Thousands of Hamas supporters rallied at the funeral of Yehiya Ayyash, the man known as the Engineer and blamed for a spate of suicide bomb attacks in Israel.
Ayyash - a hero to many Palestinians - belonged to the militant Islamic group Hamas and there was a huge outpouring of grief and anger from supporters at his funeral service in Gaza Saturday.
There was also a huge rally in the West Bank town of Ramallah to mark his death.
Hundreds of angry Hamas supporters gathered at a rally at the Islamic University in Gaza on the day Yehiya Ayyash was to be buried.
Anti-Israeli feelings were shown by burning several Israeli flags.
They later joined the thousands of mourners outside the Hamas-run mosque in Gaza for the funeral service.
They had gathered to show their grief and their respect for the man who was known as the Engineer.
Ayyash was believed to be the mastermind behind a series of Palestinian suicide bombings that began in April of 1994 and killed 70 Israelis.
He died Friday when a booby-trapped mobile phone exploded in his hands, Palestinian officials said.
Many Hamas supporters suspect Israel of being behind his death.
Shin Bet , Israel's internal security agency, made the capture of Ayyash their top priority - dead or alive.
But he was a hero to many Palestinians in the West Bank and Gaza and a general strike has been declared for three days in Gaza in his memory.
Emotions ran high as mourners tried to force a way through the crowd for the funeral procession.
Once the way was clear the traditional firing off guns marked the passing of a man they now consider a martyr.
Ayyash's mother was overcome at one stage during the procession and had to sit down on the crowded platform to recover.
But his father, Abdul-Latif, continued to salute the crowd and led them in chanting religious slogans.
Ayyash's wife and young sons did not join the funeral procession so as to avoid the crush of the crowd.
Angry Hamas supporters have vowed to revenge the death of Ayyash and some have called for a jihad, or holy war against the Jewish state.
These same sentiments were expressed at a rally in the West Bank town of Ramallah.
Thousands attended the rally to show their anger over Ayyash's death.
His death also affected those at all levels of Palestinian society.
Palestinian Liberation Organisation leader Yasser Arafat nearly cancelled a trip to Bethlehem for the Orthodox Christmas celebrations.
But he decided to go ahead with the visit amidst very tight security.

Yahya Ayyash
Yahya Abd-al-Latif Ayyash (Arabic: يحيى عياش) (22 February 1966 – 5 January 1996) was the chief bombmaker of Hamas and the leader of the West Bank battalion of the Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades. In that capacity, he earned the nickname the Engineer (Arabic: المهندس, transliterated al-Muhandis). He was assassinated by Shin Bet on 5 January 1996.
He is a celebrated hero to Palestinians who have named streets and other locales in his honor.
Early life
Ayyash was born in Rafat on 22 February 1966, the eldest of three brothers. Al Qassam's website, however, states his birth date as 3 March 1966. As a child, he was very pious, receiving an award from the Islamic Trust for his talent in memorizing the Quran. While a boy, Ayyash showed a talent for electrical and mechanical work—repairing radios, television sets, and the like. After graduating from high school in 1985, he entered Birzeit University in 1987. He received a bachelor of science degree in electrical engineering in 1991.
Described as "well educated, ambitious, and soft-spoken," Ayyash hailed from a relatively affluent family. Married, with one child, Ayyash had planned to study for a master's degree in Jordan, but was denied permission to do so by Israeli authorities. It was around this time he joined Hamas.

West Bank
The West Bank (Arabic: الضفة الغربية aḍ-Ḍiffah l-Ġarbiyyah; Hebrew: הגדה המערבית, HaGadah HaMa'aravit) or Cisjordan is a landlocked territory near the Mediterranean coast of Western Asia, forming the bulk of the Palestinian territories and the State of Palestine. The West Bank shares boundaries (demarcated by the Jordanian-Israeli armistice of 1949) to the west, north, and south with the state of Israel, and to the east, across the Jordan River, with Jordan. The West Bank also contains a significant section of the western Dead Sea shore.
The West Bank, including East Jerusalem, has a land area of 5,640 km2 plus a water area of 220 km2, consisting of the northwest quarter of the Dead Sea. It has an estimated population of 2,676,740 (July 2013). More than 80%, about 2,800,000, are Palestinian Arabs, and approximately 500,000 are Jewish Israelis living in the West Bank, including about 192,000 in East Jerusalem, in Israeli settlements, built on the 43% of the West Bank which Israel has allocated to local settler councils. The international community considers Israeli settlements in the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, illegal under international law, though Israel disputes this. The International Court of Justice advisory ruling (2004) concluded that events that came after the 1967 occupation of the West Bank by Israel, including the Jerusalem Law, Israel's peace treaty with Jordan and the Oslo Accords, did not change the status of the West Bank (including East Jerusalem) as occupied territory with Israel as the occupying power.

