The CELESTIAL Convergence | http://www.thecelestialconvergence.com/ September 8, 2014 - ARIZONA, UNITED STATES - The arid desert terrain of Arizona was transformed into a real-life Waterworld on Monday as record-breaking floods swept across the region. Torrential downpours turned Phoenix highways into massive lakes and stranded dozens of people in the metro area as rainfall totals measured as much as nearly 5 inches in what’s already being considered the biggest flood in 44 years, the Arizona Republic reports. The CELESTIAL Convergence | http://www.thecelestialconvergence.com/ September 9, 2014 - PAKISTAN/INDIA - The death toll from floods in India and Pakistan has passed 375 as authorities continue efforts to rescue hundreds of thousands of stranded people. More than 200 people are now thought to have died in Pakistan, where flood waters have destroyed thousands of homes and large areas of farmland. In Indian-administered Kashmir some 175 people have been killed, many of them swept away by surging rivers. Leaders of both countries have offered to help each other provide relief. Over the weekend Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi wrote to his Pakistani counterpart, Nawaz Sharif, offering help to flood-hit victims on that side of the border. Late on Monday, Mr Sharif thanked Mr Modi for his offer and said Pakistan was "prepared to extend a helping hand, in whatever way possible". Correspondents say it is unlikely that either side will accept the other's offer of help, given that Kashmir is one of the most heavily militarised regions in the world. Meanwhile, authorities in both countries are engaged in relief operations. In Pakistan, officials said most of those killed were in Punjab province. Landslides have damaged roads and power lines, leaving many people without electricity and drinking water in Pakistan-administered Kashmir. Flood waters submerged homes after the Chenab river rose dramatically over the weekend, causing what has been described as a "superflood". The biggest concern now is of a new flood caused by a surge of water flowing from across the border in India, says the BBC's Andrew North in Jammu. In Indian-administered Kashmir, rescue workers are intensifying efforts to reach people stranded after the worst floods there in half a century. With road and communication links broken getting to those stranded in remote areas is proving to be a stiff challenge. The Indian army and air force are using helicopters to drop relief supplies and evacuate as many people as they can. Naval commandos have also been deployed to rescue survivors. The rain has eased off but many parts of the state are still inaccessible - large areas in the state capital Srinagar remain under water. "It is our idea to get them [people stranded in Srinagar and southern Kashmir] out as soon as possible. We will continue... until everyone is pulled out of this situation," senior army official Gen DS Hooda said. Stephen Buzard plays the John-Paul Buzard opus 42 at St. Bridget Catholic Church, Richmond, VA Allegro maestoso is the first movement of Elgar’s monumental Organ Sonata in G Major, opus 28. Hugh Blair, organist of Worcester Cathedral, requested Elgar to write a piece in honor of a convention of American organists visiting Worcester in the summer of 1895. Expecting a simple voluntary or chorale prelude, Blair was surprised to find the score to this four movement symphonic work tucked beneath his front door only a week after its commission, and with only four days until the premier! After a poor first performance, a visiting organist remarked to Elgar how unfortunate it was that Mr. Blair murdered his beautiful sonata. Elgar replied that the criminal had not time to thoroughly study his victim. Stephen Buzard is assistant organist at Saint Thomas Church in New York City. He studied with Thomas Murray and Ken Cowan and performs frequently throughout the United States. The CELESTIAL Convergence | http://thecelestialconvergence.blogspot.com/ August 18, 2013 - JAPAN - Sakurajima, one of Japan's most active volcanoes, experienced one of its most powerful eruptions in decades Sunday, sending an ash plume thousands of feet into the air. The volcano, located in the far southwestern part of Japan's mainland on the island of Kyushu, began to erupt at 4:31 p.m. local time Sunday (3:31 a.m. EDT