Yolanda and the Thief (Technicolor) is a 1945 MGM musical-comedy film set in a fictional Latin American country, and stars Fred Astaire, Lucille Bremer, Frank Morgan, Ludwig Stossel and Mildred Natwick, with music by Harry Warren and lyrics by Arthur Freed. The film was directed by Vincente Minnelli and produced by Arthur Freed.
The film - a long-time pet project of Freed's to promote his lover Bremer's career - which fared disastrously at the box-office, was an attempt to create a whimsical fantasy and ended up - in the words of critic John Mueller - as "egg-nog instead of the usual champagne", despite admirable production values. The music is merely competent, the orchestration syrupy, Bremer's acting is poor, whereas the already fragile plot and some good comedy elements were scuppered by last-minute injudicious cutting by Minnelli. It ruined Bremer's career and discouraged Astaire, who decided to retire after his next film Blue Skies.
Perhaps it also vindicated Astaire's own horror of "inventing up to the arty" - his phrase for the approach of those who would set out a priori to create art, whereas he believed artistic value could only emerge as an accidental and unpremeditated by-product of a tireless search for perfection. In his autobiography, Astaire approvingly quotes Los Angeles Times critic Edwin Schallert:" 'Not for realists' is a label that may be appropriately affixed to Yolanda and the Thief. It is a question, too, whether this picture has the basic material to satisfy the general audience, although in texture and trimmings it might be termed an event." Astaire himself concluded: "This verified my feeling that doing fantasy on the screen is an extra risk."

'Meet Me In St Louis' is a story musical during the summer and winter of 1903 when the mundane city of St. Louis, Mo. prepared for a huge World's Fair commemorating the 100th anniversary of the Louisiana Purchase, which filled every citizen of St.Louis with a sense of progress and love for the city.
Think for a moment about the world of 1904. The Wright Brothers' famous flight at Kitty Hawk occurred the previous year. Gasoline-powered automobiles, motion pictures, and the "wonder drug" aspirin were introduced to the public only 10 years before. Electric lighting and telephones were less than 25 years old, and still a novelty only read about by most Americans. Food was stored in ice boxes, and the horse-drawn ice wagon was a familiar site. But from Opening Day - April 30, 1904 - to the closing ceremonies on December 1st of that same year, the St. Louis World's Fair played host to nearly 20 million visitors, who witnessed the public debut of air conditioning, were able to ice skate throughout the entire summer, and spoke by wireless telegraph to cities 1500 mile away. In addition, they could "see the world": from the Tyrolean Alps to the jungles of the Philippines; from the gardens of Japan to the holy sites of Jerusalem; from Southwestern pueblos to Eskimo villages. And all within the 1240 acres of the fair.
The site was designed by George Kessler, & was located at the present-day grounds of Forest Park and on the campus of Washington University, and was the largest fair to date.
A number of foods are claimed to have been invented at the fair. The most popular is that the waffle-style ice cream cone was made and first sold. Other claims include the hamburger and hot dog, peanut butter, iced tea, Dr Pepper, Puffed Wheat cereal and cotton candy.

Lucille Bremer
Lucille Bremer (February 21, 1917 – April 16, 1996) was an American film actress and dancer.
Biography
Bremer was born in Amsterdam, New York, and began her career as a Rockette at Radio City Music Hall in New York City, aged 16. Bremer, along with fellow stars Vera-Ellen and June Allyson, appeared as a 'Pony Girl' in the Broadway musical Panama Hattie in 1940. Spotted by a talent scout, she was taken to Hollywood, where her screen test impressed Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer mogul Louis B. Mayer. An accomplished dancer, she was also considered to display potential as a dramatic actress.
She made her screen debut in Meet Me in St. Louis (1944) as Judy Garland's sister, and followed this with a co-starring role opposite Fred Astaire in Yolanda and the Thief (1945), and a featured dance performance, once again with Astaire, in two memorable sequences in Ziegfeld Follies (1946). Her last major film was Till the Clouds Roll By (1946), but after this, MGM began to lose interest in promoting her. After a few minor films, she played her last starring role in Behind Locked Doors (1948).