Thousands of Hamas supporters rallied at the funeral of Yehiya Ayyash, the man known as the Engineer and blamed for a spate of suicide bomb attacks in Israel.
Ayyash - a hero to many Palestinians - belonged to the militant Islamic group Hamas and there was a huge outpouring of grief and anger from supporters at his funeral service in Gaza Saturday.
There was also a huge rally in the West Bank town of Ramallah to mark his death.
Hundreds of angry Hamas supporters gathered at a rally at the Islamic University in Gaza on the day Yehiya Ayyash was to be buried.
Anti-Israeli feelings were shown by burning several Israeli flags.
They later joined the thousands of mourners outside the Hamas-run mosque in Gaza for the funeral service.
They had gathered to show their grief and their respect for the man who was known as the Engineer.
Ayyash was believed to be the mastermind behind a series of Palestinian suicide bombings that began in April of 1994 and killed 70 Israelis.
He died Friday when a booby-trapped mobile phone exploded in his hands, Palestinian officials said.
Many Hamas supporters suspect Israel of being behind his death.
Shin Bet , Israel's internal security agency, made the capture of Ayyash their top priority - dead or alive.
But he was a hero to many Palestinians in the West Bank and Gaza and a general strike has been declared for three days in Gaza in his memory.
Emotions ran high as mourners tried to force a way through the crowd for the funeral procession.
Once the way was clear the traditional firing off guns marked the passing of a man they now consider a martyr.
Ayyash's mother was overcome at one stage during the procession and had to sit down on the crowded platform to recover.
But his father, Abdul-Latif, continued to salute the crowd and led them in chanting religious slogans.
Ayyash's wife and young sons did not join the funeral procession so as to avoid the crush of the crowd.
Angry Hamas supporters have vowed to revenge the death of Ayyash and some have called for a jihad, or holy war against the Jewish state.
These same sentiments were expressed at a rally in the West Bank town of Ramallah.
Thousands attended the rally to show their anger over Ayyash's death.
His death also affected those at all levels of Palestinian society.
Palestinian Liberation Organisation leader Yasser Arafat nearly cancelled a trip to Bethlehem for the Orthodox Christmas celebrations.
But he decided to go ahead with the visit amidst very tight security.

Anniversary of the martyrdom of the biggest enemy of Israel in its history
In 1994, an American Jew that had settled in Occupied Palestine shot dead 29 Palestinian worshipers in a massacre inside a Mosque in the city of Hebron. Yahya Ayyash, aka "The engineer" decided to make Israel pay for its actions by making bombs that were later used in several operations that killed hundreds of Israelis in retaliation of its routinely killing of Palestinians in general and the latest massacre in particular. In 1994, an American Jew that had settled in Occupied Palestine shot dead 29 Palestinian worshipers in a massacre inside a Mosque in the city of Hebron. Yahya Ayyash, aka "The engineer" decided to make Israel pay for its actions by making bombs that were later used in several operations that killed hundreds of Israelis in retaliation of its routinely killing of Palestinians in general and the latest massacre in particular.
Ayyash taught Israel a hard lesson by killing/injuring hundreds of their land thievings citizens that were all involved in occupying Palestine by serving in the Zionist terrorist organization [IDF] and therefor everyone were a legitimate target.
After making Israel a living hell for its illegal residents, Ayyash was assassinated 05/01-1996 by the Shin bet.
Interesting fact: Ayyash was denied a permit to go and study in Jordan by the Israeli occupation forces, only months before he joined Hamas and its military wing Al-Qassam. This was a decision the former Israeli PM Shimon Peres commented on by saying: "If I knew that Ayyash would do this to my country, I would have never let him stay in Palestine."

The Houthi rebels and the Saudi-led coalition are accusing each other of holding aid ships in Yemen.
Hodeidah port is still crippled from airstrikes to cranes which are used to unload goods from ships.
STORY-LINE:
Hodeidah port is under Houthi control. And the rebels are accused of holding aid ships here by the pro-government Saudi coalition.
It says the Houthis are blocking a number of vessels, preventing humanitarian supplies from getting to people in desperate need.
The Houthis deny the claim, saying all ships in the port are normal cargo ships.
Captain Gamal Ayyash, manager of Hodeidah ports, says "no UN ship" is being held.
"We welcome all aid ships, and give them priority in harbouring and in unloading."
The Houthis' counter claim is that the Saudi coalition is itself holding more than 16 ships and preventing them from entering the port.
"They are waiting for permission from the United Nations, and some have been given permission, but are still being held by coalition forces," says Yahya Sharaf Ad-Din, deputy director of the Hodeidah ports.
Even if the ships make it here, unloading their cargo will prove difficult.
The port uses cranes to bring goods like wheat onshore.
But the area has previously been targeted by airstrikes, damaging the equipment.
George Khoury, Head of Office for OCHA Yemen, says humanitarian groups and the port authorities are trying to being in new cranes.
He says repairs to the port are "extremely important" for improving Yemen's humanitarian situation.
