Tai O is a fishing village in Hong Kong located in the western region of Lantau Island. You can find lots of street food, dry seafood and desert here. A nice walk around at the fishing village you get to see lots of older fishing boats & Stilt houses (pang uk). Tai O once was famous for their Salt Industry. Human settlement date back about three centuries old.

Lantau Island (also Lantao Island; Chinese: 大嶼山), based on the old local name of Lantau Peak (simplified Chinese: 烂头; traditional Chinese: 爛頭; pinyin: Làntóu; lit. Ragged Head), is the largest island in Hong Kong, located at the mouth of the Pearl River. Administratively, most of Lantau Island is part of the Islands District of Hong Kong. A small northeastern portion of the island is located in the Tsuen Wan District.
Originally the site of fishing villages, the island has been developed in recent years with the construction of Tung Chung New Town on its north-western coast and the completion of several major infrastructure projects, including Lantau Link (1997), Hong Kong International Airport (1998), Hong Kong Disneyland (2005) and Ngong Ping 360 (2006).
With a land mass of 147.16 square kilometres (56.82 sq mi), it is the largest island in Hong Kong, almost twice the size of Hong Kong Island.
Lantau Island primarily consists of mountainous terrain. Lantau Peak (934 m) is the highest point of the island. It is the second highest in Hong Kong, after Tai Mo Shan, and is almost twice the height of Victoria Peak. Other mountains include Sunset Peak (869 m), Lin Fa Shan (766 m), Nei Lak Shan (751 m) and Yi Tung Shan (747 m).

Hong Kong (China) Travel - Lantau Island
A pictureseque island that has Asia's tallest outdoor seated buddha and an ancient monastery. We are in Lantau, the largest island in Hong Kong and one of my most favorite. Lantau Island is famous for beautiful scenery, but its main attraction is the Big Buddha and that is where we are headed right now. On the way we can see the Big Buddha in the distance. We are not there yet, we have to climb these steep steps to get to the top. The statue we see is 34 meters high, and Asia's tallest outdoor seated Buddha. There are other smaller statues around here, and a fantastic view of the surroundings. Underneath the Big Buddha is an exhibition hall and a museum, but no cameras are allowed. We are at the entrance of the Po Lin Monastery, which was built in 1970. Inside the monastery are a numb... -

A pictureseque island that has Asia's tallest outdoor seated buddha and an ancient monastery.
We are in Lantau, the largest island in Hong Kong and one of my most favorite. Lantau Island is famous for beautiful scenery, but its main attraction is the Big Buddha and that is where we are headed right now. On the way we can see the Big Buddha in the distance. We are not there yet, we have to climb these steep steps to get to the top. The statue we see is 34 meters high, and Asia's tallest outdoor seated Buddha. There are other smaller statues around here, and a fantastic view of the surroundings.
Underneath the Big Buddha is an exhibition hall and a museum, but no cameras are allowed. We are at the entrance of the Po Lin Monastery, which was built in 1970. Inside the monastery are a number of beautiful shrines and figures of gods. Fresh fruit is a common offering to the gods. This is the Po Lin monastery canteen, where they serve vegetarian meals only. People are lighting joss sticks here, which is part of the Buddhist religion. This is Rosanna Wilcox, showing you Hong Kong.
