Alex is a common name used in multiple languages. In English, it is usually a diminutive of the male given name Alexander, or its female equivalent Alexandra or Alexandria. Aleck or Alec is the Scottish form of Alex. The East European male name Alexey (Aleksei, Alexis, Aleksa) is also sometimes shortened to Alex. It is a commonly used nickname in Spanish for Alejandro, Alexandro, Alejandrino and Alexandrino, and related names like Alexa and Alexis.
Sunrise Alley is a romantic science fiction novel by Catherine Asaro about a retired EI engineer named Samantha Bryton, and her adventures with an escaped EI who claims to be a human named Turner Pascal.
After barely surviving a ship wreck, Turner and Sam set out on a series of adventures to try to discover who the mysterious "Charon" is (the former jailer of Turner) and what/where exactly "Sunrise Alley" is. Unsure of whom to trust, the characters manage a series of escapes, eventually discovering the truth behind Turner's existence and his captor. Both characters explore the notion of humanity and machine intelligence, and eventually come to blur the distinction, with the apparent realization that humanity and machine technology will inevitably merge. In the process they also fall in love.
Some of the technology of the book is very similar to Catherine Asaro's Saga of the Skolian Empire, including elements such as Evolving Intelligence, nanomeds, biomechanical enhancements and futuristic networks called "meshes".
When photographer Alex Webb first visited Mexico in 1975, he was immediately captivated by the intense light, color, and energy of its streets. Over the next few decades, he would return numerous times, drawn to the U.S.-Mexico border, and then into southern Mexico in the 1980s and ’90s. Casting his preconceptions aside, he allowed his camera to lead him. “I work extremely intuitively,” Webb said in a recent interview at the Aperture Gallery, where his exhibition La Calle is currently on view. “I wander, I respond. I don’t work rationally at all. Am I aware of certain elements rationally at times? Sure. But I think that often when I am more aware of them, it usually means that the picture falls flat.” The resulting images are multilayered and evocative. In each of his street photographs,...

This photo essay, part of our collaboration with Magnum Photos, documents Alex Webb's exploration of Chicago and the Loop. Inspired in part by one of his early influences, Ray Metzker's "My Camera and I in the Loop," he explores the streets of the US's "Second City." Though unlike the street photographers of the so-called Chicago School (Callahan, Metzger, Sturr, Sterling), Alex Webb has chosen to photograph the city's multitudinous character in color. Having spent most of his 30 year long career shooting outside of the US, Alex Webb turns his lens to his home nation during this very important election year. In this series we ask noted photographers, collectors, writers and curators this question: "What are the qualities that make an image really stick with you?" And we ask while they are driving Lady Blue around the block. (Or if the drive is not an option, we have an adorable miniature to be involved in her place.) This "Around the Block" features Alex Webb and Rebecca Norris Webb - photographers, collaborators, book-makers, spouses, and all-around talented pair.

The Suffering of Light was published in 2011. What you see in the book flip is the reprint, printed again in 2013. -- What is Book Flip, Book Flip for You? "Book Flip, a book Flip For You" exists to expose (if not seen before) some photography work to the public (meaning probably to 1 or 2 of you) to books in the genre of Street photography and it's close siblings, social landscape and documentary photography. Other genres will be flipped for the sake of learning from that genre. Some of these photo-books have received little airplay, some a lot of depending on the certain period of time. My choice of the photo-books are subjective, from my own bent. Street photography (whether you like that term or not) is the greatest photographic genre of all time. These book flips will consist of...

I pray on Christmas
That the Lord will see me through
I pray on Christmas
He'll show me what to do
I pray on Christmas
He'll help me understand
And I pray on Christmas
He's gonna take me by the hand
I pray on Christmas
That the sick will soon be strong
I pray on Christmas
That the Lord will hear my song
I pray on Christmas
That God will lead the way
And I pray on Christmas
He'll get me through another day
I pray on Christmas
I pray on Christmas
I pray on Christmas
He'll get me through another day
I pray on Christmas
All our problems gonna be worked out
I pray on Christmas
God will show us what love's about
I pray on Christmas
To do your will each day
And I pray on Christmas
That I will be with you in heaven someday
I pray on Christmas
Oh, the sick will soon be strong
I pray on Christmas
That the Lord will hear my song
I pray on Christmas
That God will lead the way
And I really, really pray on Christmas day
That I will make it through another day
I pray on Christmas