Judy Garland
Judy Garland (June 10, 1922 – June 22, 1969), born Frances Ethel Gumm, was an American singer, actress, and vaudevillian. She was renowned for her contralto vocals and attained international stardom which continued throughout a career that spanned more than 40 years as an actress in musical and dramatic roles, as a recording artist, and on concert stages. Respected for her versatility, she received a Juvenile Academy Award and won a Golden Globe Award as well as a Special Tony Award. She was the first woman to win a Grammy for Album of the Year.
Garland was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actress for her role in the remake of A Star Is Born and for Best Supporting Actress for her performance in the 1961 film Judgment at Nuremberg. She remains the youngest recipient (at 39 years of age) of the Cecil B. DeMille Award for lifetime achievement in the motion picture industry.
After appearing in vaudeville with her two older sisters, Garland was signed to Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer as a teenager. There, she made more than two dozen films, including nine with Mickey Rooney, and 1939's The Wizard of Oz. After 15 years, she was released from the studio and then gained new success through record-breaking concert appearances, including a return to acting, beginning with critically acclaimed performances.

In his autobiography, Astaire approvingly quotes Los Angeles Times critic Edwin Schallert:" 'Not for realists' is a label that may be appropriately affixed to Yolanda and the Thief. It is a question, too, whether this picture has the basic material to satisfy the general audience, although in texture and trimmings it might be termed an event." Astaire himself concluded: "This verified my feeling that doing fantasy on the screen is an extra risk."

Think for a moment about the world of 1904. The Wright Brothers' famous flight at Kitty Hawk occurred the previous year. Gasoline-powered automobiles, motion pictures, and the "wonder drug" aspirin were introduced to the public only 10 years before. Electric lighting and telephones were less than 25 years old, and still a novelty only read about by most Americans. Food was stored in ice boxes, and the horse-drawn ice wagon was a familiar site. But from Opening Day - April 30, 1904 - to the closing ceremonies on December 1st of that same year, the St. Louis World's Fair played host to nearly 20 million visitors, who witnessed the public debut of air conditioning, were able to ice skate throughout the entire summer, and spoke by wireless telegraph to cities 1500 mile away. In addition, they could "see the world": from the Tyrolean Alps to the jungles of the Philippines; from the gardens of Japan to the holy sites of Jerusalem; from Southwestern pueblos to Eskimo villages. And all within the 1240 acres of the fair.
The site was designed by George Kessler, & was located at the present-day grounds of Forest Park and on the campus of Washington University, and was the largest fair to date.
A number of foods are claimed to have been invented at the fair. The most popular is that the waffle-style ice cream cone was made and first sold. Other claims include the hamburger and hot dog, peanut butter, iced tea, Dr Pepper, Puffed Wheat cereal and cotton candy.

" . . . This was a live tv remake of the 1944 MGM movie. It was charming and lively and you would never know it was not a movie, the actors were all perfect with their lines and singing and dancing. Myrna Loy and Walter Pidgeon were the parents, they could practically have been in the original as they were both MGM stars at the time, so it is nice they got to be in this one. THey even sing in one number, You and I. Also there is Jeanne Crain in one of her few live tv performances, very pretty still in her early thirties playing a teenager. But perhaps best of all were Jane Powell in Judy Garland's old role, singing well (Have yourself a merry little Christmas, the Trolley song, the Boy next door, danced and sang well in Skip to my loo), good acting. Plot: On the success of his latest and most elaborate Broadway musical "Show Boat", composer Jerome Kern (Robert Walker) reminisces to his chauffeur about his life that led to this point. He talks about: his long time friendship with arranger James Hessler who in large part helped him hone his craft, and who himself wanted to get out of arranging to focus on composing serious music; how he overcame the mentality of the time of Broadway producers of featuring the English music halls revues; how he met an English country lass named Eva Leale, who would become Mrs. Kern; his near death experience in almost boarding the ill-fated Lusitania sailing, the liner which was ultimately torpedoed and sank on that sailing; his longtime friendship with Hessler's daughter, Sally Hessler, whose want, as an adult, to be a Broadway performer led to a certain estrangement; and the specific events that led to the creation of "Show Boat" with lyricist Oscar Hammerstein II. With the advent of talking pictures, Kern's music, both existing songs as well as new songs written expressly for, would hit a broader audience through Hollywood movies.
