A video tape recorder (VTR) is a tape recorder designed to record video material, usually on a magnetic tape. VTRs originated as individual tape reels, serving as a replacement for motion picture film stock and making recording for television applications cheaper and quicker. An improved form included the tape within a videocassette, which was used with video cassette recorders (VCR). VCRs soon found their way onto the consumer market; however, there have been a wide variety of VTR technologies, many produced primarily for the professional.
The history of the videocassette recorder follows the history of videotape recording in general. In 1952 the Vision Electronic Recording Apparatus high speed multi-track machine was built and trialed by the BBC. This machine used a thin steel tape on a 21-inch (53.5 cm) reel traveling at over 200 inches (510 cm) per second. Despite 10 years of research and improvements, the machine became obsolete when Ampex introduced the Ampex VRX-1000. This model became the world's first commercially successful videotape recorder in 1956. It used the 2" Quadruplex format, using two-inch (5.1 cm) tape. Because of its US$50,000 price, the Ampex VRX-1000 could be afforded only by the television networks and the largest individual stations.
Follow the river
Wallow in silver
Voices draw nearer
I'm counting out the day's wage
Let it be known, lettin' it out
Let it be known, lettin' it out
See it so near, it seems so far
It's when you're here, It's where you are
See it so clear
Making my head spin
Watching the world sing
Holding me under
Try and get a hold son
Let it be known, lettin' it out
Let it be known, lettin' it out
See it so near, it seems so far
It's when you're here, it's where you are
See it so clear
Pale and wanton
Dreams forgotten
No use crying
I feel like chicken on a bone, chicken on a bone
See it so near, it seems so far
It's when you're here, it's where you are
See it so clear
Lettin' it out
Oh, let it be known, let it be known
Lettin' it out, Lettin' it out, Lettin' it out
Let it be known, let it be known
Lettin' it out, Lettin' it out, Lettin' it out
Hello, hello, hello..
Let it be known, let it be known
Lettin' it out, Lettin' it out, Lettin' it out
Let it be known, let it be known
