Mission Impossible: Constructing Charles Babbage's Analytical Engine
Given by Doron Swade on May 8th at Dartmouth College
Computing is widely viewed as a phenomenon of the electronic age. The mechanical prehistory of computing tends to be seen as a cozy gas-lit back-story to the undoubted triumphs of modernity, but a past to which the electronic computer owes little. So it perhaps surprising to claim that the core ideas in the realisation of the modern computer emerged explicitly in the 19th century in the designs for vast automatic calculating engines conceived by the English mathematician Charles Babbage, and in the work of Ada Lovelace, daughter of Lord Byron. Babbage's work has been revisited in the modern era: his massive Difference Engine No. 2, designed in the late 1840s but unbuilt in his lifetime, was completed in 2002, and a project is now underway to construct for the first time his legendary Analytical Engine, the first design for a full-fledged, automatic, programmable, digital computing machine. This presentation reviews Babbage's pioneering work on automatic computing, locates his work in its historical context, and describes the scale, scope and planned outcomes for the construction of the Analytical Engine.

Dr. Geordie Rose is a founder and Chief Technology Officer at D-Wave Computers. I met Geordie at the IdeaCity conference in Toronto where he made an impassioned presentation about D-Wave and quantum computing. Needless to say, as soon as Dr. Rose stoped speaking I rushed to ask him for an interview. As it turns out Geordie is already a fan of Singularity 1 on 1 and isntantly said that he would be happy to do it.
As a father of three kids and the CTO of a trail-blazing quantum computing company, Dr. Rose is a very busy person. Yet somehow he was generous beyond measure in giving me two full hours for an interview with the apparent desire to address as many of mine and the audience's questions as possible.
During our conversation with Geordie Rose we cover a variety of interesting topics such as: how wrestling competitively created an opportunity for him to discover Quantum Mechanics; why he decided to become an entrepreneur building computers at the edge of science and technology; what the name D-wave stands for; what is a quantum computer; why fabrication tech is the greatest limiting factor towards commoditizing quantum computing; hardware specs and interesting details around Vesuvius - D-Wave's latest model, and the kinds of problems it can compute; Rose's Law as the quantum computer version of Moore's Law; how D-wave resolves the de-coherence/interference problem; the traditional von Neumann architecture behind classical computer design and why D-Wave had to move beyond it; Vesuvius' computational power as compared to similarly priced classical super-computers and the inherent difficulties in accurate bench-marking; Eric Ladizinski's qubit and the velodrome metaphor used to describe it; the skepticism among numerous scientists as to whether D-Wave really makes quantum computers or not; whether Geordie feels occasionally like Charles Babbage trying to build his difference engine; his prediction that quantum computers will help us create AI by 2029; whether the brain is more like a classical or quantum computer; how you can apply for programming time on the two D-wave quantum computers; his take on the technological singularity...

The title says it all really, from The Brit who invented the computer to a very well known vegetable that is good for you, but can lead to sickness if overindulged in, so the equation I draw between The NBN & the ever growing criticisms of it are plain to see.
The NBN sounds & looks very flashy & a tool for the betterment of Australia, but that can be said for many other Internet delivery systems available right now & yet to be invented, invented in the not too distant future too !
I will not be boring the You Tube viewers that care to read my thoughts here with the multitude of alternatives to The NBN but it is a given to know they are there & are far more cost affective than this potential white elephant, also if any of you wish to find out more about NBN alternatives, the net is a great place to start of course.
This Big Don You Tube video starts with the much lorded 2007 version of Kevin Rudd doing his sales pitch to the long suffering Aussie voters regarding The 2007 ALP version of The NBN, but before that I have included a most appropriate audio grab from the 1970 movie "Waterloo" who's director Dino De Laurentiis passed away on 10th. November 2010. I think Kevin Rudd would have made an interesting Napoleon Bonaparte as they both ended up "Meeting Their Waterloo !" Many people both inside The ALP & many outside it, feel as Michel Ney, Marshal Of France did when those words were uttered to the great man.
We then move onto the current growing unease over the folly of The NBN with 3AW's Neil Mitchell & 2GB's Jason Morrison talking with Sunrise's Kochie which was TX'ed 16/11/2010. Then it's onto one of my favorite ALP Men, The Doyen Of Teflon Graham "Richo" Richardson, who features in another of Big Don's You Tube videos & a link is given at the end of this piece. Watch it all as it's great fun & features a couple of other interesting fellows too ! Richo pulls no punches about the diabolical state his party is in these days & as an old ALP numbers man it is good to see he has not lost his antenna as to the prevailing views & thoughts of the voter. I recall fondly our talk back chats when Richo was a "Shock Jock" on Sydney's Radio 2GB some years ago & he really does have a feel for the national barometer, both then & now.
We then move to another grab from Seven's Sunrise where David Koch exposes The Greens media spin that toppled somewhat prior to Election 2010. As with The ALP The Greens can not handle media exposure that is not to their liking & when someone with balls like Kochie takes them on their vulnerability is naked for all to see, we need more media types like Kochie that says it like it is ! Oh & by the way, before some say that Big Don is in the pay of Network Seven or alike, hold your horses....I say it like it is too & am beholden to no member of the fourth estate anywhere ! Just wanted to make that clear as some have tried to give me a serve over this issue in the past & lately, please don't try to serve it up to me, as you will get a return serve like no other, but have a go anyway, I love it ! Anyway with that out of the way, kick back & enjoy this video...I know I enjoyed editing & viewing it. That's for sure !!!
A little footnote to the passing of Dino De Laurentiis, I recently spoke to a lovely lady @ The TCN Lair & she informed me that although Waterloo is still in their library, Channel 9's rights to show the film have long since expired, it would be nice if that movie was given a dusting off for many discerning viewers to once again view.

