Saint-Pierre et Miquelon;
Vent arrière", sur le label @rtschipel.
For my
English-speaking family and friends - here's the info for the beautiful background music. The first song is "Je m'en vais demain," sung by the group Dan Ar Braz, from the album entitled "A toi et ceux", on the Columbia label. The second song is entitled "Je suis né Outre-Mer" sung by Henri Lafitte. The song is from the superb compilation album "Anthologie de la Chanson à Saint-Pierre et Miquelon: Vent arrière", on the @rtschipel label.
Unknown to many
Americans and
Canadians, Saint-Pierre is just a three hour flight from
Montréal, Québec,
3-4 hours from
New York City or
Newark via
Halifax, Nova Scotia; or just a one hour hop from
Saint John's, Newfoundland. It is inhabited by proud people with a rich history in fishing, and even bootlegging! Of
Acadian,
Breton,
Basque and other heritage, the people of the
Saint-Pierre and Miquelon Archipelago are
North American in perspective, and
French in their hearts and especially, in their kitchens!
Visit France without even leaving
North America -plan your holiday in Saint-Pierre et Miquelon!
Are you a North American of French ancestry, or, like me, an
American who grew up learning French at school? Do you want to learn French simply because it's beautiful and useful and will open your eyes to another way of living and thinking which would enrich your own life, and perhaps enhance your CV? Interested in a
French-immersion experience?
Love the sea? You'll love Francoforum, a brand-new way for
North Americans to learn French, closer to home, on St-Pierre, just two hours ahead of
NYC.
PS: there are puffins, dolphins, whales, and all sorts of sea birds to see here too, but they're mostly to be found on Miquelon, which I didn't have a chance to explore this time.
Next time for sure. But the best part of visiting here is definitely the people. I received offers to 'go lobster fishing next time', or to attend a 'big family barbecue next time'.
It's rare in this day and age to find this kind of openness. Saint-Pierre reminded me of the little seaside village in
Scotland made famous by the movie "
Local Hero".