U.S. time). The smoke plume eventually reached a height of 5,000 meters (approximately 16,000 feet), according to the Kagoshima Local Meteorological Observatory. Public broadcaster NHK reported it was the volcano's tallest ash plume since records began in 1955. Visibility in the city of Kagoshima, where the volcano sits, deteriorated quickly as ash spread into populated portions of the city of 600,000 residents, according to the English-language NHK World website. NHK World said a pyroclastic flow, a fast-moving current of gas and rock, was observed along a one-kilometer (0.6-mile) swath on the southeast flank of the mountain. Japanese news media said it was the 500th eruption of 2013 at Sakurajima. There are no early reports of any injuries. The eruption is the latest in a string of recent natural calamities in Japan. A deadly, record-shattering heat wave has gripped Japan most of this month. Northern Japan suffered deadly landslides earlier this month and has seen additional heavy rainfall and floods in more recent days. During a press conference today, President Obama announced that the United States will work to improve relations with Cuba, calling the current approach to dealing with the island "outdated." According to CNN, President Obama revealed the details of the new plan, noting that they were the "most forceful" that a president could make without backing from Congress: President Obama announced a major loosening of travel and economic restrictions on the country. And the two nations are set to re-open embassies, with preliminary discussions on that next step in normalizing diplomatic relations beginning in the coming weeks, a senior administration official tells CNN. Talks between the U.S. and Cuba have been ongoing since June of 2013 and were facilitated by the Canadians and the Vatican in brokering the deal. Pope Francis -- the first pope from Latin America -- encouraged Obama in a letter and in their meeting this year to renew talks with Cuba on pursuing a closer relationship. In addition to re-establishing ties, U.S. contractor Alan Gross, who had been detained by Cuba since 2009, was freed as part of the agreement. A spy being held in Cuba was exchanged for three Cubans incarcerated in Florida, as well. As CNN notes, this is the most pivotal development between the U.S. and Cuba since diplomatic relations ended in 1961. Live recording from a Helsinki Festival with the Danish National Radio Symphony Orchestra conducted by the composer. This work is also called "Orchestral Diary Sheet No. 18". Segerstam is native to Finland, born in Helsinki in 1944. Of the "Thoughts" series, he says, "It comes from my freely pulsating, post impressionist, neo-romantic world of sounds from a bold unconscious, open to an atmosphere of free association". "In 'Thoughts 1989' my impressions of the Nordic summer are especially energetic, tense, and coloured by a strength of will". "I needed some humoristic spices, so the piece contains a number of glissando belly laughs on the slidewhistle and murmurings among the brass". "Meditative and questioning periods alternate with melodic, singable sections in the strings. And if the compositional freedom leads to screaming volcanic chaos, the antidote lies in collecting the thoughts in unison pillars in the Brucknerian manner". "The family relationship in the 'Thoughts' series lies in their treatment of a completely free atonality in the so-called free-pulsative style which is a practical mixture of bar-notated music with a completely free style commencing at exact points, but which can then develop naturally, and is free to land where it will in organic terms, creating its own microcosmos". He continues, "I hope that the listener will find my organic musical kaleidoscope, which was inspired by true Nordic Nature mysticism (the experience of summer), to be a stimulating experience". This recording comes from the BIS label CD-583, which contains two other works: "Thoughts 1990 for Soloistic String Quartet and Orchestra " (26'56"), and "Monumental Thoughts 1989 - In Memoriam Martti Talvela" (19'01"), both recorded in live concerts in Copenhagen - the latter being the World Premier Performance. The video images are not specific to any of these recordings. The concert hall shown is the new DR Concert Hall which was opened in Copenhagen in January 2009.