Charles Babbage, FRS (26 December 1791 – 18 October 1871) was an English mathematician, philosopher, inventor and mechanical engineer who originated the concept of a programmable computer. Considered a "father of the computer", Babbage is credited with inventing the first mechanical computer that eventually led to more complex designs.
Parts of his uncompleted mechanisms are on display in the London Science Museum. In 1991, a perfectly functioning difference engine was constructed from Babbage's original plans. Built to tolerances achievable in the 19th century, the success of the finished engine indicated that Babbage's machine would have worked. Nine years later, the Science Museum completed the printer Babbage had designed for the difference engine.
Babbage's birthplace is disputed, but he was most likely born at 44 Crosby Row, Walworth Road, London, England. A blue plaque on the junction of Larcom Street and Walworth Road commemorates the event.
His date of birth was given in his obituary in The Times as 26 December 1792. However after the obituary appeared, a nephew wrote to say that Charles Babbage was born one year earlier, in 1791. The parish register of St. Mary's Newington, London, shows that Babbage was baptised on 6 January 1792, supporting a birth year of 1791.

The title says it all really, from The Brit who invented the computer to a very well known vegetable that is good for you, but can lead to sickness if overindulged in, so the equation I draw between The NBN & the ever growing criticisms of it are plain to see. The NBN sounds & looks very flashy & a tool for the betterment of Australia, but that can be said for many other Internet delivery systems available right now & yet to be invented, invented in the not too distant future too ! So it perhaps surprising to claim that the core ideas in the realisation of the modern computer emerged explicitly in the 19th century in the designs for vast automatic calculating engines conceived by the English mathematician Charles Babbage, and in the work of Ada Lovelace, daughter of Lord Byron. Babbage's work has been revisited in the modern era: his massive Difference Engine No. 2, designed in the late 1840s but unbuilt in his lifetime, was completed in 2002, and a project is now underway to construct for the first time his legendary Analytical Engine, the first design for a full-fledged, automatic, programmable, digital computing machine. This presentation reviews Babbage's pioneering work on automatic computing, locates his work in its historical context, and describes the scale, scope and planned outcomes for the construction of the Analytical Engine.

