by friends at a party to sit behind a drum kit for the first time. “I just discovered I could play – had absolutely no idea how, I just could,” he chuckles throatily.
