Former Industry Minister has been elected premier of Greece.
Simitis replaces the ailing 76-year-old Andreas Papandreou, who resigned Monday.
The new premier is a lawyer and professor of economics who trained in Germany and Britain and is popular with the business community because of his reformist views.
Greek Socialist lawmakers gathered Thursday in the Athens Parliament to elect a new prime minister following the resignation of the ailing 76-year-old Andreas Papandreou.
The former industry minister received 86 votes -- eleven more than his nearest rival in the ruling Panhellenic Socialist Movement -- or Pasok.
The former Greek premier was charismatic, but the man about to take his place is considered a bland technocrat and economist.
Which could be just what the Greek economy needs -- Costas Simitis is expected to speed up Greece's economic stabilisation programme.
Simitis has assured Greeks that tackling the country's economic problems would be one of his first priorities.

U-S President Bill Clinton says he deeply regrets the losses of businesses that were set ablaze in the Greek capital by demonstrators protesting at his visit.
At a news conference in Athens, Clinton also said he believed Greece and Turkey should seek international mediation to find a solution to their territorial disputes in the Aegean.
Bill Clinton and Greek Prime Minister Costas Simitis held a joint news conference on Saturday morning.
The U-S president referred to the violent clashes between anti-U-S protestors and riot police in the centre of Athens the evening before.
Dozens of stores and banks were damaged as the protestors ran riot.

"I strongly believe that protests should be peaceful and therefore I deeply regret the Greeks who had their property injured and who suffered losses through these demonstrations but I think that the important thing is that we reaffirmed the value of the relationship between the two nations. I think that, I know that most Americans deeply value the relationship with Greece notwithstanding the fact that almost all of the people of Greece disagreed with our policy in Kosovo and before that in Bosnia. I believe I did the right thing and I think most Americans believe that we did the right thing to stand against ethnic cleansing. But that doesn't affect our affection for and our support for the people of Greece and the government of Greece."

Simitis too expressed regret at disturbances which have embarrassed his government at the start of the U-S presidential visit.

Greek Prime Minister Costas Simitis has welcomed Serbian President Slobodan Milosevic to Athens.
The Serb leader arrived in the Greek capital Wednesday for a rare bilateral meeting with his Croat counterpart, Franjo Tudjman.
The meeting was organised by Simitis, who had the blessing of his Western allies.
The summit is aimed at normalising war-torn relations between the two most powerful republics in the Balkan region and reaching mutual diplomatic recognition.
Serbia dominates what remains of Yugoslavia after Croatia, Bosnia, and all other republics except Serbia and tiny Montenegro split away from the old Balkan federation.
Serbian and Croatian rivalries led to the 1991 Croatian war, which was followed by more than three and a half years of conflict in Bosnia.
The summit of the two most powerful politicians in former Yugoslavia is their first since
secretive talks in April 1991 in northern Serbia.
It's widely believed they used that occasion to discuss dividing neighbouring Bosnia.

In a meeting at the White House on Thursday U-S President George W. Bush thanked Greek Prime Minister Costas Simitis for being a friend in the fight against terrorism.
Before news cameras in the Oval Office, Bush thanked Greece for being a friend in the fight against terrorism and credited Simitis for easing longtime tensions with rival Turkey.
As the two sat down to their private meeting, Bush said the world was better off now that Greek relations with Turkey had improved.
Simitis said his nation will continue to work with the U-S and its allies in the war on terrorism.
And the two leaders shared a laugh when Simitis presented Bush with a sweat shirt for the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens.
The Greek government has offered military forces and medical units to the U-S-led war on terrorist targets in Afghanistan.
Also, a half-dozen Greek airmen are aboard U-S radar planes patrolling the skies over America.
Privately, the Bush administration was expected to press Greece to take tough action against the Revolutionary Organization 17 November in the unsolved murder of British Defense Attache Stephen Saunders in Athens in June 2000, as well as other terrorist attacks.
The U-S State Department, in a report last April, cited the violent far-left group in a number of anti-Western attacks.

Greek premier Costas Simitis has urged farmers to end their nationwide revolt, saying their financial demands were too expensive and risky.
Farmers are continuing a seven day blockade on key road and rail links in protest over government imposed austerity measures.

Farmers are demanding higher subsidies and settlement of 1-point-3 (b) billion dollars in debts owed to state banks.

Konstantinos Simitis (Greek: Κωνσταντίνος Σημίτης) (born 23 June 1936), usually referred to as Costas Simitis or Kostas Simitis, was Prime Minister of Greece and leader of the Panhellenic Socialist Movement (PASOK) from 1996 to 2004.
Costas Simitis' family has roots in Ilida (municipality).[citation needed] Ηe was born in Piraeus to Georgios Simitis, a Professor at the School of Economic and Commercial Sciences, and to his wife Fani (née Christopoulou). He studied Law at the University of Marburg in Germany and economics at the London School of Economics. He is married to Daphne Arkadiou (b. 1938)and has two daughters, Fiona and Marilena. His brother Spiros Simitis is a prominent jurist specializing on data privacy in Germany. He currently resides in the Kolonaki district of Athens.
In 1965 he returned to Greece and was one of the founders of the "Alexandros Papanastasiou" political research group . In 1967, after the military coup of 21 April, this group was transformed into Democratic Defense, an organization opposed to the military regime. Simitis escaped abroad after planting bombs in the streets of Athens (in later years he acknowledged his activities on Greek MEGA TV channel) in order to avoid being jailed and became a member of the Panhellenic Liberation Movement (PAK), led by Andreas Papandreou. He also took up a position as university lecturer in Germany. He returned to Athens in 1974 and was one of the co-founders of PAK's successor, the PASOK. In 1977 he took up a lecturer's post at the Panteion University.