This Big Don You Tube video starts with the much lorded 2007 version of Kevin Rudd doing his sales pitch to the long suffering Aussie voters regarding The 2007 ALP version of The NBN, but before that I have included a most appropriate audio grab from the 1970 movie "Waterloo" who's director Dino De Laurentiis passed away on 10th. November 2010. I think Kevin Rudd would have made an interesting Napoleon Bonaparte as they both ended up "Meeting Their Waterloo !" Many people both inside The ALP & many outside it, feel as Michel Ney, Marshal Of France did when those words were uttered to the great man.
We then move onto the current growing unease over the folly of The NBN with 3AW's Neil Mitchell & 2GB's Jason Morrison talking with Sunrise's Kochie which was TX'ed 16/11/2010. Then it's onto one of my favorite ALP Men, The Doyen Of Teflon Graham "Richo" Richardson, who features in another of Big Don's You Tube videos & a link is given at the end of this piece. Watch it all as it's great fun & features a couple of other interesting fellows too ! Richo pulls no punches about the diabolical state his party is in these days & as an old ALP numbers man it is good to see he has not lost his antenna as to the prevailing views & thoughts of the voter. I recall fondly our talk back chats when Richo was a "Shock Jock" on Sydney's Radio 2GB some years ago & he really does have a feel for the national barometer, both then & now.
We then move to another grab from Seven's Sunrise where David Koch exposes The Greens media spin that toppled somewhat prior to Election 2010. As with The ALP The Greens can not handle media exposure that is not to their liking & when someone with balls like Kochie takes them on their vulnerability is naked for all to see, we need more media types like Kochie that says it like it is ! Oh & by the way, before some say that Big Don is in the pay of Network Seven or alike, hold your horses....I say it like it is too & am beholden to no member of the fourth estate anywhere ! Just wanted to make that clear as some have tried to give me a serve over this issue in the past & lately, please don't try to serve it up to me, as you will get a return serve like no other, but have a go anyway, I love it ! Anyway with that out of the way, kick back & enjoy this video...I know I enjoyed editing & viewing it. That's for sure !!!
A little footnote to the passing of Dino De Laurentiis, I recently spoke to a lovely lady @ The TCN Lair & she informed me that although Waterloo is still in their library, Channel 9's rights to show the film have long since expired, it would be nice if that movie was given a dusting off for many discerning viewers to once again view.

A computer is a programmable machine designed to sequentially and automatically carry out a sequence of arithmetic or logical operations. The particular sequence of operations can be changed readily, allowing the computer to solve more than one kind of problem. In 1837, Charles Babbage was the first to conceptualize and design a fully programmable mechanical computer, his analytical engine. Konrad Zuse's Z3 (1941) was the first working machine featuring binary arithmetic, including floating point arithmetic and a measure of programmability. In London, during the summer of 1821, Charles Babbage, inventor and mathematician, is poring over a set of astronomical tables calculated by hand. Finding error after error he finally exclaims 'I wish to God these calculations had been executed by steam'. His appeal to machinery, in one of the most resonant utterances of the 19th century, was the start of a new era of automatic computation.
It was not only the grindingly tedious labor of verifying a sea of figures that exasperated Babbage, but their daunting unreliability. Engineering, astronomy, construction, finance, banking and insurance depended on printed tables for calculation. Ships navigating by the stars relied on printed tables to find their position at sea. The stakes were high. Capital and life were thought to be at risk.
Babbage embarked on an ambitious venture to design and build mechanical calculating engines to eliminate the risk of human error in the production of printed tables. The 'unerring certainty of machinery' would solve the problem of human fallibility. His work on the engines led him from mechanized arithmetic to the entirely new realm of automatic computation. Tabular errors provided a practical stimulus. But this was not his only motive. He also saw his engines as a new technology of mathematics.
Babbage himself failed to build a complete calculating engine and his designs remained an historical curiosity for over 150 years.
Finally, in 2002, the first full-size Babbage Engine (Difference Engine No. 2), built faithfully to the original designs, was completed at the Science Museum in London, the culmination of a seventeen year project. The Engine consists of 8,000 parts, weighs 5 tons and measures eleven feet long and seven feet high. It works as Babbage intended, and brings to a close an anguished chapter in the prehistory of computing.

A duplicate engine is on display and demonstrated at the Computer History Museum in Mountain View, California. It is a sumptuous piece of engineering sculpture and an arresting sight in operation. Charles Babbage, FRS was an English polymath. He was a mathematician, philosopher, inventor and mechanical engineer, who is best remembered now for originating the concept of a programmable computer.
Considered a "father of the computer", Babbage is credited with inventing the first mechanical computer that eventually led to more complex designs. His varied work in other fields has led him to be described as "pre-eminent" among the many polymaths of his century.
Parts of Babbage's uncompleted mechanisms are on display in the London Science Museum. In 1991, a perfectly functioning difference engine was constructed from Babbage's original plans. Built to tolerances achievable in the 19th century, the success of the finished engine indicated that Babbage's machine would have worked.
Early life
Babbage's birthplace is disputed, but according to the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography he was most likely born at 44 Crosby Row, Walworth Road, London, England. A blue plaque on the junction of Larcom Street and Walworth Road commemorates the event.
His date of birth was given in his obituary in The Times as 26 December 1792; but then a nephew wrote to say that Babbage was born one year earlier, in 1791. The parish register of St. Mary's Newington, London, shows that Babbage was baptised on 6 January 1792, supporting a birth year of 1791.