Johann Sebastian Bach - Partita for solo violin Nº 2 in D minor, BWV 1004. 1720. Hilary Hahn, Violin, 1997. Chaconne 15:30 - http://youtu.be/QqA3qQMKueA In 1999, Hahn said that she played Bach more than any other composer and that she had played solo Bach pieces every day since she was eight. "Bach is, for me, the touchstone that keeps my playing honest. Keeping the intonation pure in double stops, bringing out the various voices where the phrasing requires it, crossing the strings so that there are not inadvertent accents, presenting the structure in such a way that it's clear to the listener without being pedantic -- one can't fake things in Bach, and if one gets all of them to work, the music sings in the most wonderful way." — Hilary Hahn, Saint Paul Sunday In a segment on NPR entitled "Musicians in Their Own Words", Hahn speaks about the surreal experience of playing the Bach Chaconne (listen here: http://youtu.be/QqA3qQMKueA from the Partita for Violin No. 2) alone on the concert stage. Alongside Paganini's 24 Caprices for solo violin and Bach's six cello suites, his Partitas and Sonatas (three apiece) for solo violin stand out among their comparatively few siblings as magnificent music written for an unaccompanied stringed instrument. And while they also represent the zenith of polyphonic writing for a non-keyboard instrument, Bach's sonatas and partitas were also crucially important in the development of violin technique. With their colossal scope, huge technical demands, and musical complexity, and notwithstanding their awesome intellectual intensity, these creations greatly transcended anything that had preceded them, including the Partitas for solo violin by von Westhoff (1696), and various comparable solo works by Biber, Pisendel, and others. It seems most probable that either the Dresden virtuosi Pisendel or Volumier, or even more likely the Cöthen Konzertmeister Spiess, would have been the first players to attempt these exceptionally challenging works, all of which sound as if they were written for an age of instrumental virtuosity that still lay far in the future. The sonatas are restricted to four movements (slow-fast-slow-fast, as with the early sonata da chiesa), one of which is a fugue. The Partitas are generally more extended, and of unorthodox formal design (as perhaps is implied by their more wide-ranging generic title), and by the more exploratory, improvisatory feel of the music even as they consist of sequences of Baroque dances. The awesome and eloquent Partita No. 2 in D minor, BWV 1004, seems for the most part to follow the conventional outline of the Baroque suite, opening with an earnest and purposeful Allemanda unexpectedly free of chordal multiple-stopping. There follow a Corrente and a Sarabanda, whose brief coda furnishes the link with the succeeding Giga. However, this work concludes with the most labyrinthine and intellectually powerful single movement ever devised for an unaccompanied string instrument. This is Bach's famous Chaconne (originally "Ciaccona"), a colossal arched series of 64 stunning variants upon the stark, open-ended four-measure phrase heard at the beginning. Two monumental outer sections in the minor enclose a major-key central episode, and this great structure encompasses every aspect of violin-playing technique and contrapuntal ingenuity that would have been known in Bach's day. The Chaconne, whose duration exceeds 15 minutes (and is thus longer than the rest of the work put together) is often performed as a free-standing movement and has also been widely transcribed for other instruments.

Big News Network 2015-04-14Major is a rank of commissioned officer, with corresponding ranks existing in many military forces. It is also used in some police forces such as the New York State Police, New Jersey State Police and several others.
When used unhyphenated, in conjunction with no other indicator of rank, the term refers to the rank just senior to that of an army captain and just below the rank of lieutenant colonel. It is considered the most junior of the field ranks. In some militaries, notably France, the rank is referred to as commandant, while in others it is known as captain-major. It is also used in some police forces and other paramilitary rank structures.
When used in hyphenated or combined fashion, the term can also imply seniority at other levels of rank, including general-major or major general, denoting a mid-level general officer, and sergeant major, denoting the most senior NCO of a military unit.
It can also be used with a hyphen to denote the leader of a military band such as in pipe-major or drum-major.
Monumental, the adjective form of the noun, monument, may refer to:
Sir Edward William Elgar, 1st Baronet OM, GCVO (2 June 1857 – 23 February 1934) was an English composer, many of whose works have entered the British and international classical concert repertoire. Among his best-known compositions are orchestral works including the Enigma Variations, the Pomp and Circumstance Marches, concertos for violin and cello, and two symphonies. He also composed choral works, including The Dream of Gerontius, chamber music and songs. He was appointed Master of the King's Musick in 1924.
Although Elgar is often regarded as a typically English composer, most of his musical influences were not from England but from continental Europe. He felt himself to be an outsider, not only musically, but socially. In musical circles dominated by academics, he was a self-taught composer; in Protestant Britain, his Roman Catholicism was regarded with suspicion in some quarters; and in the class-conscious society of Victorian and Edwardian Britain, he was acutely sensitive about his humble origins even after he achieved recognition. He nevertheless married the daughter of a senior British army officer. She inspired him both musically and socially, but he struggled to achieve success until his forties, when after a series of moderately successful works his Enigma Variations (1899) became immediately popular in Britain and overseas. He followed the Variations with a choral work, The Dream of Gerontius (1900), based on a Roman Catholic text that caused some disquiet in the Anglican establishment in Britain, but it became, and has remained, a core repertory work in Britain and elsewhere. His later full-length religious choral works were well received but have not entered the regular repertory. The first of his Pomp and Circumstance Marches (1901) is well known in the English-speaking world.