William Jefferson "Bill" Clinton (born William Jefferson Blythe III; August 19, 1946) is an American politician who served as the 42nd President of the United States from 1993 to 2001. Inaugurated at age 46, he was the third-youngest president. He took office at the end of the Cold War, and was the first president of the baby boomer generation. Clinton has been described as a New Democrat. Many of his policies have been attributed to a centrist Third Way philosophy of governance.
Born and raised in Arkansas, Clinton became both a student leader and a skilled musician. He is an alumnus of Georgetown University where he was Phi Beta Kappa and earned a Rhodes Scholarship to attend the University of Oxford. He is married to Hillary Rodham Clinton, who has served as the United States Secretary of State since 2009 and was a Senator from New York from 2001 to 2009. Both Clintons received law degrees from Yale Law School, where they met and began dating. As Governor of Arkansas, Clinton overhauled the state's education system, and served as Chair of the National Governors Association.

Key roads and rail links have been made impassable in protest over government imposed austerity measures. Angry farmers have commandeer more than 40 main junctions around the country. As a result British, German and Italian trucks remained trapped. Most foreign truckers are stranded at the western port city of Patras, Greece's third largest harbour and key trade transit point. Farmers are demanding higher subsidies and settlement of 1-point-3 (b) billion dollars in debts owed to state banks. SOUNDBITE: (Greek) "We want satisfactory prices for all our produce. They now have humiliating prices. This is bankruptcy. We want the same financial policy as the farmers in Europe. At a news conference in Athens, Clinton also said he believed Greece and Turkey should seek international mediation to find a solution to their territorial disputes in the Aegean.
Bill Clinton and Greek Prime Minister Costas Simitis held a joint news conference on Saturday morning.
The U-S president referred to the violent clashes between anti-U-S protestors and riot police in the centre of Athens the evening before.
Dozens of stores and banks were damaged as the protestors ran riot.

"I strongly believe that protests should be peaceful and therefore I deeply regret the Greeks who had their property injured and who suffered losses through these demonstrations but I think that the important thing is that we reaffirmed the value of the relationship between the two nations. I think that, I know that most Americans deeply value the relationship with Greece notwithstanding the fact that almost all of the people of Greece disagreed with our policy in Kosovo and before that in Bosnia. I believe I did the right thing and I think most Americans believe that we did the right thing to stand against ethnic cleansing. But that doesn't affect our affection for and our support for the people of Greece and the government of Greece."

Greek Prime Minister Costas Simitis has welcomed Serbian President Slobodan Milosevic to Athens.
The Serb leader arrived in the Greek capital Wednesday for a rare bilateral meeting with his Croat counterpart, Franjo Tudjman.
The meeting was organised by Simitis, who had the blessing of his Western allies.
The summit is aimed at normalising war-torn relations between the two most powerful republics in the Balkan region and reaching mutual diplomatic recognition.
Serbia dominates what remains of Yugoslavia after Croatia, Bosnia, and all other republics except Serbia and tiny Montenegro split away from the old Balkan federation.
Serbian and Croatian rivalries led to the 1991 Croatian war, which was followed by more than three and a half years of conflict in Bosnia.
The summit of the two most powerful politicians in former Yugoslavia is their first since
secretive talks in April 1991 in northern Serbia.
It's widely believed they used that occasion to discuss dividing neighbouring Bosnia.

In a meeting at the White House on Thursday U-S President George W. Bush thanked Greek Prime Minister Costas Simitis for being a friend in the fight against terrorism.
Before news cameras in the Oval Office, Bush thanked Greece for being a friend in the fight against terrorism and credited Simitis for easing longtime tensions with rival Turkey.
As the two sat down to their private meeting, Bush said the world was better off now that Greek relations with Turkey had improved.
Simitis said his nation will continue to work with the U-S and its allies in the war on terrorism.
And the two leaders shared a laugh when Simitis presented Bush with a sweat shirt for the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens.
The Greek government has offered military forces and medical units to the U-S-led war on terrorist targets in Afghanistan.
Also, a half-dozen Greek airmen are aboard U-S radar planes patrolling the skies over America.
Privately, the Bush administration was expected to press Greece to take tough action against the Revolutionary Organization 17 November in the unsolved murder of British Defense Attache Stephen Saunders in Athens in June 2000, as well as other terrorist attacks.
The U-S State Department, in a report last April, cited the violent far-left group in a number of anti-Western attacks.

Farmers are demanding higher subsidies and settlement of 1-point-3 (b) billion dollars in debts owed to state banks.

"We want satisfactory prices for all our produce. They now have humiliating prices. This is bankruptcy. We want the same financial policy as the farmers in Europe. We want the government to settle the debts of the farmers without interest for ten year"
